The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated shortstop Mookie Betts and have him in the lineup for their series opener against the San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers have struggled for offense over the past several weeks, and will hope Betts can provide a boost to their lineup amid their team-wide slump. LA scored three runs or fewer in each of their three games against the Atlanta Braves in their last series, and only won one of them. Roki Sasaki will take the mound for the Dodgers, and the right-hander is surely ready to go after getting some extra rest. The Dodgers listed Sasaki as their probable pitcher for Saturday’s game, but moved him to a Monday start and gave Blake Snell the start instead after his return from the injured list. The rest will hopefully do Sasaki well, as he has struggled through his first handful of starts in 2026. He has a 5.97 ERA after six appearances, striking out 26 batters in 28.2 innings pitched. He has been strong through the first couple of innings of his starts, but tends to run into trouble during his second time through the order. Only one of his 19 earned runs this season has come in the first two innings of a ballgame. Shohei Ohtani will lead off for the Dodgers as their designated hitter and look to break out of the slump he’s been riding, and Betts will bat second in his return to the lineup. First baseman Freddie Freeman makes room for Betts and moves down to the three hole, while right fielder Kyle Tucker bats in the cleanup spot. Catcher Will Smith drops down the lineup to fifth with Betts back in the lineup, and third baseman Max Muncy will bat sixth. Center fielder Andy Pages bats seventh for the Dodgers, followed by left fielder Teoscar Hernandez and second baseman Hyseong Kim. 1. Shohei Ohtani, DH 2. Mookie Betts, SS 3. Freddie Freeman, 1B 4. Kyle Tucker, RF 5. Will Smith, C 6. Max Muncy, 3B 7. Andy Pages, CF 8. Teoscar Hernandez, LF 9. Hyeseong Kim, 2B P. Roki Sasaki, RHP Right-hander Trevor McDonald will start for the Giants, making his second start of the season for San Francisco. He began the season in the minors for the Giants, but came up May 4 for a start against the San Diego Padres, where he threw seven innings of one-run baseball and allowed just two hits. The 25-year-old ranks as their No. 16 prospect, and will look to further solidify himself in their rotation. The first game of the three-game series begins Monday at 7:10 p.m. PT. After an uneven start to the 2026 season, Andrew Abbott is beginning to look like the pitcher who earned All-Star recognition a year ago. The left-hander continued his resurgence Sunday against the Houston Astros, firing six scoreless innings in the Cincinnati Reds’ 5-0 win at Great American Ball Park. Abbott allowed only three hits, walked one, and struck out five, including multiple punchouts of Yordan Alvarez, while never allowing a Houston runner to reach scoring position. Call (513) 655-3356 or visit qckinetix.com The outing pushed Abbott’s scoreless innings streak to 16.2 innings, a dominant stretch that has completely changed the tone around his season. Just a couple weeks ago, his ERA sat north of five and questions lingered about whether he could rediscover the command and confidence that made him one of Cincinnati’s most dependable starters in 2025. Now, Abbott looks composed again, locating his fastball on the corners and mixing his breaking pitches effectively to keep hitters off balance. What stands out most during this run is efficiency. Abbott needed only 85 pitches to complete six innings against Houston, and he retired nine consecutive batters during one stretch of the game. The Astros, despite featuring dangerous bats like Alvarez and Jose Altuve, never generated sustained pressure. For the Reds, Abbott’s resurgence could not come at a better time. Cincinnati has battled inconsistency early this season, but strong starting pitching remains the club’s clearest path back into the National League Central race. If Abbott continues to resemble the pitcher who broke onto the scene with historic scoreless streaks as a rookie in 2023, the Reds rotation suddenly becomes a major strength again. The San Francisco Giants are in trouble — and the questions are starting to pile up around Buster Posey's front office tenure. In this segment, the guys break down the growing concern around Posey's bold but backfiring moves: the Rafael Devers trade, the Willy Adames signing, the Matt Chapman extension, and now the surprise Patrick Bailey trade to Cleveland. Is this a team that knows what it's doing — or one spinning out of control less than a year into a new regime? Ken Rosenthal called it "subtraction by addition," and it's hard to argue with that right now. The Giants rank among the worst offenses in baseball — fewest home runs, fewest walks, and a historically low walk rate. Devers is finally waking up in May, Willy Adames is creeping back above .200, but the roster construction still doesn't make sense. And then there's Bryce Eldridge — a top prospect called up to the big club and barely getting any at-bats. If you bring him up, you have to play him. The hosts lay it all out — and argue the Giants have two realistic options right now: move Jung Ho Lee back to center and make Casey Schmidt the right fielder, or trade Matt Chapman to clear the logjam. Otherwise, the front office is just spinning its wheels while wasting a prospect's development time. Topics discussed include: Buster Posey's front office moves — bold or reckless? The Devers, Adames, and Chapman contracts — stuck or salvageable? Patrick Bailey traded to Cleveland — what does it mean for Giants catching? Bryce Eldridge called up but barely playing — a development disaster? Sometimes baseball gives a guy one opportunity… and he absolutely runs with it. Ben Royo stepped in because of injury and did more than hold the line — he took over the series. 7 hits in 8 at-bats. 3 home runs. 5 RBIs. In Oxford. Against Ole Miss. That’s not just “a good weekend.” That’s a guy being ready when his number gets called. And that’s what impressed me most watching this series: • The confidence • The quality of the at-bats • The way the moment never sped him up That’s hard to do in this environment. This is exactly what Scott’s Series Standout is about — impact, toughness, and showing up when your team needs you most. Outstanding work by Ben Royo this weekend.
