Bryce Young put the finishing touches on a likely Heisman Trophy campaign to lead the Crimson Tide. He was 26-for-44 passing for 421 yards and 3 touchdowns and added a running TD as the defending national champs defeated the Bulldogs 41-24 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Michigan has ended a 17-year drought without a Big Ten football championship. Now the Wolverines will get a chance to end the conference’s 7-year spell without a national title. The Wolverines routed Iowa 42-3 on Saturday in the B1G Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis behind a stifling defense plus some big plays (and 461 yards) on offense. Michigan, No. 2 in the College Football Playoff rankings coming in, now awaits its Playoff fate. The CFP committee will reveal the 4-team field for the Playoff semifinals and the other New Year’s Day 6 bowls at noon ET Sunday on ESPN. Coach Jim Harbaugh’s UM team, after dominating the Hawkeyes, is a lock to be in either the Cotton Bowl or Orange Bowl, the Playoff semifinals, on Dec. 31. No B1G team has been crowned national champion since Ohio State in 2014, the first year of the CFP system. Sravan Gannavarapu, of FanSided.com, writes: With a trip to Pasadena and a berth in the Rose Bowl on the line, the Utah Utes flexed their muscle and routed the Oregon Ducks, 38-10, just weeks removed from beating them 38-7. Utah is headed west to California to play in one of college football’s most storied venues. Dave Clark, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, writes: Desmond Ridder and Jerome Ford led the Cincinnati Bearcats to a huge 21-point third quarter and 35-20 American Athletic Conference Championship game win against Houston that likely secured a spot in the College Football Playoff semifinals that would be a first ever for a Group of Five team. The Bearcats improved to 13-0 with the victory, and any fear of being jumped by Oklahoma State in the rankings went away with the Cowboys' loss to Baylor in the Big 12 title game.

In pulling off the upset, the Boilermakers defeated an opponent ranked among the top five in the AP Top 25 for the 17th time as an unranked team, the most in FBS history. The Spartans entered at No. 3 in the CFP Rankings and No. 5 in the AP Top 25 thanks to last week's comeback win against Michigan, but a similar closing effort was not in the cards against a Boilermakers program that has built an identity on slaying Goliath. Saturday's victory against Michigan State follows the October upset of then-No. 2 Iowa, which marked the second time Purdue has beaten two top-10 teams in the same season since 1984. The template for the upsets have been the same with Purdue star wide receiver David Bell taking over as the best player on the field. Michigan State's pass defense has not been challenged by a player of Bell's caliber yet this season, and he delivered once again on a big stage with 11 catches for 217 yards and a touchdown against Michigan State. Bell has gone for at least 100 receiving in 15 of his 26 career games with the Boilermakers, and his performance against the Spartans falls in line with his 240-yard showing in the upset of the Hawkeyes earlier this season. Michigan State star running back Kenneth Walker III had a strong performance with 146 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, and the Spartans offense as a whole was able to move the ball against Purdue's defense. It was just unsuccessful in scoring opportunities during key late-game possessions. The issue for Michigan State was the defense, which gave up 536 yards passing to Purdue quarterback Aidan O'Connell, who completed 40 of 54 attempts. The Boilermakers converted on all seven of their red zone opportunities, while one of Michigan State's late-game efforts to cut into the lead resulted in a game-sealing interception.

The stakes are high as well with an inside track to the Big Ten West Division on the line. But expect the Badgers to have their fans jumping around in celebration at the end of this one. Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs Illinois Fighting Illini Predictions: Illinois owns a 5-2 all-time record against Rutgers with three straight wins and clearly enters this matchup with more momentum after last week's upset of Penn State. The Scarlet Knights have played better in head coach Greg Schiano's return but haven't gotten over the hump against Big Ten competition. Minnesota Golden Gophers vs Northwestern Wildcats Predictions: It's tough to go against Minnesota here given how the Gophers have played defensively for much of the season and the emerging young talents in the Gophers' backfield who have stepped up in place of the injured starters. The Wildcats have performed much better this year in the friendly confines of Evanston (3-1), so expect this to be a close matchup, but Minnesota appears to be hitting its stride on both sides of the football at just the right time in the season. Michigan Wolverines vs Michigan State Spartans Predictions: This is probably the lowest over/under in a Top 10 matchup in quite some time and I lowkey love those games. I want to look at Sparty here and give them the edge but I'm just not ready to trust them just yet. Normally, we'd make a Harbaugh joke here but I'm really liking what he's done so far and he deserves credit for that. Same for Mel Tucker and Sparty. Ohio State Buckeyes vs Penn State Nittany Lions Predictions: Sean Clifford was well below 100% during Penn State's loss to Illinois, and if he's not healthy, an already limited offense becomes even more of a liability. Also, losing defensive lineman P.J. Mustipher for the season had a noticeable impact on the Penn State rush defense against Illinois. Now that same unit has to stop running back TreVeyon Henderson while also covering all the weapons Ohio State has in the passing game. I just don't see how Penn State can keep up with this Ohio State team right now.

An embarrassing outcome and a perplexing performance coming out of a bye week dropped the Nittany Lions to 5-2, plummeting 13 spots in an updated AP Top 25 poll. A fresh edition of those rankings were released Sunday afternoon in the aftermath of Week 8 action across college football. Penn State landed at No. 20 after spending the last two weeks ranked seventh. The Penn State Nittany Lions entered this season situated 19th, then peaked at No. 4 following a 5-0 start. Since then, Penn State has imploded offensively, dating back to second-quarter injury suffered by Sean Clifford at Iowa. That afternoon, the Penn State Nittany Lions lost grips on a 17-3 lead en route to a 23-20 loss. Penn State emerged from its bye week with uncertainty surrounding Clifford's health, of which the cause for concern remains undisclosed, but entered a Homecoming matchup versus Illinois favored to win by more than three touchdowns. Penn State established a 10-0 advantage early in the second quarter but didn't muster a single point for the remainder of regulation. Illinois leaned on its rushing attack (350-plus yards compared to 38 passing yards) to control possession and eventually tied up the contest late, setting the stage for a lengthy and strange overtime in which each offense struggled mightily to put the game away. The road won't get any easier for Penn State, as a visit to No. 5 Ohio State awaits next Saturday. The Ohio State Buckeyes own a four-game win streak over the Penn State Nittany Lions, and would likely knock PSU out of the AP Top 25 poll with a fifth straight series victory. Ahead of the Ohio State Buckeyes, the top of these rankings are led, in order, by Georgia (unanimous No. 1), Cincinnati, Alabama, and Oklahoma. Other Big Ten football representatives in the Top 25 include Michigan (No. 6), Michigan State (No. 8), and Iowa (No. 9). Penn State will play the Spartans and Wolverines next month.

The Hawkeyes had raced out to a 6-0 start on the season and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the country coming into Saturday’s clash at home with Purdue. Fresh off of an upset of No. 4 Penn State, it looked like the Hawkeyes were for real. But that did not last for long. Iowa fell to Purdue on Saturday, 24-7, suffering its first loss of the season. What looked like a season with so much promise and excitement quickly lost all that energy, as quarterback Spencer Petras threw four interceptions on the day and running back Tyler Goodson was limited to just 68 yards on 12 carries. Iowa still can make it to the Big Ten Championship and still have a special season if it recovers in a big way, but the margin for error has now shrunk. And the Hawkeyes know that they let a huge opportunity slip away. After the game, Ferentz was asked about a variety of topics in the game, ranging from the play of Petras and what he tells his quarterback moving forward, to how he uses this game as motivation for his team. Here is everything that Ferentz said in his postgame press conference after his team’s first loss of 2021: “Just a really disappointing and difficult day for our football team. Certainly, our fans too. They were great, appreciate them being there, you know, every week. Basically, just program-wise, our goal is to try to improve and come out victorious in the football game. So, you know, certainly didn't do that. And, you know, we’ve got a week here to figure out some answers and see what we can do to improve. That’s what the next couple of weeks will be for. Purdue played a great football game, credit to them. They outdid us in every category. And certainly, you know, David Bell’s outstanding. We knew that coming in. He’s a tremendous football player; a lot of respect for him. He and number five both played really — think impacted the game an awful lot. And, you know, we knew it was gonna be a tough contest. “Bottom line is we didn’t get it done. You know, they move the ball well. The last time out against Minnesota looked very similar to that. We had a hard time getting off the field and then we couldn’t keep pace offensively either. So, our credit to our opponents. They did a great job. And, you know, for our football team, it’s first time we’ve had to deal with a loss in a while. So, we’ll get a lesson in that. The biggest thing is right now which is to move forward. That’s what I shared with the team a few minutes ago. We got some time to stew on it and sit on it. There's nothing you can do about that. We got to move on and see we can do about moving forward and taking on the second half of this schedule, five-game schedule.”
