Thomas Bryant is the latest Laker signing. A center that can space the floor and protect the rim. Perfect to play alongside AD. They also signed Damian Jones, an athletic big man who can play a role similar to that of Dwight Howard and Javale McGee on the Lakers championship roster. It looks like the Lakers are trying to go back to a playing style similar to that 2020 team. One with more size and athleticism. All these things tell me that AD will likely be playing more power forward this season. The Lakers were one of the worst defenses last season, mainly because they didnāt have any good defenders. But a lot of that was due to them being too small. They had too many guards, and a lot of those guards were forced to defend bigger wings. But this season, the Lakers made an effort to get bigger and more athletic on the wing. But they also bulked up their front line. Now their bigs include AD, Damian Jones, Thomas Bryant, and Wenyen Gabriel. A big part of that championship defense was having that big and athletic front line. And of course having AD being that swiss army knife on the defensive end. Anthony Davis has made it clear that he doesnāt like playing center, and prefers to play the 4. Now most people believe that Anthony Davis is best when heās playing center. And the Lakers best lineups are ones where Anthony Davis is at center. The numbers are there to back it up. But just because that is their best lineup, that doesnāt mean thatās the lineup they have to go with every night, or even most nights. We have to consider the costs along with the benefits. AD played a lot at center last season to accommodate Russell Westbrook being on the team. And then he got injured and missed a good portion of the season. Now there might not be a direct cause and effect, but there is something to be said about him not being comfortable in his position. Heās being put in spots that heās not as familiar with, making rotations heās not used to, guarding guys heās not accustomed to for a larger portion of the game. This could increase the likelihood of him getting hurt. AD already has a reputation of being injury-prone and not being available enough for his team. Do we really want to put that guy in a position that heās not very comfortable playing? Now when itās the playoffs, and itās really winning time, then you can unleash your best lineup. Put AD at the center. But not for a random Tuesday night during the regular season. Itās like a nuclear bomb. It might be your most destructive weapon, but you should only use it when absolutely necessary, otherwise the consequences will be dire. And thatās actually the formula they used to win a championship. Have AD play power forward a majority of the time, keep him comfortable, keep him happy, donāt put too much wear and tear on him throughout the season. And then when you are in a desperate situation, and absolutely need to, like game 6 of the NBA finals, then you can play him at center. Sure youād like to be able to play your best lineup all the time, but thatās not how it works. Thatās why you donāt play your starting 5 the entire 48 minutes. There has to be a balance. Itās much more important that we have a healthy AD for when it actually matters in the playoffs. So now it looks like the Lakers have the personnel to do just that. Likely theyāll have Thomas Bryant be the starting center alongside AD. Especially since Darvin Ham wants to implement a 4 out 1 in offense. If Westbrook is still on the team, hopefully not, but if he still is, then it probably wonāt work as well. There might even be cases where Westbrook will have to be the 1 in. But having a stretch 5 will help alleviate Westbrookās bad shooting. But ideally your point guard would be a threat from three and Anthony Davis would be the 1 in. We have seen him be a good shooter, especially in that bubble run. But in recent seasons, and especially last season, his shooting was atrocious. So he should be the 1 inside surrounded by shooters, and every 3 pointer he makes would just be a bonus. Damian Jones could start if youāre looking for more defense and athleticism around the rim. He also shot the 3 a bit last season at a decent percentage at 35%. But it wasnāt at a high enough volume for him to be a true stretch 5. He did say that he's comfortable shooting the 3. But catching lobs, rebounding, blocking shots, and just being a big athlete will be his bread and butter. I do think that Thomas Bryant is the better overall player and better fit for Darvin Hamās system and will ultimately be the starting center. But Damian Jones will be very useful against certain matchups and will definitely play a good amount of minutes.
#Lakers Beat #Thunder 120-101, #StanleyJohnson 21 Pts, Wenyen Gabriel 16 Pts Off The Bench Still without their stars, the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in their final home game on Friday night, 120-101. Dwight Howard muscled his way to a pair of dunks to begin the contest, though the Lakers found themselves tied 7-7 with the Thunder. Malik Monk got involved offensively with a drive to the rim for an and-one and a lob, but a turnover allowed Oklahoma City to go up 14-12. Monk was able to find Austin Reaves in the corner for a three, but Laker turnovers turned into easy points for the Thunder, who extended their lead to six. Wenyen Gabriel and Wayne Ellington hit back-to-back threes, but Los Angeles found themselves trailing 28-27 after one. Mason Jones finally got on the scoreboard early in the second after being called up from the G League, powering through a defender for an and-one to put the Lakers ahead 38-32. Defensively, L.A. did a better job of forcing Oklahoma City into tougher shots, and a couple of Monk layups kept them up midway through the quarter. Stanley Johnson got aggressive on the offensive, barreling to the rim on a few occasions and hitting a midrange jumper to maintain the Lakersā steady lead. However, Jaylen Hoard was able to fight for a few baskets at the end of the half, leaving L.A. only up 56-52 at halftime. It was a poor defensive start to the third for the Lakers who allowed open shots to the Thunder, prompting a timeout from head coach Frank Vogel. Howard was able to take advantage of Isaiah Robyās foul trouble by getting deep post position and scoring but the team found themselves tied 69-69 regardless. Gabriel subbed in and immediately provided a jolt of energy, eventually getting a rise out of the crowd for a putback dunk. The Laker bench was able to create some separation when they hit several difficult shots and they went into the fourth up 90-82. Jones showed off his ability to finish through contact again with a tough drive that resulted in a three-point play. L.A. really began to pull away as they scored nearly every time down the floor, ballooning their lead to 15. The Lakers continued to pound away the tired Thunder defense, with Johnson in particular using his physicality to get all the to the basket on several occasions. With a large lead, the Purple and Gold were able to cruise to a victory and snap their eight-game losing streak. So Z Nation, what did you think about the Lakers win against the OKC Thunder??? Los Angeles Lakers expert and youth coach Raj breaks down Lakers film on their win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on 3.21.22, specifically the lineup they used to close the game, why it was so effective, and how the potential return of Anthony Davis would hyper charge it even further |NBA Film Study: Did The Lakers Find Their āDeath Lineupā Vs Cleveland!? | Los Angeles Lakers Film Study For reference, Iām a youth basketball coach, movement and mechanics coach, sports scientist, DPT (doctor of physio), strength and conditioning coach, researcher, mindfulness clinician and owner of 3CB Performanceāāproviding sports medicine, performance, and mindfulness services online and in-person at clinics in West LA and Valencia, CA. The Los Angeles Lakers surged past the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night in Cleveland for arguably their most impressive W of the season. In the closing 5 minutes, the team used a lineup of Russell Westbrook - Austin Reaves - LeBron James - Wenyen Gabriel - Stanley Johnson that was a +85.7 net rating to blow the game out. Lets go through the film to determine what made this lineup so effective. Firstly, the lineup puts additional defensive playmakers on the floor. Watch here how Stanley reads in the inbounds and knifes in for this steal and bucket - and this is coming out of a Cavs timeout so he blows up their entire ATO. Here Wenye n Gabriel completely negates Evan Mobley in a 1v1 and forces the turnover. Both players raise the defensive floor for the team, something the Lakers have badly needed this season. The Lakersā team D has been filled with blown assignments and players on different pages. This lineup was the antithesis of that. Here the team blitzes Darius Garland with Russell Westbrook - who points out the rotation to LeBron on the backside, Austin tags and recovers while Bron plays free safety in a 1v2 position reading Garlandās pass, Gabriel backs off and then the back 3 all communicate to coordinate their rotation resulting in a contested 3 for a 25% shooter in Christian Okoro (he makes it but you live with that shot). Hereās another example, again on a blitz of Garland. Take note of the anticipation, recovery, and coordinated rotations with multiple efforts here - resulting in a turnover into a fast break and what shouldāve been an and-1 dunk for Lebron. Offensively thereās an added layer of rim pressure with the athleticism and length of Johnson and Gabriel who can capitalize on LeBron and Russ attacking and kicking. Thereās also 2ndary decision-makers on the floor in Reaves & Johnson who can create plays. Here Reaves attacks after Westbrook collapses the D and reads the rotation astutely to find a wide open Stanley Johnson who cans the 3. Last but not least, this lineup simply has multiple guys who wonāt get punked - they play with effort and increase the margins. This sequence is case in point as after a LeBron miss, Gabriel uses his height & strength advantage to gain the extra possession. On the ensuing possession, LeBronās unable to convert twice (fouled on the first shot) but Stanley knifes in for the rebound to gain a 4th possession for the team. These are winning plays that add up over the course of a game. Of course this lineup wonāt maintain the massive net rating but it highlights key attributes and complementary profiles that can maximize this current Lakers roster. The potential addition of Anthony Davis and his more than stellar fit into this style of lineup may be the Lakersā chance to salvage this season and make any sort of noise in the post-season (provided they make it).
