D'angelo Russell has been solid this postseason. He's had some bad games, but he's also played a major role in these wins.

THESE Lakers Free Agent Signings Will MAXIMIZE Anthony Davis
THESE Lakers Free Agent Signings Will MAXIMIZE Anthony Davis

Thomas Bryant is the latest Laker signing. A center that can space the floor and protect the rim. Perfect to play alongside AD. They also signed Damian Jones, an athletic big man who can play a role similar to that of Dwight Howard and Javale McGee on the Lakers championship roster. It looks like the Lakers are trying to go back to a playing style similar to that 2020 team. One with more size and athleticism. All these things tell me that AD will likely be playing more power forward this season. The Lakers were one of the worst defenses last season, mainly because they didn’t have any good defenders. But a lot of that was due to them being too small. They had too many guards, and a lot of those guards were forced to defend bigger wings. But this season, the Lakers made an effort to get bigger and more athletic on the wing. But they also bulked up their front line. Now their bigs include AD, Damian Jones, Thomas Bryant, and Wenyen Gabriel. A big part of that championship defense was having that big and athletic front line. And of course having AD being that swiss army knife on the defensive end. Anthony Davis has made it clear that he doesn’t like playing center, and prefers to play the 4. Now most people believe that Anthony Davis is best when he’s playing center. And the Lakers best lineups are ones where Anthony Davis is at center. The numbers are there to back it up. But just because that is their best lineup, that doesn’t mean that’s the lineup they have to go with every night, or even most nights. We have to consider the costs along with the benefits. AD played a lot at center last season to accommodate Russell Westbrook being on the team. And then he got injured and missed a good portion of the season. Now there might not be a direct cause and effect, but there is something to be said about him not being comfortable in his position. He’s being put in spots that he’s not as familiar with, making rotations he’s not used to, guarding guys he’s not accustomed to for a larger portion of the game. This could increase the likelihood of him getting hurt. AD already has a reputation of being injury-prone and not being available enough for his team. Do we really want to put that guy in a position that he’s not very comfortable playing? Now when it’s the playoffs, and it’s really winning time, then you can unleash your best lineup. Put AD at the center. But not for a random Tuesday night during the regular season. It’s like a nuclear bomb. It might be your most destructive weapon, but you should only use it when absolutely necessary, otherwise the consequences will be dire. And that’s actually the formula they used to win a championship. Have AD play power forward a majority of the time, keep him comfortable, keep him happy, don’t put too much wear and tear on him throughout the season. And then when you are in a desperate situation, and absolutely need to, like game 6 of the NBA finals, then you can play him at center. Sure you’d like to be able to play your best lineup all the time, but that’s not how it works. That’s why you don’t play your starting 5 the entire 48 minutes. There has to be a balance. It’s much more important that we have a healthy AD for when it actually matters in the playoffs. So now it looks like the Lakers have the personnel to do just that. Likely they’ll have Thomas Bryant be the starting center alongside AD. Especially since Darvin Ham wants to implement a 4 out 1 in offense. If Westbrook is still on the team, hopefully not, but if he still is, then it probably won’t work as well. There might even be cases where Westbrook will have to be the 1 in. But having a stretch 5 will help alleviate Westbrook’s bad shooting. But ideally your point guard would be a threat from three and Anthony Davis would be the 1 in. We have seen him be a good shooter, especially in that bubble run. But in recent seasons, and especially last season, his shooting was atrocious. So he should be the 1 inside surrounded by shooters, and every 3 pointer he makes would just be a bonus. Damian Jones could start if you’re looking for more defense and athleticism around the rim. He also shot the 3 a bit last season at a decent percentage at 35%. But it wasn’t at a high enough volume for him to be a true stretch 5. He did say that he's comfortable shooting the 3. But catching lobs, rebounding, blocking shots, and just being a big athlete will be his bread and butter. I do think that Thomas Bryant is the better overall player and better fit for Darvin Ham’s system and will ultimately be the starting center. But Damian Jones will be very useful against certain matchups and will definitely play a good amount of minutes.
