The confirmation comes two days after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gave the final go-ahead to the CVC Capitals-owned Ahmedabad franchise, as they issued the Letter of Intent, which was delayed following the emergence of the company’s linkages with companies outside India that had given birth to a controversy. The new franchises were originally supposed to be given a two-week window for picking the players, although it is understood that the board and respective team managements have agreed that 10 days will be sufficient for it. As it stands, the new franchises have time till 5 pm on January 22 to conclude the process. The mega auction, the organising of which was under doubt owing to the significant upsurge of Covid-19 cases in India, is understood to go underway as per plans on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. While various reports suggesting the likelihood of it going outside India, IPL chairman Brijesh Patel silenced the claims on January 11, the same day when IPL also found a new sponsor in Tata Group, the Indian business conglomerate, after the pull-out of Vivo. During the team auction, CVC Capital, an American company, pipped the Adani Group to purchase the Ahmedabad franchise by paying INR 5,625 crores. However, it was later reported that the company has made investments in two betting companies, and it created a massive controversy. The BCCI announced the appointment of a neutral panel consisting of Supreme Court and High Court judges to look into this issue. Later, it was reported that the panel has given a clean chit to CVC and the ball is now in BCCI’s court. The board is yet to decide the future of the franchise and thus, the future of the 15th season of the Indian Premier League. According to a report published by Cricbuzz, the attorneys for the Ahmedabad team and the board are working together to find a suitable and lawful wording for an agreement to be signed by both parties. The board has made its mind, and CVC is going to be the owners of the Ahmedabad team, but the delay is only due to the legal experts trying to find the right words for the agreement. The effect of this delay is likely to be on the mega auction, which has already been pushed to February. The board is likely to give at least 15 days to both the franchise owners to sign players. Hence, the auction date might be further postponed to a new date, and the BCCI might announce the final date once the CVC issue resolves. BCCI is preparing to host the biggest auction of IPL’s history The eight teams have already released the name of players they are going to retain for the upcoming season of the IPL. The two new teams have the option to retain three players before moving towards the mega auction. It will be held on February 12 and 13 in Bangalore. Official communication from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is awaited, but Cricbuzz can confirm that the IPL officials have called each franchise on Thursday (December 23) to inform them of the dates. During their calls on Thursday morning, the BCCI officials also insisted that the schedule is final despite a clash with an international game - an ODI between India and West Indies. The board assured the franchise that the match will have no bearing on the auction proceedings and both will go ahead as planned. The second One-Day International between India and West Indies is scheduled for February 12 in Kolkata. "It has been clarified to us that the match and auction are two different things and both will go ahead," a franchise official told Cricbuzz after obtaining clarification from the BCCI. If anyone, Star Sports should have a say on this as they are the broadcast rights holders of both the events. It is learnt that Star officials have also been informed about it. A reply from Star is awaited. The BCCI has written to International boards and state associations recently to send in the names of the players to be enrolled for the auction by January 17. The mega event, being held for 10 teams this year, will have more than 1000 players with as many as between 200 to 250 expected to go under the hammer. The IPL officials have further informed the franchises that the formal pre-auction briefing, a normal feature of every auction, will be held on February 11 and has asked them to be in Bangalore by evening that day.
