As they head into Day 3 India holds a commanding lead of 171 runs putting the pressure squarely on England's shoulders. England will need to strike early and consistently if they harbour hopes of clawing their way back into contention. At the close of Day 2 it's advantage India as they continue to assert their authority in this enthralling Test encounter. India's star with the ball Bumrah is in for a chat. He says he enjoyed his spell and he is very happy to get the reward. mentions that reverse swing plays an important role in India and it is important to learn how to use it. Adds that he has grown up watching reverse swing setups and he is very happy that he was able to execute them. Feels that it is important to be patient and set the batter up with good deliveries. Ends by saying that he avoids looking at numbers because it adds pressure. The day began with India resuming their innings with just 4 wickets in hand with Jaiswal and Ashwin at the crease. However England claimed the early advantage in the first session swiftly wrapping up the Indian tail and restricting them to a manageable total. Yet again it was the lethal duo of Crawley and Duckett from the English side who provided a solid start to their team's innings with Crawley particularly shining with a brilliant knock of 76 runs off just 78 balls. While a few English batters managed to get starts they were unable to capitalize falling victim to some unplayable deliveries from the relentless Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah's fiery spell saw him scalp six crucial wickets bringing up his 150th Test wicket for India and dismantling the heart of England's middle order. Adding to the bowling prowess Kuldeep also made significant contributions claiming three vital wickets and forming a potent partnership with Bumrah to trouble the English batters who were bowled out by India inside of two sessions. As the sun sets on Day 2 of the Second Test between India and England it's India who once again finds themselves in a commanding position in this series. With their second innings underway India stands at 28/0 after 5 overs holding a substantial first-innings lead of 171 runs. It has been a day dominated by the brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah and the Indian team as they stamped their authority on proceedings. The square leg umpire Chris Gaffaney was standing pretty deep and by the time he could walk to the bowler's end the clock spilled over. India's day!! Jaiswal continued from where he left off today morning scoring his maiden double hundred. However England were disciplined with their bowling and a combination of Anderson Bashir and Rehan Ahmed closed out the Indian innings at 396. That looked like a just about par score on this deck and England made a good start to their innings. 59 runs added for the first wicket before Duckett was puzzled by some extra bounce. Crawley continued to score a brisk fifty but fell to a superb Shreyas Iyer catch. Then Jasprit Bumrah cut through the middle order like a knife through butter. He made the most of reverse swing dismissing Root with an outswinger Pope with an inswinger and then Stokes with a cutter. The Indian vice-captain ended with 6/45 as the English middle-order offered little resistance. It is advantage for the hosts but they found themselves in a similar situation after Day 2 in Hyderabad and nobody needs reminding how that one ended. Five times in fact since 2000. But only the great Australian team of 2004 had the legs to see an early lead to a series win. That's how hard it is to keep throwing punches in these conditions without copping them back with interest. Even in this decade of impregnability India have found ways to overturn early deficits. In Bengaluru they produced a clinic in attractional bowling. Four years later in Chennai they went the other way and raged on a raging turner. And so on to Vizag 2024 where the hosts will be out to convince the rest of the world that their facade is not in fact fraying and that they simply don't lose consecutive home Tests well not since 2012 anyway. But time is what it is and Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid now have to protect a proud record with a squad that has fewer Test runs. Joe Root and where Ravichandran Ashwin is both the highest wicket-taker and second-highest run and century maker. The captain-coach pair seek quick solutions while colliding head-on with a team that has spent the last 18 months running on an irresistible quantum of jeopardy and the last few weeks. Sweeping any rotating red spherical object out of sight. Lest it is lost in the afterglow it is worth remembering that India were still India in Hyderabad just a little less super-sharp. They led by 190 and had chances that they didn't take. In the end they were done for by what was in many ways a knock for the ages. It'll be interesting to see how they play in the follow up. Imitation however subtle will both be a hat-tip and an acknowledgement of shedding inhibitions. However should they lose the toss again and find the pitch to be similar India will ask for better control from their bowlers and more enterprise from their batters as well as the captain. For the second time in two years Rohit has been properly challenged at home with the marker for the series this time laid down very early. What happens next is a tantalising prospect. Both players are good against spin but Patidar might seem to be ahead in the pecking order by virtue of being called up to the squad earlier to replace Virat Kohli. India The hosts have several ways to go about making up for the double blow of losing KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja. It is certain that at least one of Rajat Patidar or Sarfaraz Khan will debut in the middle-order. The team management did their best to keep the identity and the number of debutants under wraps with both contenders batting even in the optional net session the day before the game. England Jack Leach will miss the Test with a knee injury and tall off-spinner Shoaib Bashir the visa issues behind him will replace him in the XI. James Anderson was at his menacing best in the nets two days out from the game and has been picked as the sole seamer in the XI in place of Mark Wood. What to expect: Spin but not of the extreme kind. Last time when India went down to England in Chennai they produced rank turners. But the absence of four all-time greats from the team might call for a more measured approach. This one is a black soil wicket with a smattering of dried grass to bind it. The two Tests played at this venue have been characterised by the slightly old-school subcontinental slow burn progression before culminating in fifth-day jeopardy which is how this one could also go unless the warmer temperatures aid faster disintegration. With the series levelled at one-all the decider promises to be a nail-biter. After securing a five-wicket victory in the first ODI in Mumbai India suffered a crushing ten-wicket defeat in Visakhapatnam. Although the outcomes of both matches were exactly the opposite the Indian team had a common and familiar nemesis a top-order collapse. And guess who the wrecker-in-chief for Australia was? It was none other than Mitchell Starc who ripped the hosts apart through his incredible skills with the new ball. Also the Indian bowlers were no match to their counterparts in the second game as the Australian openers took only eleven overs to chase the meagre target of 118 runs. Mitchell Marsh took on the hosts' bowling unit once again slamming his second consecutive fifty of the series. So moving on to this game India must find solutions to their problems with special emphasis on countering Starc and Marsh. Despite being drubbed in Mumbai Australia bounced back in style decimating the hosts by ten wickets to stay alive in the series. While Mitchell Starc has breathed fire to torment the Indian top order Mitchell Marsh has come out with all guns blazing with the bat to keep the Indians at bay. Furthermore Sean Abbott and Nathan Ellis also had a terrific time with the ball and would like to sustain their prolific run in the series. However the focus will be on Steve Smith Glenn Maxwell and Marnus Labuschagne who recorded failures in Mumbai and will therefore look to conclude the tour on a high note. Stats: - Steve Smith is 51 runs away from 5000 ODI runs. He is also one century short of equalling Ricky Ponting for most ODI 100s against India for Australia. - Virat Kohli has had extreme fortune at Chepauk. In seven ODI innings there he has two fifties one hundred and four single-digit scores. Team news India: If the team management have workload concerns with a WTC final coming up Umran Malik could be in for Mohammed Shami. Malik spent a considerable amount of time bowling on Tuesday. Washington Sundar offers variety in finger spin and is a local but the decision to bring him in for another finger spinner will not be straightforward. Team news Australia: Nathan Ellis did not have a clue on Warner's fitness update at the pre-match press conference but the opening batter spent around half an hour taking throwdowns from the support staff in scorching heat. He didn't look in too much discomfort and even practiced running between the wickets. To accommodate him though Australia will have to put one of their all-rounders on the bench. What to expect: Rahul Dravid called the wheat brown strip in Chennai a 'good wicket' on the eve of the game which can be code for a batting belter. After a tough Mumbai surface and a poor batting performance in Vizag the series is perhaps due a big-scoring finale. A hot sweltering day is in the offing with a slight chance of rain but nothing heavy enough to disrupt the game. Pitch Report: When the pitches were uncovered and unattended to it used to help the fast bowlers. However since India started playing the spin quartet of Bishan Singh Bedi BS Chandrasekar S Venkatraghavan and EAS Prasanna the wickets were made spin-friendly. Among the top 10 wicket-takers at the ground nine of them are spinners and the only fast bowler on the list is Kapil Dev. Anil Kumble sits on top of the list with 48 wickets followed closely by Harbhajan Singh - 42 wickets. Audio Content Disclaimer For This Content This is self-created content and not copied content. It's a must-win game for Australia as a loss here will lead them to a series defeat. Meanwhile India will aim at securing another win and claiming the series. India had a clinical outing in the first ODI in Mumbai crushing the visitors by five wickets. Riding on a sensational bowling performance especially from Mohammed Shami the hosts restricted their counterparts to a paltry 188 and later chased the total courtesy of a match-winning 108-run stand between KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja. But the struggle of their top-order against the moving ball was evident as Shubman Gill Ishan Kishan Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav departed for low scores. However the Men in Blue will back themselves to turn things around in the second game as their batting lineup will get a massive boost with regular skipper Rohit Sharma rejoining the squad. On the contrary Australia had a forgettable game in Mumbai and will be desperate to restore parity by winning this match. Although most of their batters got out cheaply Mitchell Marsh passed the Indian challenge with flying colours amassing an aggressive 65-ball 81 including ten fours and five humongous sixes. So moving on to this fixture the Australian think tank would like better returns from their key batters- Travis Head Steve Smith Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis. Meanwhile their bowling unit led by Mitchell Starc received accolades as they made a match out of such a sub-par total. However despite reducing India to 39 for four the visitors allowed Rahul and Jadeja to consolidate something they should rectify in this do-or-die game. So can Australia stay alive in the series? Team news India: With only a day between the games India had no scheduled practice session on the eve of the game. Rohit Sharma is expected to lead the side after missing the first ODI due to personal commitments. India could rest Mohammed Shami who had a long bowl in the fourth Test and bowled full tilt in the first ODI. Team news Australia: Alex Carey missed the first ODI due to illness but is expected to be back for this one. David Warner who was sidelined with concussion and hairline fracture of the elbow is also likely to return and which middle order batter he could squeeze out is anybody's guess. There's certainly pressure on Marnus Lanuschagne to deliver; the batter has averaged a shade over 33 in his 21 innings at No.4 a batting position Australia are keen to get right. What to expect: Scattered thunderstorms are forecast in the afternoon so a rain-curtailed game cannot be ruled out. The pitches here have tended to be very good for shot making and India amassed 387/5 against the West Indies here in 2019. Five out the eight men's ODIs here have ended in favour of the chasing side with one match tied. Pitch Conditions: Historically it is known for producing belters where batsmen can play through the line on even-paced wickets. However in recent times spinners have made their mark. It can be exemplified by some low-scoring games in the 2013-14 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Audio Content Disclaimer For This Content This is self-created content and not copied content.
