The Red Devils were helped by the fact that Southampton ended the game with nine men and utterly collapsed from the moment the first of those was sent off in the second minute, but Man United still had to hold up their end of the bargain and showed absolutely no mercy in doing so. Solskjaer will also be pleased with the fact that the goals were spread around the team too; Man United became only the second team to have seven different scorers in a Premier League match, with Anthony Martial the only one to register more than once. The victory means that United are now the leading scorers in the league this season, but more importantly it keeps them in touch with table-toppers Manchester City, who face a trip to champions Liverpool this weekend. It was also a swift return to winning ways at Old Trafford following their shock 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United in their previous home game, meaning that the Red Devils have now won five of their last seven top-flight outings on their own turf, having gone six without victory before that. A surprise home defeat to Newcastle United is the only blot on Everton's copybook over the past month or so, and they quickly bounced back from that disappointment to beat Leeds on Wednesday night. The victory at Elland Road was their fourth in a row on the road - their best run for more than 35 years - and should they continue that run on Saturday then they would make it five top-flight away wins on the bounce for the first time since April 1970. Indeed, Man United themselves are one of only two teams to have won more away games than Everton this season, with the Toffees' tally of seven already their most in a single campaign since 2013-14. All of that leaves Everton sixth in the Premier League table, just four points adrift of champions Liverpool and crucially with two games in hand over their Merseyside rivals in fourth. Champions League qualification is still effectively in their own hands, then, and victory at Old Trafford would be another firm statement of their credentials. Shaw's withdrawal was more precautionary than Cavani's, with the Uruguayan striker suffering a knock to his ankle which will be monitored ahead of this match. Cavani is expected to be available if needed, but Martial's brace off the bench - coupled with a good record against Everton which has seen him directly involved in nine goals from 11 meetings - could be enough for him to earn his 250th Man United appearance from the start anyway. Phil Jones is United's only confirmed absentee, so Solskjaer must decide whether to stick with a similar starting XI to the one which beat Southampton so convincingly, or offer recalls to the likes of Paul Pogba. Ancelotti is hopeful that Jordan Pickford will have recovered from the rib injury which kept him out of the Leeds game in time for this match. The trip to Old Trafford is expected to come just too soon for Allan, though, while Jean-Philippe Gbamin is a long-term absentee. James Rodriguez was an unused sub against Leeds and so should come back into the starting XI for this match, but former Man United forward Joshua King, who was also heavily linked with a return to Old Trafford last summer, will likely have to wait for his full Everton debut. Welcome back guys! After Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani inspired Man Utd to a comeback vs. Southampton with an assist & two goals. We could see him start regularly in Solskjaer’s side. So let’s take a look at why Cavani is the perfect number nine to lead Man United’s attacking line this season. First let’s take a look at how Edinson Cavani offers something different. Cavani offers a unique option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer through the middle. Manchester United’s forward options are all slight, pacey forwards who prefer to move away from the ball and attack the space in behind and whilst Martial does drop off and link the play, he can be dominated physically. Meanwhile, Edinson Cavani is a proper number nine with over a decade of experience playing up against some of the best defenders in the world. His physical frame and experience make him an ideal back to goal striker as he understands how and when to make himself available as a target to play up to. Edinson Cavani’s mixture of world class hold up play & off the ball movement has been evident in Man Utd’s last two games. Against Istanbul Bashiksheer when United’s deepest players were pressed high, he would often drop off into number 10 as an option to play to. Sometimes he’d play to the midfielders but often he’d play back to a defender, safety first. But regardless of the target, Cavani would play accurate, one touch passes. He completed 23 out of his 24 passes against Istanbul Bashiksheer with a completion rate of 96%. Tidy play but he was still instrumental in United’s attacking play. Cavani’s second half performance in the 3-2 turnaround at Southampton showed he’s still got razor sharp instincts and the will to win matches. Take his assist for Bruno. Ward-Prowse with the ball. He plays to Adams who gets dispossessed by Fred. Wan-Bissaka plays to Cavani who drops it back to Fred. The Brazillian does well to escape pressure and goes back to Wan-Bissaka who plays wide to Cavani. The Uruguayan then picks out Bruno Fernandes with a pinpoint pass who gives United a lifeline. As much as this was good play, several players in the United squad could have taken Cavani’s place in this goal. What only Cavani can do is score his goals. His instincts as a goalscorer are phenomenal and he’s excellent in the air.
