Lebron James to Kaepernick: Donald Trump America and the Raceless Black Athlete - NBA NFL
Lebron James to Kaepernick: Donald Trump America and the Raceless Black Athlete - NBA NFL

Attorney Antonio Moore evaluates Lebron James and Colin Kaepernick in context of racial tensions in America. Moore delves into the Lebron James I Promise School, Kaepernick taking a knee, and several other racial issues surrounding sports in America. Moore looks at whether sports professional can fight racial injustice, and be global ambassadors for sports that so often represent themselves as post-racial. Excerpt: In America today so much of sport is more about the bread and circus than the art of competition. The ringleader of the circus can’t stand up to the crowd and scream there is no bread, and once he does the circus can no longer have him lead the show. Whether they say it or not, this is where the NFL stands with Kaepernick. From sponsorships to community activities, the overarching theme of modern sports is to portray the best vision of America, not the truth of its urban ghettos. As I have stated before, sports today plays the role of a decadent veil, particularly in relation to covering the economic problems of the black community. A community in dire need of social equity has been sold on hooking its dreams on hoops and gridiron, leaving little room for anything else. Football’s war on the minds of black men is real, and Kaepernick’s protest and the league’s reaction points it out in a real way. It becomes increasingly obvious when, in a quarterback-hungry league, owners begin to look for any way out, including pointing to a vegan diet as a way to slip by the ire of its most conscious fans. So when Kaepernick knelt during an NFL game, I knew his days were numbered. How can a league built on feel-good stories of overcoming the odds have a franchise quarterback pointing out the reality that hardly anyone overcomes the odds? When Kaepernick stated, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color… To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder." He also was standing up to a system built on ignoring the reality of race in our great nation. A system built on chokeholds of the Eric Garners of the world, rough rides in the paddy wagon experienced by all the Freddie Grays, and the untold stories of the Walter Scotts shot in the back while only trying not to go back to prison. Kap, when you stand up for these issues little white kids in suburban America can no longer hang your jersey next to their copy of the shield carried by Cap from the Avengers. You lose your status as a superhero when you become vocal, and you instead make yourself into a real problem for the money making engine called the NFL. So #Istandwithkap, the issue is you can’t be Kap on one knee and play football. Gone are the days of sport that made Muhammad Ali — these are the days of propaganda and a push to tell tales of diversity of opportunity for all. If he ever plays again he’ll never be the same Kap that leads a franchise, for that I tip my cap to him and say #blacklivesmatter as well.

James Harden All 265 Three-Pointers Full Highlights (2017-18 Season Three-ilation Part I)
James Harden All 265 Three-Pointers Full Highlights (2017-18 Season Three-ilation Part I)

James Harden awoke to unfamiliar sounds outside his bedroom. For some reason, he could hear car horns blaring, engines running, the normal background noise of urban life…but he didn't live an urban life. His home in Houston was tucked far back into an exclusive suburban community where the slightest hint of loudness would attract a dozen noise complaints filed with the local police. When he opened his eyes, he found he had a bigger problem than just the unexpected sounds; his richly-furnished bedroom had been replaced with a concrete-walled, uncarpeted, undecorated hovel. His bed, normally appointed with a multitude of pillows and many layers of blankets, now had one simple white sheet atop a lumpy mattress. Just as he was beginning to try to make sense of this situation, he noticed something even more alarming: His beard was missing. The mass of hair that tickled his chin and constantly appeared in the periphery of his vision, conspicuously absent. Now starting to become anxious that he had been kidnapped and forcibly shaved by a terrorist organization of some kind, he went to check for his phone in case it had somehow been left with him. However, when he glimpsed his arm, he let out a gasp of surprise; it was no longer black, but a light brown color. Throwing off the sheets, he saw that the skin color of his arm was not an anomaly, for his entire body was the same shade. "Vikal, come get your breakfast!" yelled a female voice from another room. When James didn't immediately respond to the call, still being extremely confused about the present goings-on, the face of a woman appeared in the doorway. "Stop being lazy and get out of bed! And put on a shirt before coming to the table!" James was aware of a strange dichotomy; the words coming from the woman's mouth were clearly in a different language, but he had no problem understanding them. A hypothesis had formed in his mind, although it didn't offer a satisfactory explanation for his predicament: somehow, his consciousness had been transferred to the body of a young boy somewhere in southeast asia. He wasn't sure if he would be able to speak the language as seamlessly as he could understand it, however, so he obeyed the woman's (his mother's?) command silently, pulling on a loose pair of pants that was on the floor and opening a drawer (the one piece of furniture aside from the bed) to find a small selection of shirts from which to choose. Apparently Vikal had a bad habit of walking around the house only partially-clothed, so James pulled one on and followed the smell of food into the kitchen. The scolding did not stop when James sat down at the table. "Don't you remember how mad the manager was last time you were late? Do I need to remind you that we need that income to buy diapers for your sister?" This statement pierced through James' thoughts, which were all focused on what he might have done to cause this swapping of awarenesses and how he could reverse it. He nodded blankly at his mother, shocked that a boy as young as himself would be made to work a job. To keep up appearances (and to hide his surprise), he sampled the porridge in front of him, trying not to grimace at the unfamiliar flavor. His mom shooed him out the door when he was only half done with his food. James stood in the street, which was packed with foot traffic and the occasional worn-down car honking its way through the throng, unsure which direction he had to go. He thought about just running away somewhere to wait out this weirdness, but guilt over a sister he barely knew prevented him from doing that. "Vikal! Late too? Come on!" shouted a boy about his own age from across the street, somehow spotting Vikal through the mass of people. The boy started running down the street, so James made his way over to him so he could follow. After a few minutes of nimbly dodging between walkers to keep up, they got to a building which looked almost as run down as his house was. A rancid smell was wafting out of the open windows, making his eyes sting. Just inside the open door, James could see a dozen kids his age huddled around workbenches, applying glue and stitching to shoes. So this was his job. Working in a sweatshop to make shoes. On closer inspection, James could see the Adidas logo on some of the finished ones: the same company that he was signed to in his real life. Was that a coincidence? Had he tumbled into a cosmic karma experiment by virtue of using his basketball fame to sell shoes that were made by child labor? Sitting down at an empty seat and covertly watching his coworkers to get some idea of what he was supposed to be doing, James began to work on the shoes. As he smeared glue with his fingers on the precut soles, he suddenly remembered what he had been doing before this had all happened: he had been in his bedroom with an Instagram model whom he had successfully wooed. James wondered how Vikal was dealing with that situation.

Notre Dame LB Nyles Morgan has captaincy stripped prior to LSU game
Notre Dame LB Nyles Morgan has captaincy stripped prior to LSU game

Notre Dame linebacker Nyles Morgan is not suspended but he has had his captaincy stripped prior to Monday’s Citrus Bowl matchup with LSU. According to a report from Mike Vorel of the South Bend Tribune, Morgan is being punished for what the program is calling “an internal matter.” He’s also unlikely to start against the Tigers in his final game with the Irish. Originally a top 100 recruit who signed with the Irish after playing high school football at Crete-Monee High School in suburban Chicago, Morgan was named a Freshman All-American in 2014. After starting all 12 games in 2016, he returned in 2017 to earn a spot as one of the team’s captains for the 2017 season. Morgan has been a four-year contributor for Notre Dame and has recorded 241 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks in his career with the Irish. WalterFootball.com currently projects the senior to be a late-round draft prospect and ranks him as the No. 22 draft-eligible inside linebacker in the Class of 2018. However, it appears his career will end in controversy on Monday at the Citrus Bowl and it will be interesting to see if that also impacts his draft stock later this year. Update (1:13 p.m. ET): Morgan was not on the field to start the Citrus Bowl against LSU. More: https://goo.gl/P4jhcP

Football Highlights - Houston 19, Arizona 16

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Ex-Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen threw for 225 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice in his first game for Houston and the Cougars had to hold on to beat Arizona 19-16 in their week-delayed season opener on Saturday night. Houston (1-0) gave Major Applewhite a victory in his head coaching debut a week after the scheduled opener at UTSA was canceled due to Hurricane Harvey. John Leday's 81-yard kickoff return set up Houston's go-ahead touchdown with 45 seconds left in the first half. Josh Pollack kicked three field goals for Arizona (1-1), the last, from 42, yards cut the lead to 19-16 with 8:32 to play. Khalil Tate replaced Arizona quarterback Brandon Dawkins early in the fourth quarter and the Wildcats were at the Houston 32 when Garrett Davis' interception with 3:49 remaining preserved the win. Dawkins, who returned for the final three minutes, fumbled the ball away twice, one for a safety, in the second half. Allen, one of the nation's top recruits from suburban Phoenix in 2013, started 14 games and played in 20 for Texas A&M before transferring to Houston. He sat out last season as a redshirt. Allen, who completed 25 of 32 passes, threw 49 yards to Keith Corbin to set up his first TD pass as a Cougar, five yards to Linell Bonner to put Houston up 10-3 with five minutes left in the half. Arizona, helped by a pass interference penalty in the end zone, tied it 10-10 on Zach Green's 1-yard run 2:22 before halftime. Leday took the subsequent kickoff and the last man who had a chance to stop him, Kwesi Mashack, tackled him at the Wildcats 16. Dillon Birden's 3-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds gave Houston its 17-10 halftime lead. Visit TheAmerican.org for more information.
