Buckeyes beat rival Michigan 68-57 on the road as EJ Liddell leads second half surge (Feb. 12, 2022)

The 16th ranked Buckeyes took down Michigan 68-57 on Saturday night in Ann Arbor (0:04), rebounding from a troubling loss at Rutgers earlier in the week. Ohio State has struggled on the road all season (0:13), going just 4-5 compared to a perfect 10-0 at home. EJ Liddell led the way against Michigan, scoring a game-high 28 points and five rebounds as the Buckeyes improved to 15-6. Eli Brooks had 17 points in the loss (0:17) as the Wolverines dropped to 13-10. Liddell started a bit slow but once he got going, the junior forward was able to get whatever shot he wanted (0:22). The Big Ten Player of the Year candidate continuously found the middle of the lane for a fall away jumper (0:37) or bullied his way into the lane to finish at the rim. He racked up an impressive 28 points, despite struggling from 3-point range, to go with three blocks (0:25) in 36 minutes. He also knocked down a clutch triple (0:51) to extend Ohio State's lead late in the second half. Malaki Branham (0:29) has become the Buckeyes second most important player but seemed timid at times at Michigan. After scoring 19 points including four 3-pointers in the loss at Rutgers, Branham had just six points, three rebounds and one assist on Saturday. He didn’t play poorly but the expectations are a bit higher. The same can be said for Michigan freshman forward Caleb Houstan (0:32), who totaled only five points and two rebounds in 34 minutes. Wolverines survive scare at home from Northwestern 72-70, extend 3-game win streak (Jan. 26, 2022)

Michigan slipped past Northwestern 72-70 after blowing a double digit lead in the second half on Wednesday night at the Crisler Center. The Wolverines are now on 3-game winning streak since losing back to back Big Ten matchups. Caleb Houstan scored a game-high 18 points on 71.4% shooting from the field in the recent home win. Northwestern trailed 48-37 early in the second half before going on a 14-3 run to tie the game. DeVante' Jones (0:05) knocked down four free throws in the final minute to give Michigan the lead and Julian Roper's game-winning attempt fell short at the buzzer. Jones finished with 15 points (0:18) and six assists, while Hunter Dickinson had nine points and five rebounds before fouling out with just over two minutes remaining. The game completely slowed down midway through the second half with 26 fouls called following halftime and 46 fouls throughout. Three players fouled out including Moussa Diabate, who had eight points (0:31) and seven rebounds in limited playing time. Pete Nance led the Wildcats with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Boo Buie (0:09) and Ryan Young also had 13 points in the loss. Eli Brooks (0:15) added 12 points after a slow start in the first half. Houstan was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after making eight 3-pointers in wins over Maryland and Indiana last week. He continued to look more comfortable, connecting on 3/5 attempts from beyond the arc including a 3-pointer to give the Wolverines a 68-65 lead with 1:38 left. Terrance Williams also knocked down a big 3-pointer (0:37), his only bucket of the game, to help Michigan hold off Northwestern. Juwan Howard's team improved to 10-7 and will travel to face rival Michigan State on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats host first place Illinois next, who are fresh off a 56-55 win over the Spartans. Michigan bounces back from month-long losing streak with 83-64 win over Maryland (January 18, 2022)

Michigan snapped a 3-game losing streak with an 83-64 win over unranked Maryland at the Crisler Center on Tuesday night. The Wolverines recently endured a month-long skid including losses to UCF, Rutgers and Illinois, in addition to two other games against Michigan State and Purdue postponed due to COVID-19. Juwan Howard's team was winless since blowing past Southern Utah 87-50 on December 18. Howard tied his former head coach Steve Fisher as the fastest coach in school history to reach the 50-win mark after going 50-24 in just under three years at his alma mater. Hunter Dickinson returned to the lineup (0:12) after missing the loss at Illinois and finished with a team-high 21 points, six assists and six rebounds against Maryland. Moussa Diabate (0:17), Caleb Houstan and Devante Jones (0:21) combined to score 42 points. Eric Ayala scored a game-high 22 points (0:34) in the loss. The Wolverines, who shot an impressive 58.3% from the field, will face Indiana and Northwestern next. Quick Lane Bowl Postgame: Tim Lester, Broncos players discuss win over Wolf Pack (December 28, 2021)
Quick Lane Bowl Postgame: Tim Lester, Broncos players discuss win over Wolf Pack (December 28, 2021)

Western Michigan (8-5) rolled over Nevada (8-5) in the 2021 Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit on Monday afternoon to finish the season on a high note. The Broncos jumped out to a 14-3 lead and never looked back, securing a 52-24 win, as Jaxson Kinclaire added 105 yards and two touchdowns on the ground against his former team. Postgame press conference includes Western Michigan's Tim Lester (0:21), Jaxson Kinclaire (3:47), Ralph Holley (4:24), Ali Fayad (4:52), and MVP Sean Tyler (5:32), in addition to Nevada's Vai Taua (5:58), Toa Taua (7:04) and Sam Hammond (7:40). “Doing it in Detroit was really special to have so many fans and alumni here. There were tons of people from Kalamazoo that made the trip. To play the way we did in front of them, with their support, it all came together," Lester said in the postgame press conference (0:44) following the bowl victory. "The future is now and this bowl game matters. Last time we were able to finish a season like this was in 2015. We’re going to continue to work because we have a long way to go but I hope that our guys have a lot of confidence and hunger going into the offseason." Kincaide talked about facing his former program in the final game of his career (3:47) in the postgame press conference: “It felt surreal. We went to a museum on Thursday and seeing them all for the first time, my heart was racing. I was nervous and ready to play then. Today I calmed down and it was a great feeling to leave with some of the guys that I came in with in 2016. There were a lot of familiar faces. It was great to go out this way. (4:15) We had a chip on our shoulder this game because we had a guy go down. La'Darius Jefferson was out with COVID and we just made sure that there was no fall off." "Just humble, hardworking, and a great student and great representative of our program. Transfer players don't always become leaders in your program. Some do and he's one. Comes in, shows up and works hard every day. I'm hoping he becomes a coach. I'm trying to talk him into it. I will hire him," Lester later said about Kincaide's impact since transferring to Western Michigan. "It was a big game for him and to watch him go over 100 yards and protect the ball and see the vision. I was proud of him and he got in the end zone a couple times. What a great day for him." Quick Lane Bowl Highlights: Western Michigan whacks Nevada 52-24 at Ford Field (December 27, 2021)

Western Michigan (8-5) rolled over Nevada (8-5) in the 2021 Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit on Monday afternoon to finish the season on a high note. The Broncos jumped out to a 14-3 lead and never looked back, securing a 52-24 win, behind a stellar performance from MVP Sean Tyler. The sophomore running back racked up a game-high 281 total yards (0:50), including a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown early in the first quarter. Jaxson Kinclaire also added 105 yards and two touchdowns on the ground against his former team as the Broncos took home the second bowl win in school history. Nevada took an early lead thanks to Devonte Lee’s 34-yard sprint (0:08) on the opening series but had to settle for a field goal attempt after Marshawn Kneeland sacked Nate Cox on the ensuing third down. Brandon Talton's kick was good from 32 yards out but WMU responded immediately as Tyler housed a 100-yard kickoff to put his team up 7-3. A few minutes later, Kaleb Eleby added to the lead with a 74-yard TD pass to Corey Crooms (0:20). Nevada tried to keep up the pace as Lee pushed himself into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown (1:04) but the Broncos quickly answered on the other end. Eleby hit a wide open Brett Broske over the middle for a 20-yard touchdown (1:21) as the Broncos offense continued to move the ball at will in the second quarter. Kincaide then scored the first of two touchdowns against his former school, helping Western Michigan to a 31-10 lead at halftime. He spent four seasons with the Wolf Pack before transferring to Western Michigan in 2020. Lester’s team kept their foot on the gas as Kincaide found the end zone again (1:41) in the fourth quarter. The Broncos proved to be the much more aggressive and physical team on both sides of the ball in the 28-point win. “Doing it in Detroit was really special to have so many fans and alumni here. There were tons of people from Kalamazoo that made the trip. To play the way we did in front of them, with their support, it all came together," Lester said in the postgame press conference (2:12) following the bowl victory. We’re going to continue to work because we have a long way to go but I hope that our guys have a lot of confidence and hunger going into the offseason."
