Formel 1 in Spanien: Pole für Charles Leclerc, Aufwärtstrend bei Mercedes und Schock bei Aston Martin! Sebastian Vettel wollte es nicht glauben: Eigentlich hatte er sich eine Top-10-Platzierung vorgenommen. Doch daraus wurde nichts: Der umstrittene Aston Martin AMR22 war auch in der neuen Ausbaustufe, die dem Red Bull RB18 zum Verwechseln ähnlich sieht, viel zu langsam! Wie kam es dazu? An der Spitze setzte sich Charles Leclerc im Qualifying durch. Er gewann den Dreikampf gegen Red Bull und Mercedes - trotz eines Drehers im ersten Q3-Versuch. Hinterher war er sogar so gut drauf, dass er sich wohl verplapperte und die Ferrari-Strategie verriet... Max dominates Imola F1 by Peter Windsor
From the pole, and with fastest lap along the way, Red Bull's Max Verstappen dominated the Emilia Romagna GP at Imola on Sunday. And, this time, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc never had a look in. Adrian Newey's RB18 was superior to the F1-75 in every department - and in the closing laps, to cap it all, while pushing hard on a new set of soft tyres, Charles Leclerc spun from P3 to P6. With Carlos Sainz being nudged out of the race on the first lap, first chicane, it was a day that the packed Imola crowd will want to semi-forget - particularly as Sergio Perez underlined the RB18's pace with a very strong run into P2. Lando Norris finished an excellent P3 for McLaren; George Russell withstood late-race pressure from Alfa's Valtteri Bottas to finish P4 for Mercedes - but Lewis Hamilton, who finished P13, was never in the running even for a point. The Saturday sprint F1 race at Imola looked to be another demonstration of unabashed superiority by Charles Leclerc and Ferrari...until the right-front Pirelli on the F1-75 began to grain and thus to lose grip. Then Max Verstappen, the tyres on his Red Bull RB18 working perfectly, closed in for the kill. In this video, at 06:20, Peter Windsor offers a suggestion as to why there was such a difference in late-race tyre performance between the two cars. Calling on data from FP2 at Imola this morning, Peter also looks ahead to the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola on Sunday, when the protagonists will also be using harder Pirelli compounds. (Even so, the soft tyre still looks to be very raceable off the line, even with a higher fuel load.)
