Winnipeg Jets Are Confusing As Habs Win Streak Ends
Winnipeg Jets end the Montreal Canadiens win streak at 5 games as Marty St. Louis Habs score 4 straight to the tie an amazing with the Winnipeg Jets, but it wouldn't last. The Winnipeg Jets scored 4 in the first 10 minutes of the game while Sam Montembeault would remain in the net for the first 7 before Andrew Hammond would eventually replace him. Josh Anderson's Hat Trick would lead the Habs back to a 4-4 tie with the Winnipeg Jets but another 4 unanswered from Winnipeg would seal the Canadiens fate to a 8-4 loss. Mark Scheifele and Jake Evans do not end up fighting after the Mark Scheifele hit, but a small tussle ensues near the end of the game. Scheifele led the NHL Jets with 3 points, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Kyle Connor also had 3 point nights. Connor Hellebuyck was mediocre at best, and Andrew Copp Adam Lowry Nate Schmidt Paul Stastny Evegeny Sechnikov and Blake Wheeler all had 2 point nights. Dylan Demelo and Neal Pionk round it out with 1 point each. Cole Caufield had a goal and two assists, and Sam Montembeault made 35 saves for the Canadiens (11-33-7), who hadn't won consecutive games this season prior to this winning streak. They are 3-3-0 since Martin St. Louis replaced Dominique Ducharme as coach Feb. 9. Ilya Mikheyev and Pierre Engvall scored for the Maple Leafs (32-14-3), who have lost their past two games. Petr Mrazek made 20 saves. Anderson gave Montreal a 1-0 lead at 2:58 of the first period when he scored on his own rebound after he was set up by Jeff Petry. Caufield made it 2-0 at 19:10 with his fourth goal in six games under St. Louis. He had one in his first 30 games. Mike Hoffman scored 38 seconds into the second period to give the Canadiens a 3-0 lead. Anderson made it 4-0 with his second goal of the game at 15:58, and Rem Pitlick scored at 17:56 to give Montreal a 5-0 lead. Mikheyev cut it to 5-1 at 4:43 of the third period, and Engvall scored 45 seconds later at 5:28 for the 5-2 final. Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin left the game with three seconds left in the second period after colliding with Canadiens defenseman Chris Wideman. Cole Caufield scored his second straight goal at 2:22 of overtime after tying it at 2-2 with 10 seconds remaining in the third period. Paul Byron scored in his 500th NHL game, and Sam Montembeault made 26 saves for Montreal (9-33-7), which won for the first time in four games under St. Louis since he replaced Dominique Ducharme on Feb. 9. The Canadiens were 0-8-2 in the past 10 games, and won for the first time since a 5-3 victory against the Dallas Stars on Jan. 18. Robert Thomas scored a shorthanded goal, and Ville Husso made 27 saves for St. Louis (28-14-6), which had won consecutive games. Pavel Buchnevich gave St. Louis a 2-1 lead at 18:41 of the third period when he scored on a one-timer from the right circle. Byron made it 1-0 at 7:13 of the first period. He got behind Blues defenseman Robert Bortuzzo and redirected Artturi Lehkonen's pass to the goalmouth for his first goal in six games since returning from off-season hip surgery. Thomas tied it at 1-1 at 18:26 on a 2-on-1 with Buchnevich. Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry's wrist shot from the point hit the right post at 7:36 of the third period.
