Erst nach etwa 15 Minuten kamen die Kroaten besser ins Spiel und hatten mehrfach die Chance zum Ausgleich, doch Nielsen blieb ein sicherer Rückhalt. Ein entscheidender Moment war die Rote Karte gegen Abwehrchef Marko Mamić, die Dänemark nutzte, um sich erneut abzusetzen. Dänemark geht mit einem Vier-Tore-Vorsprung (16:12) in die Pause. Wie schon im Halbfinale gegen Portugal zündete Dänemark nach der Pause den Turbo und zog auf sieben Treffer davon.
