Dann wusste die Nagelsmann-Elf vor allem durch ein schnelles Umschaltspiel mit tiefen Läufen zu gefallen, was der Bundestrainer bei der EM noch bemängelt hatte. Gerade die beiden Zauberer Wirtz und Musiala prägten mit einem berauschenden Auftritt einmal mehr das Offensivspiel. Bei seinem 14. Tor im 22. Länderspiel musste Füllkrug den Ball nur noch über die Linie drücken. Den Rest hatten zuvor Pascal Groß, Wirtz und David Raum in einer feinen Kombination erledigt. Der Chancenwucher in der ersten Halbzeit hätte sich fast gerächt, als der eingewechselte Bendeguz Bolla die Riesenchance zum Ausgleich hatte (56.). Doch Robert Andrich verhinderte mit einer großartigen Rettungsaktion Schlimmeres. Es sollte eine Schlüsselszene des Spiels sein. Die anschließenden zwei Ecken der Ungarn brachten nichts ein, vielmehr entwickelte sich daraus ein Konter, den Musiala (58.) nach langem Pass von Wirtz vollendete. Nachdem auch Wirtz seine starke Leistung mit einem Tor aus der Distanz krönte, war das deutsche Fußball-Fieber 64 Tage nach dem Ende der EM-Träume endgültig wieder geweckt. Die DFB-Auswahl spielte sich regelrecht in einen Lauf. Havertz hatte mit einem weiteren Lattentreffer erneut Pech (72.), dafür traf der eingewechselte Pavlovic (77.) nach einer weiteren Vorlage von Musiala. Für Havertz sollte es aber auch noch ein Happy End geben. Nachdem er selbst gefoult worden war, verwandelte er den anschließenden Elfmeter eiskalt (81.).
