Caleb Wiley scores a goal in Atlanta United FC's 3-1 win over Sporting Kansas City
ATLANTA, GEORGIA---The first game of Atlanta United FC in the 2022 Major League Soccer season in front of its fans at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium is one for the ages on February 27. Playing in front of its fans, United FC beat the visiting Sporting Kansas City 3-1. The three goals were provided by Luiz Araújo, Dom Dwyer, and Caleb Wiley. Among the three goals, the most special one was provided by Wiley, a 17-year-old Homegrown player of United FC. Wiley scored the toe-touch goal in the 88th minute. Wiley is very happy with his goal. “It’s definitely a dream come true,” Wiley said. “I don’t score that many goals that often, so when I do I’m so speechless,” Wiley added. Earlier, Wiley was invited to the United States Under-20 Men’s Youth National Team for a training camp at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida last Jan. 24-Feb. 2. Atlanta United FC ends playoff run after 0-2 loss to New York City FC
ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The playoff run of the Atlanta United FC is over after they suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of the home team New York City FC at the Yankee Stadium on Nov. 21 at 3:00 p.m. EST. The visiting United FC played aggressively in the entire game but their efforts were not enough to stop the fourth-seeded New York to advance to the second round of the MLS Eastern Conference playoffs. New York City star striker MLS 2021 Golden Boot winner Valentín Castellanos scored the first goal for his team in the second half. The goal was Castellanos’ seventh in five games. A corner kick also initiated New York City’s second goal. In the 53rd minute, midfielder Maxi Moralez took a shot that hit the crossbar. Defender Alex Callens headed in the rebound to put NYCFC up 2-0. With the win, New York is set to face No. 1 seed and Supporters’ Shield champion New England Revolution in the conference semifinals on November 30. Despite the loss, United FC coach Gonzalo Pineda is still happy with the heart and grit of his team. “Today again was proof for me the heart of the team,” Pineda said. “They never give up. I love when teams don’t give up, even in a game like this. 2-0, playing away. The team showed a lot of character to come back, to try create chances. Even with a man down we were trying to push for the game. Those things for me are valuable, and I’m very proud of the heart of the team in general,” Pineda added.
