As a Michigan fan it brings joy and tears that we are finally once again in a position to compete for the Big Ten. No.5 (10-1) Michigan takes on No.2 (10-1) Ohio State at Noon this Saturday in the annual edition of "The Game". This is once again another opportunity for Jim Harbaugh, who is 0-5 against Ohio State, to bring Michigan to the Big Ten Championship game. This matchup pits Ohio State's elite passing offense against Michigan's underrated and potentially elite pass defense. Ohio State's passing offense is led by Heisman frontrunner QB CJ Stroud and NFL WRs Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, and Jaxon Smith Njigba. Michigan's pass defense is led by star Edges David Ojabo and Aidan Hutchinson along with DBs Daxton Hill and Gemon Green. Cade McNamara and the Michigan offense will need to put on a show like never before if their defense cannot stop Ohio State while Ohio State's defense should be prepared for Michigan to play in an aggressive manner. Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Doug Lesmerises discuss Ohio State's Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njiba and Garrett Wilson being left off the finalist list for the Fred Biletnikoff Award.
Highlights from Jaxon Smith-Njigba's 10 catch, 105-yard, 1 TD game versus Michigan State!
An Ohio State Buckeyes vs Purdue Boilermakers postgame fan reaction and if I'm being honest, Ohio State did NOT impress me. Sure, C.J. Stroud put up numbers (31/38 for 361 yards, 5 touchdowns and 0 interceptions). Sure, his top receivers balled out with 97% of the receiving yardage gained: Jaxon Smith-Njigba with 9 receptions, 139 yards and 1 touchdown, Garrett Wilson with 10 receptions for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Chris Olave with 9 receptions for 85 yards and 1 touchdown. And sure, the ground game did it's thing as well: Miyan Williams with 14 carries for 117 yards and TreVeyon Henderson with 13 carries for 98 yards and 2 touchdowns. But at the end of the day, Ryan Day continues to have BIG problems on the defensive side of the football. If they're not giving up a ton of passing yards, they're giving up a ton of rushing yards. If they're not giving up a ton of rushing yards, they're giving up a ton of passing yards. All it takes is for one team, the way Oregon did, to take advantage of that and turn yardage into points. Purdue was not that team! Aidan O'Connell balled out, going 40/52 for 390 yards, 4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions against a struggling Buckeyes defense. The running attack averaged 4.8 yards per carry on 19 carries, but had to abandon it completely being down by so much, so soon. It was the costly mistakes that were self-inflicted that made this one a snoozer from the jump, though, and those mistakes, in my opinion, will not be made when Ohio State comes to the Big House in Ann Arbor. The Boilermakers shanked a punt terribly early in the game, fumbled on a handoff, and could not jump on a kickoff, allowing OSU to pounce all over them not even two quarters into things. Here is my reaction to the performance of both teams in this matchup.
Ohio State's offense has performed at an exceptionally high level all season, but Saturday's effort stands out because of the high quality opponent they dominated. Garrett Wilson, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Chris Olave were uncoverable as C.J. Stroud tore up the Boiler defense. Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm said after the game that his team was "lucky" to hold Ohio State to only 59 points. Ohio State Buckeyes vs Nebraska Cornhuskers Postgame Fan Reaction and man- are the Buckeyes squeakin' by lately, or what? C.J. Stroud put up a lot of yardage in this one (405 to be exact) and threw the rock A LOT (54 times). 2 of those throws went for touchdowns, but another 2 went for interceptions. He'll want to clear that up quickly before he plays teams who are more capable of taking advantage of that than Nebraska is. Jaxon Smith-Njigba led the way for the Ohio State receiving core with an outstanding 15 catches for 240 yards and 1 touchdown. Chris Olave added another touchdown, 7 receptions and 61 yards, and TreVeyon Henderson hauled in 6 balls out of the backfield for 44 yards to go along with his 21 carries for 92 yards. It was Nebraska's Special Teams unit that really hurt them in this one. Chase Contreraz went just 1/3 on his field goals and made it to where the last drive for the Cornhuskers was pointless in terms of having a shot to win this one (which undoubtedly would have been Scott Frost's biggest during his career as Nebraska's Head Coach). Samori Toure did all he could to help Huskers Football out, catching 4 balls for 150 yards and 1 long touchdown of 72 yards. However, the man throwing him the ball, Adrian Martinez, was okay...but not at his best (16/31 for 248 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception). All in all, there was a lot to like out of Nebraska Football's play. They hung in there, played excellent defense (holding Ohio State's prolific offense to just 26 points), and making big plays on both sides of the ball. However, in the end, and much like the rest of the season, they were unable to make the clutch plays when they needed to the most.
For the second consecutive week, the Buckeyes earned a tough victory in the Big Ten. Jaxon Smith-Njigba broke a Buckeye receiving record and the defense played their hearts out as they outlasted Nebraska, 26-17 on Saturday afternoon.
