It was an extraordinary day of Test match cricket as ball dominated the bat yesterday. India get the first-innings lead. It was the pace bowler's paradise as 23 wickets fell on the first day for 270 runs. At the end of it all the Test match is nicely poised with India having their slight noses in front but South Africa are not out of it by any means. Today's play will be crucial for both sides. Let's recap you how day 1 panned out. The Proteas lost de Zorzi and Stubbs cheaply. It was South African skipper Dean Elgar who won the toss and elected to bat first on a challenging surface. Little did he know what was to follow thereafter. South Africa were blown away by a certain Mohammed Siraj as wickets fell at regular intervals. Only two players crossed double digits in David Bedingham. Kyle Verreynne as they scored 12 and 15 respectively. The rest of them fell for single digits as South Africa were bowled out for 55 in the first session of play in 23.2 overs. Mohammed Siraj was the star of the show with figures of 6/15 in 9 overs. Mukesh Kumar picked up a couple of wickets in his 2.2 overs. While Jasprit Bumrah picked up a couple of wickets for 25 runs in 8 overs. Only 4 bowlers were required to be used by the Indians. In reply India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck. Shubman Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma built a partnership of 55 runs for the second wicket with Rohit scoring 39 off 50 balls while Shubman Gill scored 36 off 55 balls. Both getting starts and getting out. Virat Kohli came in and looked at ease as he held the innings together with his 46 off 59 balls and top scored in the innings. India were 153/4 at one stage but then shockingly lost 6 wickets for 0 runs in a span of 12 balls to be bowled out for 153 with an overall lead of 98 runs. Wickets were shared by the South African pacers. Kagiso Rabada Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger all picked up three wickets apiece while there was a run out in the innings as well. Faced with a deficit of 98 runs South Africa put on an improved batting display. The openers Aiden Markram Dean Elgar put on 37 runs for the first wicket. Dean Elgar in his final innings fell for 12 to Mukesh Kumar. David Bedingham has just come into the crease. Aiden Markram is holding the innings together with his 36* off 51 balls as South Africa ended Day 1 in their second innings at 62/3 after 17 overs. Shubman Gill completes 1000 Test runs. Three bowlers used by India so far in this innings. Mukesh Kumar picked up a couple of wickets while Jasprit Bumrah got rid of Tristan Stubbs with a beauty. Siraj is still wicketless while Prasidh Krishna is yet to be introduced into the attack. South Africa win the toss and opted to bat first India make two changes whereas South Africa make three. Tristan Stubbs making his Test debut Elgar opens the batting in his final Test. Siraj draws first blood by dismissing Markram on two Elgar chops one back onto the stumps to give Bumrah his first and fall on four Debutant Stubbs departs on three as the Indian pace duo of Bumrah and Siraj breathed fire South Africa were reduced to 15/4. As a strangle down leg ended de Zorzi’s stay at the crease on two. Rohit starts positively and hits Ngidi for three boundaries in the second over KG Rabada draws first blood for South Africa by dismissing Jaiswal on a duck. When West Indies smashed 222 in the third T20I it seemed England would return home empty-handed. It’s pertinent to note that England had suffered a 2-1 defeat in ODIs. The tourists go into the final T20I as the favourites now. A quick change in fortunes courtesy two dominant batting displays. It’s 2-2 and all to play for at Brian Lara Stadium Tarouba Trinidad. England created history in the third T20I by registering their third-highest successful chase in the format – the top-2 came against South Africa. Phil Salt’s unbeaten century skipper Jos Buttler’s fifty and Harry Brook’s cameo against Andre Russell – the England batter smashed 24 off the final over – powered England home in a final-over thriller at St George’s Grenada. Salt followed up his unbeaten 109 off 56 balls with a 57-ball 119 as England crushed West Indies by 75 runs completing a series-levelling win in Trinidad. Buttler and Liam Livingstone also had a great time in the penultimate T20I as they hit fifties to support Salt. Defending 267 England struck at regular intervals and the hosts folded for 192 in the 16th over. Reece Topley grabbed three scalps while Sam Curran and Rehan Ahmed picked up two apiece. Buttler lauded his teammates for their strength of character after being 0-2 down at one stage and had special words of praise for Salt who has smacked a colossal 19 sixes and 11 fours across two T20I innings. “We showed so much character Buttler said at the fourth T20I’s post-match presentation. “I’m proud of the group. We were down but seems a confident changing room now. It has been an enjoyable partnership with Salt. He is playing brilliantly well.” England’s bowling needs some work. But they’ve the momentum and it’ll about keeping things simple and ending the tour on a high. West Indies on the other hand have lost their way after they had taken an early lead in the five-match series. Their batters got starts in the fourth T20I but they failed to stitch consistent partnerships. Russell has struggled with the ball after his three-wicket haul in the first T20I at Bridgetown Barbados. Shimron Hetmyer has been dropped following his poor showings with the bat. Rovman Powell the West Indies T20 skipper isn’t perturbed with two consecutive losses and is focussed on strategizing well for the series finale. “The boys like a final. We will come back with brand new ideas and a brand new game plan Powell expressed. “The fifth T20I provides an opportunity for us to do that. Sometimes when things are not going your way. You just back off. We will let them take some time off and spend it with themselves. It is a thinking game.”

We suffered our first defeat of the season, despite Gabriel Jesus giving us a first-half lead in a fervent atmosphere in Lens on Tuesday. The Brazilian finished clinically into the corner to fire us ahead against last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up, but they bounced back to score either side of the interval through Adrien Thomasson and Elye Wahi. We came close in the second-half, notably through Takehiro Tomiyasu and Reiss Nelson, but Lens battled to take the points. At the scene of our first ever Champions League game, way back in 1998, we returned to northern France for our 193rd game in the competition, but our first on the road for more than six years. For Lens, it was the first time they had hosted a Champions League match for 20 years. They created an atmosphere befitting the occasion. A huge tifo, spanning the height of both main stands, greeted the players onto the pitch at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, and the hosts predictably started with plenty of gusto. Kevin Danso shot wide and Thomasson headed past the post before we began to settle, and we took the lead with our first shot on goal. Bukayo Saka was alive to a stray pass and moved it on to Jesus. He controlled outside the area, then took the ball on a couple of strides before planting his shot low inside the far post, giving Brice Samba no chance in the Lens goal. The Brazilian has an excellent record in the Champions League, and after also notching against PSV Eindhoven on Matchday One, this was his 22nd goal in the competition. Kai Havertz came close to doubling the lead, watching a lofted Alex Zinchenko pass all the way his shoulder onto his left boot, but his volleyed effort was straight at Samba. Starting in their meeting with us in 1998, Lens had scored in every single home match in European football over the past 25 years, and they extended that run to 34 games with a well-hit leveller. David Raya’s pass was intercepted and with our defence out of position, Wahi found space on the edge of the box. He cut the ball back to Thomasson, and the Frenchman curled his finish perfectly beyond Raya. It was the first goal we had conceded on our travels this season, and the decibel levels rocketed once again. There was further bad news when Saka was withdrawn ten minutes before the break. He was replaced by Fabio Vieira. We finished the half on the front foot though. Zinchenko found the advancing Leandro Trossard with a wonderful pass inside the full back, but the Belgian’s first touch was heavy, and the chance evaporated. Jesus had a sight of goal just before the interval, when a deep cross fell to him in space at the far post. He took his shot on the bounce, but it sailed over the bar. Havertz carved out an opening for Trossard early in the second half. He found him near the byline and the Belgian sat his defender down with a deft turn, but his tame shot didn’t trouble Samba. Then came one chance for each side in quick succession midway through the half – one taken, one not. First Odegaard’s corner beat everyone in the box, and landed on the boot of the arriving Tomiyasu, but his fiercely struck first-time effort was batted away by Samba. Either side of the keeper and we would have been ahead. As it was, Lens went up the other end and took the lead with another crisp finish. Przemyslaw Frankowski got away in the right wing, pulled his cross back for Wahi, who smashed home. AHMEDABAD: New Zealand steamrollered defending champions England by nine wickets in the opening match of the 50-over World Cup on Thursday, demonstrating again their knack of punching above their weight in showpiece events. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra smashed rapid unbeaten centuries to set up New Zealand's successful pursuit of a 283-run victory target, which came with 13.4 overs to spare. It was a rematch of the heart-stopping 2019 final at Lord's in which England were declared winners via a now-scrapped boundary countback rule after the contest had ended in a tie. Electing to field on Thursday, New Zealand's bowlers restricted their opponents to 282-9, a modest total considering the firepower in England's usually formidable batting lineup. England's batters did not really fire but Joe Root (77), Jos Buttler (43) and Jonny Bairstow (33) provided some resistance. However, England could not string together enough partnerships and kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
