John Tavares, former 1st overall pick by the New York Islanders and noted franchise talent in the NHL, left the team on Long Island and instead opted to go back home to Ontario, where he signed a massive contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was a move that many were surprised by, and it signalled two different fates for the teams involved. On the one hand, the Islanders had just lost their best player, and appeared to be doomed to more years of mediocrity without Tavares' scoring ability. On the other, the Toronto Maple Leafs seemed to have acquired that big fish that would push them over the hump, and allow the young core of Auston Matthews, Morgan Rielly, Frederik Andersen, William Nylander, Kasperi Kapanen, Andreas Johnsson, and Mitch Marner to finally break into the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Well, two years after the signing, and the New York Islanders have never looked better. On the flip side though, the Toronto Maple Leafs have arguably gotten worse. The Isles are currently in the second round of the 2020 NHL Playoffs against the Philadelphia Flyers—making this the second year in a row making it to round two—and the Leafs have been eliminated in the qualifying round by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
