https://goutrgv.com/news/2019/2/24/baseball-rallies-for-sweep-of-north-dakota-state.aspx Feb. 24, 2019 – EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team scored four runs in the seventh to come from behind and complete the sweep of North Dakota State University (NDSU) with a 6-4 victory to close out the Al Ogletree Classic to on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. Down 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, UTRGV (5-3) loaded the bases against Alec Holcomb (0-1) on two walks and a hit batsman. One out later, junior Christian Sepulveda hit a two-run single. Senior Coleman Grubbs followed with a game-tying single. Sepulveda moved to third on the hit, and then, for the second day in a row against NDSU (1-6), Sepulveda stole home to give UTRGV the lead. Grubbs finished 2-for-5. Sepulveda reached base three times, including two walks. UTRGV added a run in the eighth on a bunt-single by senior Anthony Gomez that scored junior Hunter Lessard from third. That made a winner of sophomore Max Balderrama Jr., who gave up a run on two hits while striking out one in the seventh. Senior Nikki Rowe alum Ryan Jackson struck out three in 1.2 innings for his second save. Jackson now has nine-career saves, tied for the sixth-highest total in program history. UTRGV scored its first run in the third when freshman Vela alum Aaron Galvan doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Gomez sacrifice fly. NDSU got on the board in the second on an RBI-single by Jayse McLean and again in the third on a Jack Simonsen RBI-groundout. Senior McAllen Memorial alum Juan Carreon II took over with two outs in the third and retired the first eight batters he faced and nine of the first 10. With two outs in the sixth, however, Sean Noel doubled to right to put NDSU up 3-1. Noel finished 3-for-4. NDSU added a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Jake Malec. UTRGV opens up a four-game series against Rhode Island on Friday at 7 p.m. Friends and family four packs will be available, meaning four tickets, for hot dogs and four drinks for $25. http://www.goutrgv.com EDINBURG – Sophomore Elijah Alexander hit a walk off two-run home run to lift The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team to a 5-4 victory over New Mexico State on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium to close out the season. UTRGV (23-31, 8-16 WAC) entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 4-3 when junior Anthony Gomez hit a leadoff single to right center field. Alexander then took the first pitch he saw from Brock Whittlesey (3-4) over the left field wall for his fourth home run off the season and his second walk off hit of the season. UTRGV got the scoring started in the bottom of the third inning against New Mexico State (36-19, 17-7 WAC) starter Alex Pinedo. Alexander got the offense started with a triple to left field before coming in to score on an RBI single by sophomore Coleman Grubbs. After an out and a walk to senior Ivan Estrella, freshman Zack Parks delivered an RBI single to center field scoring Grubbs from second for the 2-0 lead. Junior Trevelle Hill made that lead last as he carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He finished with seven scoreless innings and gave up just one hit on the afternoon. UTRGV pushed its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single by senior Isaac Gonzalez that scored Grubbs, who led off the inning with a walk. In the top of the ninth, New Mexico State got a three-run triple from Nick Gonzales and then a throwing error on the play allowed him to score giving them the 4-3 lead and setting up the walk-off bottom of the ninth. Freshman Max Balderama (2-0) earned the win after recording the final out of the top of the ninth.

UTRGV (22-30, 7-15 WAC) scored its first two runs on its first three hits against Kyle Bradish (7-3) with two outs in the third, when junior Anthony Gomez, sophomore Elijah Alexander and sophomore Coleman Grubbs hit consecutive singles. That was it until the sixth, when Grubbs singled, stole second, moved to third on a single by senior Austin Siener and scored on an error. Grubbs finished 2-for-4. Bradish went six innings, striking out 12 while allowing five hits and walking one. Senior PSJA alum Jorge Flores (6-6) retired the first four batters he faced, but after Trey Stine reached on an error, NM State (35-18, 16-6) opened up the flood gates, scoring seven runs on two-run home runs by Tristen Carranza and Caleb Henderson, a two-run single by Joey Ortiz, and an RBI-single by Logan Bottrell. Then, after UTRGV cut the deficit to 7-2, NM State took advantage of another error to score twice on a double play by Ortiz and an infield-single by Henderson in the fourth. NM State scored two more unearned runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Ortiz. In the seventh,Marcus Still hit an RBI-double, and in the eighth, Stine hit an RBI-single to give NM State a 10-run lead. Nick Gonzalez added an RBI-double to complete the scoring. UTRGV and New Mexico State play the middle game of this series on Friday at 7 p.m. during Little League Night. Grubbs hit his home run on the first pitch he saw against Naithen Dewsnap (1-2). Grubbs finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. That made a winner of freshman Max Balderrama Jr. (1-0), who pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Junior Nikki Rowe alum Ryan Jackson pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save. UTRGV (15-10, 2-1 WAC) hit a program record-tying four triples over the first four innings This is the first time UTRGV has hit four triples in a game since March 26, 2006, and just the third time in program history. Sophomore Elijah Alexander hit the first triple to bring home Grubbs and put UTRGV up 1-0 in the first. In the third, with the game tie at 2 and a runner at third, senior Austin Siener and sophomore Tyler Torres hit back-to-back triples as UTRGV took a 4-2 lead. Junior Conrad McMahon added a two-out triple in the fourth. UTRGV also scored in the second when senior Ivan Estrella launched his third home run of the season over the center field wall, and in the sixth, when Grubbs hit an RBI-single. CSU Bakersfield (10-15, 1-2 WAC) scored a run in the second on an RBI-single by Jake Ortega, in the third on a groundout by Austyn Tengan, in the fifth on an RBI-single by Daniel Carrizosa, and in the seventh on an RBI-double by Mark Pena and an RBI-single by pinch-hitter Alec Daily. After playing 20 of its first 25 games at home, UTRGV kicks off a season-long eight-game road trip with the first of three at Utah Valley on Thursday at 7 p.m.
