In March 1973, Ali and Ken Norton battled for 12 rounds at what was then known as San Diego Sports Arena. Ali suffered a broken jaw and lost a split decision in a major upset. El futbolista portugués anotó el provisional 2-1 en la derrota contra los Gunners en el Emirates Stadium, en la que supuso su vuelta a los terrenos de juego tras perderse el encuentro entre semana ante el Liverpool por la muerte de uno de los gemelos que iba a tener con su pareja, Georgina Rodríguez. Después de marcar el gol, Cristiano fue rápidamente hacia el centro del campo para que se reanudara el partido, no sin antes levantar un brazo y mirar hacia el cielo, dedicando el tanto a su hijo fallecido. El tanto también significó el número 100 en la carrera de Cristiano con el United en la Premier League. Es el cuarto futbolista en alcanzar esa cifra, junto a Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs y Paul Scholes.
