With close to 4,000m of climbing and five categorised climbs, stage 20 should prove to be the most attritional stage of the race and one where only the strongest survive to contest the stage win at the finish. This is the last opportunity for anyone to challenge the race leader, and whoever ends the day in red will, barring disaster tomorrow in Madrid, crown themselves the winner of the 2022 Vuelta a España. At just 138.4km in length, stage 19 is the shortest road stage of the race - bar the final day’s procession into Madrid. This short distance, combined with two ascents of Puerto del Piélago (8.8km at 5.8%), should make for an explosive day in the saddle and one where the race leader could potentially be ambushed by his rivals. GC Showdown On Final Climb | Vuelta A España 2022 Stage 18 Highlights
Stage 18 sees the race heads towards its seventh and final summit finish atop the Alto de Piornal. The mountain itself will be ascended twice, with the riders first tackling its eastern face (13.5km at 5%) before then taking on its western face (13.3km at 5.5%). The two climbs are virtually identical but will either be hard enough to create big gaps between the GC men? Stage 15 is the Queen stage of the 2022 Vuelta a España. The peloton first take on the Cat-1 Alto del Purche (8.5km at 7.6%), before the only "Especial" category climb of the race: the 2,512m-high summit of Sierra Nevada. At 22.1km in length with an average gradient of 6.7%, this is the hardest climb at the race and one that’s certain to flip the GC on its head. Stage 14 sees the riders make their way into the infamous Sierra Nevada mountain range for yet another summit finish, this time atop the Sierra de la Pandera (22.9km at 5.2%) - a popular climb at La Vuelta having featured five times since its first appearance in 2002.
