Just before the final straight, he removed his racing vest and carried it in his hand while celebrating, which violated competition rules requiring athletes to wear their bibs throughout the race. After a protest by Spain, his gold medal was stripped and awarded to his teammate Yoann Kowal, while Mekhissi was relegated to disqualification.
