Weather frustrates Dolphins and Knights best efforts
Rain and bad light ultimately proved to be the main winner as the 4-Day Domestic Series encounter between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and VKB Knights ended in a draw at the City Oval in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday. The inclement weather, which led to no play on day two and just over 50 overs squeezed in on day three, again briefly returned on the final day, allowing for only 72 overs to be sent down. To their credit, both teams tried to initiate a result, before the visitors finished the game on 181 for three in pursuit of a target of 295. The Central Franchise resumed at the start of play on 174 for six, but three wickets in 15 balls early on by Keith Dudgeon (3/32) gave the Dolphins hope. However, Rudi Second, who ended unbeaten on 80 (138 balls, 11 fours), found support in a stubborn Tshepo Ntuli (one not out) to frustrate the home side, before they declared on 206 for nine. The hosts then attacked their way to 146 for three declared thanks to quick-fire half centuries by Sarel Erwee (57 off 72 balls, 10 fours, 1 six) and Khaya Zondo (59 not out off 45 balls, 10 fours). With only 35 overs available, the Dolphins needed to strike and strike early too. And they did that through Ethan Bosch (3/44) after he removed Grant Mokoena (2) in the first over, but a partnership of 126 between Raynard van Tonder (60 off 89 balls, 6 fours) and Keegan Petersen (71 not out off 92 balls, 7 fours) ended all hope of a result. Play was also halted in between due to poor light as the weather again had its say, while right-hander Petersen, one of the stars of the season, went past 5 000 first-class career runs.

Paterson damages Dolphins with three late strikes
A brilliant late burst by Dane Paterson left the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in a mess after the third day of their 4-Day Domestic Series encounter against the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras in Cape Town on Wednesday. The Standard Bank Proteas quick claimed four for 51 – three of those wickets coming in six balls – as the visitors were left limping to stumps on 265 for seven, a lead of 153. The late strikes undid the earlier hard work by Dane Vilas, Sibonelo Makhanya and Sarel Erwee, who all hit half-centuries. There was also a 10th career five-for from Robbie Frylinck that initially set the tempo as the visitors bowled out the hosts for 337. It had represented a good comeback from the KwaZulu-Natal side, who battled in the face of twin centuries by Vernon Philander and Pieter Malan on day two. However, the third day brought more joy as they wrapped up the tail quickly by claiming the remaining two Cobras wickets for 20 runs. Frylinck got both of them for figures of five for 86, with Okuhle Cele ended with three for 61. Erwee then led the way with the bat by anchoring the early part of the innings with his 54 off 178 balls (10 fours). He put on a 74-run opening stand with Vaughn van Jaarsveld (44), before sharing 55 with Cody Chetty (34). Three quick wickets opened the door for the Cobras as the Dolphins fell from 129 for one to 148 for four. But Makhanya (53 off 80 balls, 8 fours) and Vilas (68 off 113 balls, 7 fours) added 113 for the fifth wicket as the away side edged into a much better position. That was as good as it got, though, with Paterson getting Makhanya and Kerwin Mungroo (0) from successive balls. Dolphins maintain control after Van Jaarsveld ton
Vaughn van Jaarsveld struck his 19th first-class century as the Hollywoodbets Dolphins tightened their grip on the Warriors at the halfway stage of their 4-Day Domestic Series encounter in Durban on Tuesday. The left-hander made 138 (209 balls, 22 fours, 1 six) to anchor the first innings of the home side, who were eventually dismissed for 335 – a healthy lead of 160. That was then whittled down to 78 after the visitors reached 82 for one by stumps. But the day in general belonged to the KwaZulu-Natal franchise. They resumed at the start on 64 for none with Van Jaarsveld and Sarel Erwee (44) stretching their opening stand to 110, before the latter was dismissed by Sisanda Magala (2/58). Cody Chetty, Khaya Zondo (both 10), and Senuran Muthusamy (3) all followed in relatively quick time as the men from the Eastern Cape tried to claw their way back into the game. A career-best six wickets by Eathan Bosch put the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in a powerful position after the opening day of their 4-Day Domestic Series encounter against the Warriors in Durban on Monday. The right-arm quick grabbed six for 38 in 16.1 superb overs to roll over the visitors for 175 at Kingsmead, before the hosts replied with 64 for none by stumps. It completed the best day of the 2018/19 campaign thus far for the men from KwaZulu-Natal as they seek a first win. Helped by overcast conditions at the start, they opted to bowl first after winning the toss, although the initial decision seemed to backfire. In-form openers Eddie Moore and Gihahn Cloete put on 76 for the first wicket, with the latter striking the only half-century of the match thus far with his 63 (145 balls, 9 fours). The former, though, was first to fall when he edged Robbie Frylinck (2/33) behind to wicketkeeper Dane Vilas for 37. Colin Ackermann (4) also fell to the same bowler, before Cloete was the third wicket that followed after a 45-run stand with Yaseen Vallie (29). Prior to his wicket, the Warriors had reached 129 for two, but it was then the Bosch show as he ran through the middle and lower order to lead a collapse that saw the remaining eight wickets all fall for 46. He also ran out Clyde Fortuin (11) on what was an excellent day for the 20-year-old as he nabbed his maiden franchise five-for and improved on his previous best figures of five for 41 taken for KZN against Northerns last season. After the opposition were dismissed in 68.1 overs, Sarel Erwee (31) and Vaughn van Jaarsveld (28) ensured that all 10 wickets were intact by the close with the Dolphins ending day one trailing by 111.
