Davis vs Gamboa FULL FIGHT: December 28, 2019 - PBC on Showtime
Gervonta Davis thrilled a boisterous crowd of 14,129 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, winning the vacant WBA World Lightweight title with a twelfth-round TKO over the courageous Yuriorkis Gamboa in the main event of an entertaining card on SHOWTIME Championship Boxing. Making his lightweight debut, Davis, a two-time champion at super featherweight, went into the 12th round for the first time in career, showing that he carries power late. On Friday, Davis (23-0, 22 KOs) initially weighed in at 136¼ before coming back to weigh 134.8 pounds 90 minutes later. There was some speculation that the weight cut would zap Davis’s energy reservoir. He had a lull in the middle rounds, though still managed to land 120 of 321 total punches (37%) to Gamboa’s 78/617 (13%). “Coming into this fight, I knew Gamboa was a tough opponent, even though everybody was writing him off,” Davis said. “I was catching him and I was hurting him, even though he was alert. I believe my performance was a C-plus. “The (weight cut) wasn’t really a problem. I blame myself. I’m improving. I feel comfortable at both weights (130 and 135). I’m the top dog.” Davis was sharp early on. With 1:45 left in the second, he dropped Gamboa with a short left cross. Gamboa rose but limped for the rest of the frame. Afterward, it was revealed that he had tore an achilles and would require surgery. In lasting until the twelfth, Gamboa (30-3, 18 KOs) not only showed bravery, but also had his moments during the fight. “I’m a warrior, I kept going,” the former unified world featherweight champion said afterward. “But as soon as I felt it, I knew it was ruptured. I can’t put pressure on it.” Gamboa’s corner taped up his right ankle between the fourth and fifth rounds. It didn’t matter. In the fifth, Davis exerted more punishment on Gamboa, landing a left hook off of Gamboa’s chin, then a left uppercut. The fight nearly ended in the eighth, when, late in the stanza, Davis floored Gamboa again with another left. The Cuban stumbled to his feet and was saved by a bell that rang moments later. Gamboa showed great character in hanging in against Davis. But the tone of the fight had grown monotonous. Davis was winning almost every second of every round. Finally, in the twelfth, Davis connected with a beautiful left uppercut square on Gamboa’s chin. He crashed to the canvas a third time. How PSG strangled Pogba and destroyed Man Utd's Champions League hopes
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Against his hometown club, in his best form since joining Manchester United and freed from the restraints of Jose Mourinho, Paul Pogba was coming into the game further emboldened by two goals and a man of the match display against Fulham at the weekend. With United unbeaten in 11 games and Paris Saint-Germain left short in midfield since the club’s decision to dump Adrien Rabiot into footballing purgatory, meaning a midfield pairing of 60% fit Marco Verratti and an out-of-position centre-half in Marquinhos, this was Pogba’s chance to shine in the Champions League once again. He was meant to dictate, to dominate, to lead Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and their newly-found effervescence past the team that are again dominating their ‘farmer’s league’ but have continually fallen short in Europe’s premier club competition. Pogba came into the game looking like the midfielder most likely to bend the last 16 first leg to his will; with eight goals and five assists in nine Premier League matches under Solskjaer, thriving having been handed more creative licence by the Norwegian, it was all set up for him. Instead, his night ended in ignominy, red carded for a second yellow after planting his studs above the shin of Dani Alves. In truth, it should have been a straight red. Long before then however, Pogba had been registered ineffective by PSG. Early on there had been glimpses of quality, not least the lovely double touch that skinned Presnel Kimpembe down the right side. But gradually PSG strangled the Frenchman, and wrestled control despite ostensibly being outnumbered in the central midfield area. Marquinhos attached himself to Pogba and grew into the game, thriving in the role of shielding his defence and blocking Pogba’s attempted forward forays. Alongside him was Verratti, diminutive in stature but boasting limitless bravery (or arrogance) with his willingness to take the ball in any area - no matter how much pressure - and either relieve pressure by buying cheap free kicks or to get his side moving forwards. And once they had stifled Pogba in an attacking sense, they played on his weaknesses defensively. Arsene Wenger, speaking on beIN Sports, laid it out perfectly: “What Paris Saint-Germain did, is they blocked Pogba with Marquinhos in man-to-man marking and when Paris Saint-Germain had the ball, Draxler came in behind Pogba. “That’s where the chances were created behind the midfield of Manchester United.” Pogba, as Wenger also said, is the “one player in the middle who can create the difference”. With so much onus on him to produce with the ball United needed Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera to step up. But Matic simply didn’t have the mobility against the dashing whirl of Kylian Mbappe, Draxler and Angel Di Maria, while Herrera’s limitations were exposed by the creative nous of Verratti; Matic and Herrera struggled to get the ball into their attackers in anything like a threatening situation -

PAUL POGBA 8 - Returned from exile on the bench and raised his game for the occasion, helping to set up the second and third goals. JESSE LINGARD 8 - Continues to give United great energy. Involved in the best link-up play and scored twice, having won a penalty. MARCUS RASHFORD 8.5 - Solskjaer will be more inclined to give youth a chance, and Rashford was excellent despite conceding a silly penalty. ANTHONY MARTIAL 7.5 - Gifted Frenchman played with the handbrake off at last and was rewarded with a wonderfully worked goal.
