During the Brooklyn Nets - Milwaukee Bucks game 2 Eastern Conference Semifinals matchup, Kevin Durant (KD) put on a nasty sequence vs Giannis - a triple hesi hop double cross into an and-1 midrange jumper. The play highlights key skills, details, and biomechanics of KD’s game that any hooper can learn from. Lets take a closer look. The sequence starts with KD mini-hopping off his left leg - the same hand as the dribble - into a hesitation (hesi) and then left to right dribble crossover. He goes into another hop hesi here and this angle is much cleaner so lets break this one down. The hesi-hop setup does four key things: 1 - It generates a rhythm that optimizes the rest of KD’s movements. In movement science speak, it “primes the system” 2 - Creates deception because KD sets up the same way each time which limits the tells so the defender is guessing and/or reacting, as Giannis is here - a step behind. The hesi is the trunk KD”s movement tree and everything else branches off of it. 3 - It gives KD more time to read the defender’s reaction, process, and then proceed accordingly. Information is power. Here KD sees that Giannis is trying to catchup after the first cross so double crosses back over - dropping his hips to lower his center of gravity which results in better balance and change of direction and coming onto the inside of his left ankle to more completely deload that leg. 4 - Now we’re at the final sequence and fourth and final key - biomechanical advantages. KD hops off the same hand as his dribble because it allows him to use the other leg to push-off downhill, staying up on his forefoot with the downward force from the hop pre-tensioning the achilles and calf complex to generate a powerful forward thrust - aka the stretch-shorten cycle or SSC - that quickly shifts weight to his lead left leg. His left knee extensors - mainly the quads - and calf complex are now loaded to generate a powerful stretch shorten cycle and he’s up on his right forefoot (hard to see here) to again tension the achilles and calf complex. He quickly springs upwards having created enough space to get a clean look and it’s cash from there. That’s a bad man.
Skills scientist, movement expert, and youth basketball coach Dr. Raj, DPT dissects Lakers highlights and skills - through the lens of biomechanics, movement analysis, basketball techniques, and the mental side of the game - highlighting three elite plays from the Lakers vs New Orleans Pelicans game on 1.15.21 | Lakers highlights and skills | Three elite plays vs Pelicans (1.15.21) | Lakers skills analysis For reference, I’m a DPT (Doctor of Physio), sports scientist, youth basketball coach, researcher, mindfulness enthusiast and owner of 3CB Performance —providing sports medicine, performance, and mindfulness services online and in-person at clinics in West LA and Valencia, CA. The Lakers dismantled the Pelicans 112-95 on Friday night, continuing their current run of dominance. In this video, I broke down three elite plays and skills that stood out to me through the lense of biomechanics, technique, and mental ability. The first play is Dennis Schroder showing off some elite defensive skills. He picks up full court, dropping his hips and torso to lower his center of mass to improve balance and change of direction ability while using cross-over steps to quickly react and move laterally. As the opponent picks up his dribble, Dennis gets in tight and anticipates the pass. Look how low he is here, which allows him to take a direct line to the level of the ball. Cookies. And he did it again on literally the next possession. Great D. The second play highlights superb shooting technique and mechanics from Kuz. He calls for the pass from Bron and goes into his lateral side hop as the ball is in the air, timing it with his gather. The hop not only creates rhythm and balance but also note how he lands on the balls of his feet which creates elastic energy to spring up quickly. Everything is working in conjunction on his upwards motion and he releases the ball as he’s coming to the apex of his jump. Bottoms. These are some of the cleanest mechanics I’ve seen from Kuz and a testament to his ability to learn, modify, and adapt his shot. It’s truly a learning process. Last but certainly not least is AD’s defensive footwork and elite hip swivel. Zion attacks with a nice inside-out dribble but AD takes small, chopped steps to change direction, opens up his entire left hip to swing his right leg through and fluidly transition into his jump to pin the ball. Here’s the reverse angle, no one else in the league can make this play.

Sergio Aguero injury - Left knee meniscus | Fit for Champions League? | Expert injury insight | Dr. Raj, DPT explains Manchester City and Argentinean striker Sergio Kun Aguero’s left knee meniscus injury, likely surgical procedure, and if he can return in time for Champions League football in early August. Here’s a table of contents, header (sub headers): - 0:00 Intro - 0:40 The injury (quick anatomy review) - 1:05 Surgery & Return timelines - 1:33 Back for Champions League? Man City and Argentinean striker Sergio Kun Aguero left the game on 6/22 vs Burnley with a reported left knee meniscus injury, one that manager Pep Guardiola stated has been bothering Kun for the last month, and then underwent surgery a few days later under the care of Dr. Ramon Cugat in Barcelona, Pep’s orthopedic specialist of choice. The major question for player and team now becomes - can he make it back for the Champions League in August? In this video, I’ll answer that question along with a quick review of the injury & likely procedure. The injury Quick anatomy lesson The menisci are dual crescent shaped pieces of cartilage that sit between the femur - thigh bone - and tibia - shin bone- within the knee joint to absorb force, distribute load and reduce friction. The menisci can develop tears or lesions over time due to excessive wear and/or from acute contact, such as twisting or getting hit by another player. The procedure & return timeline Based on the reports that City haven’t ruled out Kun for the Champions League, it’s very likely he underwent a “partial meniscectomy” in which the damaged piece of tissue is removed via arthroscopic surgery using tiny instruments inserted through portals in the knee. If that procedure involved the medial meniscus, the return timeline averages about 6 weeks whereas if it involved the lateral meniscus, the timeline averages 8 weeks. Back for Champions league? From multiple reports and social media posts from his close friends, it sounds like the timeline is 5-6 weeks (indicating a partial medial menisctecomy, say that three times fast!). If true, that would have Sergio potentially back right in time for City’s 2nd leg vs Real Madrid on August 7th or 8th. However, whether Pep would choose to pick him for that intense & important of a match coming straight off injury and having only played limited minutes in the past 6 months due to the COVID-19 delay and now injury rehab, is a different story. If you’ve tried everything but your triceps just aren’t growing, you’re going to want to watch this. Here, I’m going to show you how to get bigger triceps by focusing your attention on the right area of this three headed arm muscle and the best triceps exercises for getting them to grow faster. I promise you, if you follow what I’m showing you then you will finally get this stubborn muscle to start packing on some mass. To begin with as always, it helps to review a little bit of triceps muscle anatomy. The triceps, as the name implies, is a three headed muscle comprised of the lateral head, medial head and long head. The lateral and medial head make up just one third of the overall mass of the triceps. The long head, all by itself, is responsible for two thirds of the overall size of the back side of that upper arm. Most often, it is the long head that gets neglected when it comes to exercise selection. Despite the use of big compound movements like the bench press and close grip bench press, the triceps just won’t grow as much as they should. This is because the lateral and medial head of the triceps are most responsible for extending the elbow under load. This is exactly what these popular pressing exercises do. Without a significant focus on getting that arm up overhead (to place an extra stretch on the long head) or back behind the body (to get a tighter contraction on the long head) you simply won’t maximize the overall development of the arm. That is easily fixable however. In this video, I’m going to show you three popular tricep exercises that can be improved to get more recruitment of the long head. Three of these are going to occur by taking advantage of more stretch while the other is going to help you get a stronger contraction. The first is the lying triceps extension. It doesn’t matter if you are using a straight bar or an EZ bar to do this. The key is twofold. First, you have to make sure that you keep your arm angled backwards even at the top of the movement. This helps to keep tension on the tricep throughout the entire exercise. The second is the level of stretch placed on the triceps muscle at the bottom. If you stop short, and don’t allow your arms to travel back far enough at the bottom then you are going to lose the ability to tap into an extra stretch reflex for a more powerful contraction. This is something covered in a recent video but needs restating. The next exercise is the triceps pushaway. This is often performed with either a cable or band setup. The key is not to angle your body too far forward when doing this. What happens is first, you limit the amount of stretch placed on the triceps once again. Standing more upright can greatly increase the elevation of the arm overhead. The second is the line of force of the cable becomes far less perpendicular to the forearm in the traditional version (which places less tension on the triceps muscle). Third exercise that you will want to improve is the dumbbell overhead extension. Once again, this is popular because of its ability to get a great stretch on the long head of the triceps. The problem here is the dumbbell can be both limiting in terms of the depth of the stretch and harmful to the shoulder joint in the process. If you switch out to a plate, you’ll not only get a deeper stretch but you will put your shoulders in a more biomechanically favorable position. Finally, if you want to get a stronger contraction on the triceps to assist in helping to grow bigger triceps then you want to do this last exercise. Instead of focusing all of your attention on performing standard triceps rope pushdowns with your elbows in front of your body you will want to figure out a way to get your elbow behind your body. This can be done with the offset pushdown shown. The longer rope on the working side will give you a chance to get more extension of the arm behind the torso. The non-working hand allows you to get a heavier load than a kickback while assisting with the eccentric overload as a self-spot on the way back. All of these exercise swaps will help you to build bigger triceps. You won’t be saying “My Triceps Aren’t Growing” anymore if you try these.
