At the 1968 Olympics, high jumper Dick Fosbury introduced a revolutionary technique that involved going over the bar backwards. Many coaches, reporters, and competitors dismissed the idea as strange and ineffective. Instead, Fosbury won Olympic gold and forever changed the sport. 70년대 중반, 프론트윙 사이즈를 줄이라는 규정을 내놓은 F1. "그럼 바퀴가 튀어나오는데요?" 당시 '티렐 레이싱팀'의 수석 디자이너 데릭 가드너는 튀어나온 앞바퀴의 공기저항을 줄이기 위해 앞바퀴를 작게 만들기로 함. 그렇게 공기저항은 피했지만 접지력이 떨어지고 핸들링도 불안해졌는데 앞바퀴 갯수를 추가한다는 아주 단순명료한 답을 내게 됐고 그 결과, 접지력 떡상, 공기저항 역시 유리해진 6륜차 'P34'가 탄생함. 76년 스페인 GP에서 데뷔하자마자 브레이크 과열로 리타이어를 선보였지만, 장점 역시 뚜렷했기에 시즌 중반부터는 꾸준한 포디엄을 기록했고, 같은 해 스웨덴 GP에서 우승을 거두며 F1 역사상 유일한 6륜차이자 우승차가 됨. 그리고 바로 다음해 19회 완주 실패를 기록하며 더이상 출전하지 않았는데 문제점은... 작은 브레이크 디스크로 인한 급격한 과열로 제동만 하면 브레이크 락이 걸려버림. 앞 뒤 제동력 배분이 꼬이며 앞바퀴 락으로 언더스티어 발생. 드라이버도 작은 바퀴가 보이질 않아서 조종석 옆에 작은 유리창을 뚫어 타이어 상태를 확인해야 했음. 뒷바퀴보다 1.6 배 더 회전해야하는 앞바퀴는 급속한 마모로 성능유지가 안됐음. 1977년, 타이어 독점 공급사였던 굿이어는 너네만 쓰는거 계속 만들 돈은 없다며 공급 중단을 선언. 복잡해진 설계로 하체가 매번 파손되는 고물이었지만, 장점도 있었기에 훗날 타팀에서도 6륜에 대한 시도를 했고 그건 후륜에 두개를 박는 방식들이었음. 지켜보던 FIA는 하고싶은대로 내비뒀다간 전체 팀들의 운영비 증가와 사고 증가가 뻔했기에 앞으로 바퀴를 네개만 사용하라며 6륜을 금지해버림. 낭만적인 결함덩어리는 사이버포뮬러 아스라다의 모티브가 됐고, 과감한 시도를 하던 티렐팀은 훗날 BAR, 혼다, 브런을 거쳐 최종적으로 메르세데스팀으로 변신함.
