Alabama basketball nearly stumbled but found its footing in time to survive its first test in the Big Dance. After watching a slew of opening-round upsets in the NCAA tournament, No. 2 seed Alabama was able to avoid one of its own as it got past No. 15 Iona 68-55 Saturday afternoon. Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, who previously orchestrated an upset over Alabama while in charge of Providence in 1987, once again made life difficult for the Tide with an inferior Iona team. Looking to hang with Alabama, Iona tried to take the air out of the Tide’s frenetic pace by holding the ball while in possession. The strategy worked for the first half as a frustrated Alabama side headed into the break clinging to a 33-32 lead. Alabama went on a stretch of nine straight misses from beyond the arc before Alex Reese stopped the bleeding with a 3 from the top of the arc to put the Tide up 45-42 with 10:47 to play. The Crimson Tide shook off a slow start before surviving a comeback bid on the road Saturday to lock up its first SEC regular-season title since 2002 with a 64-59 victory over Mississippi State. The Alabama men’s basketball team moved to 17-5 overall and 12-1 in SEC play with a dominating 115-82 win over Georgia on Saturday. The Crimson Tide led 51-38 at half and finished out with a 33 point win over the Bulldogs. Herb Jones led Alabama with 21 points, Josh Primo had 19, Jaden Shackelford added 18, and John Petty had 13. Petty became the greatest three-point shooter in program history having set the school record in three pointers made, three pointers attempted, and most three pointers made in a single game. Earlier in the day, CBS Sports released their March Madness tournament projections and listed Alabama as a number two seed. Alabama basketball rebounded from its first conference loss while surviving another slow start Tuesday night. The Crimson Tide fought back from an early double-digit deficit before nearly throwing away a sizable second-half advantage but ultimately did enough to grind out a sloppy 81-78 victory at South Carolina. Alabama (16-5, 11-1 in the SEC) held on for the victory despite failing to make a field goal over the game’s final 4:20. Down by as many as eight points with 3:37 to play, South Carolina (5-8, 3-6) was able to cut the Tide’s lead to a single point on a layup from Justin Minaya with 2.4 seconds remaining. Alabama forward James Rojas was fouled on the ensuing inbound and made both of his shots before Keon Ellis picked off the Gamecocks’ Hail Mary inbound attempt to seal the game. Alabama turned the ball over 22 times preventing it from pulling away from an equally careless South Carolina team that gave the ball away 19 times. However, the Tide stayed true to its blue-collar ethos, coming up with 18 offensive rebounds which led to 19 second-chance points. The Crimson Tide (15-5, 10-1 in the SEC) trailed by as many as 22 points midway through the second half but used a 21-2 run to trim the deficit to a single point with 1:11 to play. Looking to match its longest winning streak in 35 years, Alabama basketball never looked like the team that captured the attention of college basketball over the past month. The No. 9 Crimson Tide saw its 10-game winning streak snapped Saturday as it fell, 66-61 on the road to No. 24 Oklahoma on Saturday. With the victory, the Sooners (11-4) recorded their third straight win over a top-10 team, becoming the first to accomplish the feat since Michigan in 2014. Alabama (14-4) lost for the first time since falling to Western Kentucky on Dec. 19. Down by as many as 12 points midway through the second half, Alabama clawed back, going on an 11-0 run while hitting three straight 3s to cut the deficit to 55-54 with 6:52 play. However, that shooting touch slipped away from the Tide late as it missed its final eight shots from the floor to close out the game. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Following three straight blowout victories, Alabama basketball expected a dogfight Saturday night. Mississippi State might not match the talent of the Crimson Tide’s previous three opponents, but the Bulldogs feature two starting forwards listed at 6-foot-10 or taller and lead the SEC in rebounding. It didn’t help that Alabama was missing forwards Jordan Bruner (meniscus) and James Rojas (medical condition) for the matchup. However, Alabama was able to hit enough shots to stave off an upset, during an 81-73 victory inside of Coleman Coliseum. With the win, Alabama (13-3, 8-0 in the SEC) extended its winning streak to nine games, its longest run since the 2002-03 team recorded nine consecutive victories to start the season. The Tide has also won its first eight conference games, tying the 1986-87 and 1974-75 teams which also started SEC play 8-0. Mississippi State (9-7, 4-4) lost for the third time in four games.
