The Coppa Italia runners-up were chosen to play instead of the winners because of the aftermath of the 2006 Serie A match-fixing scandal. As a result, Juventus, the original league winners, were relegated to Serie B and replaced by Inter as champions. Since the Coppa Italia winners were also the newly appointed league champions, the Super Cup spot was given to the runners-up of the Coppa Italia, Roma. The match resulted in a 4–3 win for Inter after extra time. Roma took a 13th-minute lead through Amantino Mancini who nodded in after Zanetti and Toldo failed to clear Panucci's cross. Aquilani added his team's second goal twelve minutes later, sliding past Toldo and into the bottom left-hand corner after a defence-splitting one-two with Francesco Totti. The Giallorossi capitalised on Inter's indecision at the back, Aquilani finishing off a well-worked move to score his second and give the visitors a seemingly unassailable lead. But it wasn't to be. Vieira opened his scoring account for Inter on the stroke of half time to give the Nerazzurri a lifeline. The France captain rose in the box and powered a header from Figo's cross past goalkeeper Doni. Roberto Mancini made two early changes in the second half, bringing on Maicon for Fabio Grosso and Hernan Crespo for Adriano. The Argentine forward obliged with Inter's second goal four minutes later, stealing in at the near post to meet Stankovic's whipped cross and direct his header over the line. Playing with renewed belief, Inter continued to produce chances coming forward and drew level when Vieira slid Ibrahimovic's cross-shot into the roof of the net and lift the roof off the Meazza. Luis Figo completed the comeback in the first period of extra time, finding the top left corner with a well taken free kick to make it a good end to a bad start.

Sevilla missed the chance to break into La Liga's top four as they slipped to defeat at Real Sociedad, with Carlos Vela on target in his final appearance.The former Arsenal striker joins Los Angeles in January and bid farewell with a last minute goal to crown victory for the hosts on Wednesday night.Eduardo Berizzo's side would have leapfrogged Real Madrid with victory - albeit having played two games more - but saw their winless league run extended to three matches.Wissam Ben Yedder fired Sevilla level just before half-time after Inigo Martinez had headed Sociedad into the lead.But Sociedad regained the lead through Igor Zubeldia in the 76th minute and Carlos Vela made sure of their first league win in five matches by adding a third in the closing stages.Guido Pizarro, Pablo Sarabia and Ever Banega had all gone close for Sevilla in the second half and Ben Yedder had a low shot saved in the bottom corner in the first period.Getafe climbed into the top half with a 2-0 home win against bottom club Las Palmas.Former Cardiff defender Juan Cala headed Getafe into an early lead and Amath Ndiaye's low finish put the home side 2-0 up in the 15th minute.Alberto Aquilani went closest for Las Palmas, forcing a fine low save from Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita in the second half, while both sides created several other goalscoring chances.Getafe secured their second win in four games, while Las Palmas slumped to a seventh defeat on the road and remain below second-bottom Malaga on goal difference.
