UTRGV Baseball Walks Off in 10th to Complete Sweep of Texas Southern

http://goutrgv.com/news/2017/2/19/baseball-walks-off-in-10th-to-complete-sweep-of-texas-southern.aspx Feb. 19, 2017 – EDINBURG, Texas – Junior Cris Castillo hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning to send The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team to a 5-4 victory and a series sweep of Texas Southern University (TSU) on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. Senior Victor Garcia Jr. led off the 10th with a four-pitch walk against Fabio Gonzalez (0-1). Ryan Hawkins came in and proceeded to walk senior Austin Oakes. Then, after a sacrifice bunt put the runners in scoring position, Castillo hit a line drive down the right field line to end the game. That made a winner of senior Austin Douglas (1-0), who worked out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the top of the inning by getting a strikeout and a pop-up. UTRGV (4-0) trailed 4-0 after two innings, but loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth to set-up an RBI-single by freshman La Joya alum Anibal Leal. UTRGV scored another run in the sixth when, with Leal at second, junior Noah Lee hit a liner to left. Christian Sanchez booted the ball in the field, allowing Leal to score to make it 4-2. Senior Jose Garcia tied the game with a two-run home run that left the premises well beyond the left field wall in the seventh. The comeback was made possible by the UTRGV bullpen, which pitched 8.2 innings of scoreless relief. It started with senior Eddie Delgado halting a three-run second by TSU (0-4) and then pitching a career-high tying 5.2 innings and striking out a career-high seven while scattering four hits and one walk. Junior Josh Witherspoon followed with two strikeouts in two scoreless innings before Douglas entered with a runner on first and nobody out in the 10th to toss his scoreless frame. UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. when it opens up a four-game series against Prairie View A&M at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The game will be televised throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports channel 323. It's Coach Al Night. UTRGV Athletics will celebrate the grand opening of the Coach Al & Joan Ogltree Plaza, including the unveiling of Coach Al's statue, at 6 p.m. in front of the stadium. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative pin featuring Coach Al's retired number, 44.
