State of Sports Tech 2021 Keynote - DC Rainmaker
Here's the full State of Sports Technology Keynote from the Garmin Developer Virtual Conference 2021. I dive into what things worked, and what didn't work for the past year in 2021 - including all the highlights and failures when it came to sports and fitness technology. As with most years, I start off with the overall trends, and then dig into each of the trends deeper throughout the presentation. That is negligent to dangerous behavior” Mercedes’ insinuation that it was Verstappen’s fault was pointed out to him. Marko responded to that by saying “Then they are all blind. The replays showed that quite clearly. He went into our right rear wheel with his left front wheel and sent Verstappen into the barrier” He signed off by revealing what according to him would have been an appropriate punishment for Hamilton “You can't do that with the normal sporting code. I don't know what the maximum penalty would be, but such dangerous and reckless behaviour should be punished with a suspension or something” Fast Feed Lewis Hamilton doesn't “think, from [his] current understanding, that [he’s] in a position to have to apologize for anything. [They] were out there racing” [Post-race press conference] “None of us ever want any of us to ever get injured, that is never my intention, so I really hope that he is OK”, he further added Red Bull team principal Christian Horner “will look at [appealing for a stronger penalty for Hamilton], but [he doesn’t] think it makes much sense and will change the result anymore” [De Telegraaf] McLaren’s Lando Norris feels that the incident between Max and Lewis “is a very tricky one. Both drivers risked a lot, and Lewis got a penalty so they thought Lewis was to blame” [F1] “Going to the inside there [Turn 9] is a very difficult thing to do, especially because when you come in at such a high speed on the inside it is such a tight angle” “It is easy to do what Lewis did and understeer. I guess he misjudged it a little bit. It is racing. I don’t know, I don’t want to say anything”, Norris surmised His teammate Daniel Ricciardo feels that “ultimately Lewis went in too hot for the given level of grip and that’s where you see he just drifted up into Max” [Race Fans] “Completely unintentional, but just the nature of the aero on these cars and you just have to allow a little more”, he added However, he’s “certainly not going to sit here and judge and say he should have done this or that” Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is feeling “50% frustration, 50% happiness. Obviously going into this weekend there was absolutely no hope of fighting for a win here at Silverstone” [Post-race press conference] “So, this shows how great a job [they] are doing as a team. It’s not an easy situation for the team, but the team is working extremely well” He also stated that he “was really on it every lap. [He doesn’t] think there was one lap where [he] did a big mistake” Lando Norris pointed out that “because of the pit stop, [he] didn’t get the chance to be ahead and defend [third] for as long as possible” [F1] “It would have been nice to fight for it and have that opportunity, but fourth and fifth for [them] as a team is still a good result” AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly has revealed that he “had a puncture and had to box with five laps to go. It’s very frustrating to be coming away with no points” [F1] His teammate Yuki Tsunoda, meanwhile, is “quite happy to have come away with a point. [He] tried to stick to the plan, really focus on tyre management, and [he thinks he] achieved that well” Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen feels that he “had a nice battle with Sergio [Perez. They] went side by side in quite a few corners but suddenly the space was gone” He is “not sure what happened but [he] spun and that was it. Rally Croatia: Decided On the Final Corner - Day 3 Highlights | WRC 2021

Sébastien Ogier claimed a breathtaking last-gasp victory at the Croatia Rally on Sunday afternoon in the third closest FIA World Rally Championship finish in history. After a remarkable final day to Croatia’s maiden WRC appearance, the world champion relegated Toyota Yaris team-mate Elfyn Evans in the final kilometres to win the three-day rally by 0.6sec. Thierry Neuville finished third in a Hyundai i20, 7.5sec further back, but the facts do scant justice to the drama of a rally that will live long in the memory. The trio fought tooth and nail from Friday’s start on Croatia’s slippery roads near Zagreb. After trading places on several occasions, the final day opened with Ogier leading Evans by 6.9sec, despite a second leg puncture, and just over 10sec blanketing the three drivers. The drama unfolded when Ogier was involved in a road traffic collision en route to the opening speed test. Nobody was injured but the impact damaged the Yaris’ bodywork and the crucial aero package. Evans capitalised on Ogier’s problems to win the first two tests and the Welshman started the final 14km live TV Wolf Power Stage with a 3.9sec advantage, as Belgian Neuville still chased both. Interim times revealed Ogier closing on the Welshman before Evans slid wide onto a grass verge near the finish. It was the break Ogier needed and he scorched across the finish to record his 51st career victory, seal a Toyota one-two and regain the championship lead. “The emotion for us now is super strong,” admitted Ogier. “It’s been a crazy rollercoaster for us between the puncture and the issue this morning. I was glad to be still in the rally honestly. I guess that’s why we do this sport, for this emotion.” Neuville encountered his fair share of troubles during the weekend, including a poor tyre choice, spin and a missed junction in that final stage that meant the Belgian had to settle for third. Ott Tänak finished fourth after never feeling totally comfortable with his i20 but the Estonian had more than 90sec in hand over Adrian Fourmaux in fifth. It was a hugely impressive top-level debut for Fourmaux, who twice set second fastest times in his Ford Fiesta. Takamoto Katsuta scored his third consecutive sixth place finish in another Yaris. The championship heads to the first of a series of four gravel rallies at Vodafone Rally de Portugal next month. Matosinhos hosts the event on 20 – 23 May. Final positions 1.
