#indvseng #indvsenglive #1STODI PREVIEW: The T20I series that has just concluded had plenty riding on it given the T20 World Cup takes place in just seven months' time but the three ODI matches that begin in Pune on Tuesday (March 23) have, in the grand scheme of things, far less importance. There are two T20 World Cups before the next 50-over edition in 2023 and as a result, for both teams, the shortest format is their main white-ball focus at present. Even so, although both teams are missing some important players, there is enough quality in both squads to ensure a competitive series and for those individuals who are being given opportunities they might not otherwise have had, it is a chance to show exactly what they can do. There are also Cricket World Cup Super League points on offer as well which both sides will want to pick up as they look to ensure their qualification for that 2023 tournament. England currently sit third on the table while India, who have played three games less, are in tenth place. The recent records of both sides are mixed. England beat Ireland 2-1 last summer but then lost to Australia later in the season, their first ODI series defeat since they were beaten in India in 2017. That series against Australia was England's last ODI action; the scheduled series in South Africa before Christmas was postponed because of COVID-19 bubble breaches. India have also struggled of late, losing their last two ODI series. They were whitewashed by New Zealand last February and then also lost 2-1 to Australia late last year. England are set to give opportunities to a number of players who did not feature in the T20I series with Eoin Morgan looking to use the ODI format as an opportunity to blood some new players and provide opportunities to those who are not currently in the first-choice team. With Joe Root, Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer missing for reasons of rest and injury, there will be chances for Liam Livingstone, Sam Billings and Reece Topley to show what they can do. India too are missing some of their first-choice players in Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami and Ravindra Jadeja. Suryakumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya could be in line for their ODI debuts while T Natarajan and Mohammed Siraj may get the chance to build on their solitary caps. For each of these players, there is plenty to play for in this series. As there is for KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan, two more established players but who were dropped during the T20I series. India have not played an ODI in Pune since October 2018 when they lost to West Indies. They fared better the only time they have played England at the MCA Stadium, however, defeating them by three wickets in the 2017 series. That was a high-scoring game, with India chasing down England's 350 for 7 with two overs to spare thanks to centuries from Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav, the pair putting on exactly 200 for the fifth wicket. He will have to take a call on playing an additional all-rounder and have a sixth bowling option or play one of KL Rahul, who struggled in the T20I series, or hand a debut to Suryakumar Yadav. England England will name their team at the toss and in the absence of Joe Root, who has been rested from this series, they need to decide who to bat at number three. There are a number of candidates to play that role including Liam Livingstone, Sam Billings and Ben Stokes. After a quiet T20I series, Stokes might be marginally the favourite to move up the order. Jofra Archer's absence because of injury could open the way for Reece Topley to take the new ball.
