Former Cowboys player, NFL head coach Dan Reeves passes away at 77
Former Cowboys player, NFL head coach Dan Reeves passes away at 77

Former Cowboys player, NFL head coach Dan Reeves passes away at 77 Throughout his long and successful career in the NFL as a player and coach, Dan Reeves participated in nine Super Bowls. A hard-nosed running back with the Dallas Cowboys who would go on to be a head coach for the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons, Reeves has passed away at the age of 77. Reeves' family released a statement to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo: "Legendary NFL player and coach Dan Reeves passed away early this morning, peacefully and surrounded by his loving family at his home in Atlanta, GA. He passed away at age 77 due to complications from a long illness. His legacy will continue through his many friends, players and fans as well as the rest of the NFL community. Arrangements are still to be determined." Reeves remains the only person to have ever appeared in multiple Super Bowls as both a player and a coach. In eight seasons as a running back for the Cowboys, Reeves went to two Super Bowls and was part of Dallas' Super Bowl VI-winning team in the 1971 season – his second-to-last as a player. He would go on to become an assistant coach with the Cowboys and was part of three Super Bowl trips and one victory before moving on to a long and distinguished career as an NFL head coach. He was twice recognized as AP NFL Coach of the Year – in 1993 with the Giants and 1998 with the Falcons – but his days along the Broncos sidelines with John Elway at quarterback likely stand as the hallmark of his career. In 12 seasons with the Broncos from 1981-1992, Reeves piloted them to three Super Bowl appearances. He would move on to coach the Giants from 1993-1996 before taking over the Falcons' reins as head coach in 1997 until 2003. In 23 seasons as a head coach, Reeves concluded his career with a 190-165-2 record in the regular season. He led his teams to nine postseason berths and was 11-9 in the playoffs. A Georgia native, Reeves died three weeks shy of his 78th birthday. He played college ball at South Carolina as a quarterback, but went undrafted before joining Tom Landry's Cowboys in 1965. Dallas went 7-7 that season, but was a winner every season thereafter during Reeves' playing career. He finished his days on the field with 1,990 yards rushing and 25 touchdowns over eight seasons – his best showing coming in 1966, when the halfback tallied a team-high 757 yards and eight touchdowns. A versatile back whose career was ultimately slowed by a knee injury, Reeves also had 129 receptions for 1,693 yards and 17 touchdowns. Reeves, who began his coaching career as the Dallas backfield coach in 1975, was the Cowboys' offensive coordinator from 1977-1980 before becoming the Broncos' head coach in 1981 when he was only 37-years-old. Under the Reeves umbrella, the Broncos became an AFC powerhouse in the 1980s. In his dozen seasons with the club, Reeves captained Denver to six playoff appearances, five division titles and three Super Bowl runner-up finishes. In 1993, Reeves took over as the Giants' head coach and produced an 11-5 season in the first of four campaigns with Big Blue. His career concluded over seven seasons leading the Falcons. Reeves piloted the "Dirty Bird" Falcons of 1998 as the team finished the regular season at 14-2 and marched to the franchise's first Super Bowl before losing to Reeves' old squad, the Broncos. Dan Reeves leaves a lasting legacy in our game as a player and coach. His track record of success in Dallas, Denver, New York and Atlanta over several decades speaks for itself, marking a long and successful life and career in football," Falcons owner Arthur Blank said in a statement. "On behalf of the Atlanta Falcons I extend our condolences to Dan's family and friends as they mourn his passing." A member of the Broncos Ring of Fame, Reeves learned under the tutelage of Landry as a player and then a coach with the Cowboys. He then helped to build one of the most successful chapters in Broncos history. He was a success with every franchise he was a part of who played alongside and coached myriad Hall of Famers, and ultimately left a lasting legacy in nearly four decades in the NFL.

MAIL TIME ✉ ⏰ at Shenandoah Sports Cards in Harrisonburg, VA - Unpackaging an NFL 🏈 HOFer!

Today's mystery card is a 1970 Topps Football Jan Stenerud rookie card. As a kicker and punter in college, I have a soft spot in my heart for placekickers. This particular card represents some trailblazing history for the Norwegian-born soccer-style kicker. Not only was Jan the first NFL player from Norway 🇳🇴, but he was the first dedicated placekicker to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991. Stenerud came to the United States 🇺🇸 as a college student in the 1960s on a ski jumping scholarship to Montana State University - Go Bobcats! As legend has it, Jan had finished his ski training and was cooling down by kicking a few footballs. When the head basketball coach saw Jan's kicking cannon, he immediately contacted the head football coach, who offered Stenerud a tryout. In 1965, during his junior year at Montana State, aided by a favorable tail-wind, Jan kicked a record-breaking 59-yard field goal, which is still impressive today! Stenerud was a two-sport All-American in college and went on to have a Hall of Fame career in the AFL-NFL, helping the underdog Kansas City Chiefs defeat the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV, thanks to his 3 first-half field goals. Jan is a frequent autograph signer at The National Sports Collectors Convention and I hope to get his on-card autograph on this beautiful rookie card before I send it in for grading. Thank you to eBay seller travelingtransitman_3 for helping me add to my pc (personal collection) with this Jan Stenerud rookie!

Rest in Peace, Joe Walton an NFL player of the Redskins & NY Giants and Head Coach for the NY Jets
Rest in Peace, Joe Walton an NFL player of the Redskins & NY Giants and Head Coach for the NY Jets

This is a tribute video for Joe Walton. Joe Walton, a former player and coach in the NFL, passed away at the age of 85. Walton was a former American football player and coach who most recently retired after 20 years as the head football coach and creator of the football program at Robert Morris University. Walton played eight seasons in the National Football League as a pass catching tight end for the Redskins and Giants. He served as head coach of the New York Jets for seven seasons, guiding them to the playoffs twice. He has also served as an assistant coach for the New York Giants, the Washington Redskins, the New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers during a 20-year period. Walton was born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania in 1935, the son of former Washington Redskins guard Frank "Tiger" Walton. Like his father, Walton was a football star at Beaver Falls High School; both also stared at the University of Pittsburgh before playing in the NFL for the Washington Redskins, followed by coaching the Redskins and Pittsburgh Steelers. Walton was selected in the second round with the 14th overall pick of the 1957 NFL Draft by the Redskins and played with them from 1957 to 1960. In July 1961, he was involved in a three-team trade with the Redskins, Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants. The Giants received Walton and end Jim Podoley from the Redskins, the Redskins received Fred Dugan from the Cowboys and placekicker John Aveni, end Jerry Daniels, and defensive halfback Dave Whitsell from the Giants, and the Cowboys received placekicker Allen Green and a sixth round for the 1962 NFL Draft from the Giants that the team later used to draft George Andrie. Walton played for the Giants from 1961 to 1963. He was placed on injured reserve due to shoulder and knee injures during the 1964 season. At the end of that season, Walton retired. Walton began his NFL coaching career as a scout for the New York Giants (1965–68), then transitioned to wide receivers coach (1969–73). To gain coaching experience from George Allen, he moved on to the Redskins as running back's coach (1974–77) then offensive coordinator from 1978 to 1980. Walton moved to the New York Jets and served as offensive coordinator there for the 1981 and 1982 seasons. His work as offensive coordinator lead the Jets to hand over the head-coaching position to him on February 10, 1983 when he succeeded Walt Michaels whose retirement had been announced the previous day. Walton served as the head coach of the New York Jets from 1983 to 1989 and his teams achieved a 53–57–1 record. He guided the Jets into the NFL postseason twice. Walton was recruited by head coach Chuck Noll in 1990 to serve as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He served for two years until Chuck Noll retired after the 1991 season. Walton's NFL protégés include Rich Kotite, Bud Carson, Joe Theismann, Fran Tarkenton, Norm Snead, Ken O’Brien and Richard Todd to name a few. Condolences to his family and friends, and may he Rest in Peace.
