Toronto Leafs captain John Tavares was taken off the ice on a stretcher following a dangerous hit to the head. This unfortunately occurred in game one of the Toronto Maple Leafs vs Montreal Canadiens NHL play off series. He fell first by a hit from Ben Chiarot. As he was down, he took a knee from Corey Perry, and this was the hit that unfortunately did him in. Support the Channel: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sonamsportsmd Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/SonamsportsMD Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sonamsportsmd/ It goes without saying that this hit looked pretty bad and we as doctors are worried of potential head and neck injuries. However, the more pressing matter was the fans reactions to how the situation was handled and if the trainer provided appropriate care. Two acute injuries you don't want to miss in this case are head injuries (skull fracture, intracranial bleeds), and cervical spine trauma (fractures). Either of these, if bad enough can cause lasting neurological damage, and even death. In the context of first responder care of an athlete with a dangerous head hit, we try out best to keep them on the ground and to avoid having them stand up as seen with Tavares. The trainer in this case did his best to stabilize the spine, however, in an ideal world, Tavares would have been kept on the ground, on his back until they were able to board him. While the c-spine is being stabilized, other individuals are responsible for checking the ABC's. These include: airway, breathing, and circulation. Lastly, once the player is safely boarded and taken off the ice, it would be important to put on a c-spine collar and do a quick neurological exam to determine if there was any neurological compromise. Marcus Smart, NBA point guard for the Boston Celtics left Saturday's game against Los Angeles Lakers with a devastating left calf injury. Given the pop and mechanism of injury, many were worried about an Achilles tendon rupture. Gladly it was not! The team reported he likely suffered a calf strain and this was confirmed by MRI today. Marcus Smart suffered a grade 1 calf strain on his left side. We will also go over risk factors for an Achilles tendon rupture. Then I will proceed to review return to play and treatment for both an achilles tendon rupture and Grade 1/2/3 calf strains. Petr Mrazek, NHL Goalie for the Carolina Hurricanes, rushed off the ice in the first period against Dallas Stars. He was hit by teammate Max McCormick and immediately grabbed his right wrist in pain. Support the Channel: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sonamsportsmd Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/SonamsportsMD Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sonamsportsmd/ At the time of this video, he has been taken out with an upper body injury. We will review the footage, discuss injuries to consider, and review the anatomy of the area. Reports state that he was in a great deal of pain, and this was seen as he flung off his blocker as quickly as possible to grab his right hand. With this knowledge, it would be imperative to rule out a dislocation or fracture in the area. I will update in the comments once we have more information.
