Behardien reaches 6 000 runs but Dolphins fight back

Veteran batsman Farhaan Behardien went past 6 000 first-class runs as the Multiply Titans edged ahead of the Hollywoodbets Dolphins on day two of their 4-Day Franchise Series opener at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Thursday. The 34-year-old, who is also closing in on 5 000 one-day runs, was one of two half-centurions for his side on what was the second day of the new domestic season. Behardien top-scored with 68 (150 balls, 9 fours), while night watchman Eldred Hawken chipped in with 52 (100 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) to frustrate the visitors at the start of play. However, the Dolphins managed to hit back as the day progressed and eventually bowled out the defending champions for 308 – a lead of 39 – with Calvin Savage the best of the bowlers with four for 61. The end result would have been deemed a satisfactory one for the Durban side, especially after they returned to bat and reached stumps on 12 without loss. This after the Titans had initially made a strong reply to their 269 day-one total. When the Titans resumed in the morning on nine for one, Andrea Agathangelou (21) helped Hawken take the score to 47, before he fell to Savage, with his overnight partner next to go just after 100 was raised for his joint career-best total. Theunis de Bruyn (34), Behardien and Henry Davids (35) then combined to help the hosts to 213 for four and put themselves in a powerful position. But Kerwin Mungroo (3/48) helped Savage chip away at the lower order as the Dolphins hit back to send their opponents tumbling from 281 for six to 308 all out in 98.4 overs. The away side then returned to bat for three overs and they managed to get through to stumps unscathed thanks to Jason Oakes (seven) and Grant Roelofsen (five).

Mothoa's five wickets put Titans in control

A career-best five-for from Alfred Mothoa handed the Multiply Titans the advantage at the end of the opening day of the 4-Day Franchise Series season against the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in Centurion on Wednesday. The medium-pacer claimed five for 55 to help the reigning champions bowl out the visitors for 269 shortly before stumps, before replying with nine for one – a deficit of 260 at SuperSport Park. There were also two wickets apiece for Chris Morris (2/34) and Shaun von Berg (2/71) as the relatively inexperienced Dolphins batting line-up struggled. Only Sibonelo Makhanya troubled the home side with his own franchise-best score of 86 (156 balls, 10 fours, 2 sixes) as those around him struggled. The Durbanites had won the toss and opted to bat at the start, with debutants Grant Roelofsen and Jason Oakes (both 31) putting on a solid 52 for the opening wicket. But after the dependable Vaughn van Jaarsveld was cleaned up second ball for one by Mothoa, the visitors somewhat lost their way. Roelofsen followed not long after, while Senuran Muthusamy (7), Cody Chetty (34), Calvin Savage (15) and Robbie Frylinck (0) failed to assert themselves. It left the Dolphins on 143 for seven in the 55th over and facing an early bowl out. However, Makhanya finally found an able partner in captain Keshav Maharaj (41), with the pair adding 90 for the eighth wicket to frustrate the Titans. The former was eventually last man out with his side dismissed in 83.5 overs. The latter then claimed the wicket of Tony de Zorzi (one) to give the away side hope heading into day two.

Career-best efforts from Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Senuran Muthusamy highlighted the final day of the Sunfoil Series clash between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and VKB Knights as their clash ended in an inevitable draw in Kimberley on Sunday. There were also maiden career wickets for wicketkeeper Rudi Second, one of 10 bowlers used, as the visitors replied with 538/7 declared to the hosts 487/7 declared in a clash that was effectively a three-day encounter after day one was abandoned due to rain and a wet outfield. The end result was enough for the Dolphins to leapfrog the Multiply Titans at the top of the table with three rounds remaining. On what turned out to be a flat track at the Diamond Oval, Van Jaarsveld recorded his first career double ton and the second of the season when he struck a blistering 203 (237 balls, 27 fours, 3 sixes). His previous best score was 160 for the Dolphins against the Titans in 2012/13 and it was his 16th three-figure score overall. The left-hander also shared in an all-time team record partnership of 355 for the second wicket – a season-high for all wickets – with Muthusamy, who made 181 (348 balls, 20 fours, 2 sixes), his sixth career ton. The 22-year-old was playing in just his seventh game at this level, but did have a previous best first-class score of 145. Their efforts were nonetheless well short of the overall record second wicket stand in South African domestic cricket, which is 480 between Dean Elgar and Rilee Rossouw for the Eagles versus Titans in 2009/10. Calvin Savage, meanwhile, made an unbeaten 58 (66 balls, 4 fours, 5 sixes). Both Van Jaarsveld and Muthusamy were dismissed by part-timer Theunis de Bruyn (2/35), while Second claimed his first career wickets by taking 4/25 with his right-arm off-break, the best return amongst the bowlers. David Miller also bowled four overs for 19. The Dolphins walked away with 8.07 points, to move ahead of the Titans (70.76), while the Knights stayed third with 66.98 points with all six teams still in contention for the title.

THE Sunfoil Dolphins’ young pace attack set their side on the road towards victory as the Chevrolet Knights continued to struggle on day three of their Sunfoil Series encounter at the Diamond Oval. Daryn Dupavillon, Graham Hume and Matthew Pillans all weighed in to bowl the Knights out for 255 and earn a first-innings lead of 197, and after the Dolphins top order had set a target, Dupavillon struck twice in three balls to leave the hosts reeling.
