Paterson damages Dolphins with three late strikes
Paterson damages Dolphins with three late strikes

A brilliant late burst by Dane Paterson left the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in a mess after the third day of their 4-Day Domestic Series encounter against the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras in Cape Town on Wednesday. The Standard Bank Proteas quick claimed four for 51 – three of those wickets coming in six balls – as the visitors were left limping to stumps on 265 for seven, a lead of 153. The late strikes undid the earlier hard work by Dane Vilas, Sibonelo Makhanya and Sarel Erwee, who all hit half-centuries. There was also a 10th career five-for from Robbie Frylinck that initially set the tempo as the visitors bowled out the hosts for 337. It had represented a good comeback from the KwaZulu-Natal side, who battled in the face of twin centuries by Vernon Philander and Pieter Malan on day two. However, the third day brought more joy as they wrapped up the tail quickly by claiming the remaining two Cobras wickets for 20 runs. Frylinck got both of them for figures of five for 86, with Okuhle Cele ended with three for 61. Erwee then led the way with the bat by anchoring the early part of the innings with his 54 off 178 balls (10 fours). He put on a 74-run opening stand with Vaughn van Jaarsveld (44), before sharing 55 with Cody Chetty (34). Three quick wickets opened the door for the Cobras as the Dolphins fell from 129 for one to 148 for four. But Makhanya (53 off 80 balls, 8 fours) and Vilas (68 off 113 balls, 7 fours) added 113 for the fifth wicket as the away side edged into a much better position. That was as good as it got, though, with Paterson getting Makhanya and Kerwin Mungroo (0) from successive balls. Frylinck (0) followed in his next over, leaving Vilas the lone man fighting at the close.

Nabe nabs five before Frylinck leads Dolphins fightback
Nabe nabs five before Frylinck leads Dolphins fightback

Mthiwekhaya Nabe claimed a career-best and maiden five-wicket haul for the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras before Robbie Frylinck’s three-for helped the Hollywoodbets Dolphins storm back at the end of day one of their 4-Day Domestic Series clash in Cape Town on Monday. Rising young fast bowler Nabe claimed five for 60 as the visitors were bowled out for a seemingly below-par 225, but veteran Frylinck’s three for 20 sent the hosts tumbling to stumps at 45 for four. It meant the log leaders still trailed by 180 when an early close was drawn due to bad light at PPC Newlands. For the KwaZulu-Natal side, their strong fightback represented good character after the doom and gloom they found themselves in early on day one. After throwing away a good opportunity to win their first match of the season when they went down to the Warriors in Durban last week, they again started poorly in the Mother City. The returning Standard Bank Proteas Test star Vernon Philander (2/34), fit again after being sidelined with an ankle injury since the tour to Sri Lanka back in July, struck in the third over by removing Vaughn van Jaarsveld for 6. Top scorer Cody Chetty, who made 71 (10 balls, 14 fours), fought back with Sarel Erwee during a 75-run second wicket stand, but that ended on 90 when Nabe nabbed his first wicket by trapping the latter leg before wicket for 35. It was a regular loss of wickets from there as Nabe proved the thorn with his best figures since his four for 48 for Western Province against KwaZulu-Natal Inland in three-day cricket. He was well supported by Philander, who sent down 14.3 overs, Dane Piedt (1/25), Dane Paterson (1/44) and Tladi Bokako (1/53). Frylinck then dismissed Janneman Malan (6), Zubayr Hamza (17) and the in-form David Bedingham (0) – the latter two in success deliveries – to rock the Cobras. Okuhle Cele (1/5) added the scalp of Aviwe Mgijima, also for a duck, with Pieter Malan (18) left fighting a lone battle at the close.

Dolphins maintain control after Van Jaarsveld ton
Dolphins maintain control after Van Jaarsveld ton

Vaughn van Jaarsveld struck his 19th first-class century as the Hollywoodbets Dolphins tightened their grip on the Warriors at the halfway stage of their 4-Day Domestic Series encounter in Durban on Tuesday. The left-hander made 138 (209 balls, 22 fours, 1 six) to anchor the first innings of the home side, who were eventually dismissed for 335 – a healthy lead of 160. That was then whittled down to 78 after the visitors reached 82 for one by stumps. But the day in general belonged to the KwaZulu-Natal franchise. They resumed at the start on 64 for none with Van Jaarsveld and Sarel Erwee (44) stretching their opening stand to 110, before the latter was dismissed by Sisanda Magala (2/58). Cody Chetty, Khaya Zondo (both 10), and Senuran Muthusamy (3) all followed in relatively quick time as the men from the Eastern Cape tried to claw their way back into the game. Van Jaarsveld followed them after a partnership of 45 with Dane Vilas (38) for the fifth wicket with the score on 221. However, there was another strong stand of 50 between the veteran wicketkeeper and Sibonelo Makhanya, who hit an unbeaten 54 off 83 deliveries (7 fours, 1 six) that followed leaving the home side well placed at 301 for six at one stage. Rising young fast bowling star Lutho Sipamla then mopped up the tail in a devastating spell of four for 24 from 6.2 overs – the hosts bowled out shortly after tea. The Warriors lost the in-form Eddie Moore early when he nicked Robbie Frylinck behind for seven, but an unbroken 58-run stand between Gihahn Cloete (43) and Colin Ackermann (32) helped them fight back until the close.

Bosch bosses Warriors on Day One at Kingsmead
Bosch bosses Warriors on Day One at Kingsmead

A career-best six wickets by Eathan Bosch put the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in a powerful position after the opening day of their 4-Day Domestic Series encounter against the Warriors in Durban on Monday. The right-arm quick grabbed six for 38 in 16.1 superb overs to roll over the visitors for 175 at Kingsmead, before the hosts replied with 64 for none by stumps. It completed the best day of the 2018/19 campaign thus far for the men from KwaZulu-Natal as they seek a first win. Helped by overcast conditions at the start, they opted to bowl first after winning the toss, although the initial decision seemed to backfire. In-form openers Eddie Moore and Gihahn Cloete put on 76 for the first wicket, with the latter striking the only half-century of the match thus far with his 63 (145 balls, 9 fours). The former, though, was first to fall when he edged Robbie Frylinck (2/33) behind to wicketkeeper Dane Vilas for 37. Colin Ackermann (4) also fell to the same bowler, before Cloete was the third wicket that followed after a 45-run stand with Yaseen Vallie (29). Prior to his wicket, the Warriors had reached 129 for two, but it was then the Bosch show as he ran through the middle and lower order to lead a collapse that saw the remaining eight wickets all fall for 46. He also ran out Clyde Fortuin (11) on what was an excellent day for the 20-year-old as he nabbed his maiden franchise five-for and improved on his previous best figures of five for 41 taken for KZN against Northerns last season. After the opposition were dismissed in 68.1 overs, Sarel Erwee (31) and Vaughn van Jaarsveld (28) ensured that all 10 wickets were intact by the close with the Dolphins ending day one trailing by 111.

Piedt destroys Lions with seven-wicket haul
Piedt destroys Lions with seven-wicket haul

Dane Piedt was the star of a spectacular collapse by the bizhub Highveld Lions that saw them suffer a heavy 4-Day Domestic Series defeat to the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras on the third day of their match in Johannesburg on Wednesday. The Standard Bank Proteas spinner claimed seven for 118 as the home side lost six wickets for just 13 runs to lose by an innings and 71 runs at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium. It was Piedt’s 17th career five-wicket haul and set the visitors on their way to a second win out of two in the four-day competition this season. The victory had looked unlikely for most of the day, though, thanks to Stephen Cook recording a 45th ton in first-class cricket. The veteran opener, whose side started proceedings on 11 for none and were aiming to make up a massive innings deficit of 425, did well for most of the day. With Cook dropping anchor through his innings of 103 (198 balls, 11 fours), they reached 129 for one and then 214 for three after an assured 45 by Dominic Hendricks at the other end. After both fell to the bowling of Piedt, a 127-run fifth wicket stand between Wihan Lubbe and Nicky van den Bergh followed. The former, playing just his third franchise game, went on to post his highest franchise score of 81 (133 balls, 10 fours, 2 sixes), while wicketkeeper Van Den Bergh recorded a brisk 73 (83 balls, 7 fours, 1 six). However, both fell in the same over to Piedt as the tail then crumbled. The Lions dropped from 341 for four in the 96th over to 354 all out in the 102nd over to hand the Cobras a big win.

Malan, Bedingham hit tons as Cobras strengthen grip
Malan, Bedingham hit tons as Cobras strengthen grip

Centuries by Janneman Malan and David Bedingham led a fine all-round batting display by the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras as they strengthened their grip on the bizhub Highveld Lions after the second day of their 4-Day Domestic Series clash in Johannesburg on Tuesday. There were also half-centuries for three others in an utterly dominant showing by the visitors. They amassed 529 all out – a colossal lead of 425 – with the host then replying by reaching 11 for none when bad light ended play around an hour early. It left the Cobras in a powerful position at the halfway stage of the game. The Cape side had started the morning on 204 for two at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium with Malan and Bedingham extending their third-wicket partnership from 107 overnight to 178. That was when the latter fell for 102 (153 balls, 13 fours, 3 sixes), having completed his maiden franchise ton and fifth overall in only his second franchise game. Malan, also in his second game at this level, went on to record his eight-career ton and first in four-day cricket as he made 137 (249 balls, 16 fours, 1 six). Both fell either side of 300, with Kyle Verreynne and Jason Smith adding 96 for the sixth wicket after they hit 65s off 73 balls (8 fours, 2 sixes) and 100 balls (7 fours) respectively. Then came the third half-century of the innings by captain Dane Piedt, who blasted 57 off 68 balls (10 fours) that ensured the Cobras’ innings ended with a flourish. Left-armer Beuran Hendricks was the best of the bowlers with five for 101 – his 16th career five-wicket haul. The Lions then batted five overs and reached 11 without loss, before play ended 18 overs early with the home side trailing by 414.

Cobras outplay Lions with both bat and ball
Cobras outplay Lions with both bat and ball

Three wickets apiece from Tladi Bokako, Lizaad Williams and Jason Smith led a sensational bowling performance by the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras as they dismantled the bizhub Highveld Lions on the opening day of their 4-Day Domestic Series encounter in Johannesburg on Monday. Janneman Malan and David Bedingham then drove home the advantage by hitting unbeaten half-centuries to help the visitors reach stumps in complete control at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium. The pair were batting together with the Cobras on 204 for two, having earlier rolled over the Lions for just 104 in 32.1 overs. For the hosts, their performance would have brought back memories of a poor last season and quickly erased the good work they had done last week when they began 2018/19 with a win over the Warriors. New coach Enoch Nkwe saw his side win the toss and elect to bat at the start, but that was about the only thing that went their way. Openers Stephen Cook (2) and Omphile Ramela (1) were sent packing in the opening four overs by Bokako (3/31). There was only one passage of play that went their way when Dominic Hendricks (30) and Reeza Hendricks (41) added 67 for the third wicket. But both were taken out by Williams (3/40) as the Lions horribly lost their way from 71 for two to 104 all out – a colossal collapse of eight for 33. Smith was the man that ripped through the tail with figures of three for 17. Zubayr Hamza (31) helped the Cobras reach 97 for two before he fell, but it was then the Malan and Bedingham show as the pair recorded their highest scores at franchise level. The pair, playing only their second matches, scored an unbeaten 90 (158 balls, 12 fours, 1 six) and 65 (88 balls, 8 fours, 3 sixes) respectively and shared in an unbroken 107-run stand that left the game heavily tilted in their favour.

Van Jaarsveld, Savage help Dolphins thrive
Van Jaarsveld, Savage help Dolphins thrive

Half-centuries from Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Calvin Savage put the Hollywoodbets Dolphins firmly in the driving seat before bad light halted their charge late on the third day of their 4-Day Franchise Series encounter against the Multiply Titans in Centurion on Friday. The visitors had progressed to 294 for seven – a lead of 255 – when stumps were drawn with more than 20 overs still to go. It meant the draw looked like the most likely outcome with only the final day to come at SuperSport Park on Saturday. But the Durbanites will still be feeling proud of their day three effort that put them ahead in the game. They started the day on 12 for none and 27 runs in the red as Jason Oakes (18) and Grant Roelofsen (37) put them in the green with a 49-run opening stand. After the pair had departed, Cody Chetty (32) and Van Jaarsveld, who made 67 off 97 balls (9 fours, 1 six), added 76 for the third wicket to keep the momentum going. The Titans did manage to claw their way back thanks to three wickets by Shaun von Berg (3/64) that left the away side on 215 for six. Savage, who took four wickets when the champions batted on day two, then showed his skill with the bat by hitting an unbeaten 51 off 80 balls (3 fours, 3 sixes) to put the Dolphins back in charge. But the day ended prematurely after only 75 overs denting the visiting side’s chances of building an even bigger lead.
