The Penguins had an opportunity to defeat the Capitals in two straight games after dropping their first two contests of the season in Philadelphia. Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin got the proverbial monkies off their backs, with each scoring their first of the season. Goaltender Casey DeSmith had an absolutely brilliant assist on a 5-on-3 shorthanded tally by Teddy Blueger. Game Recap: Penguins vs. Maple Leafs (02.18.20) | Sidney Crosby’s Four-Point Night

The Penguins and the Maple Leafs squared off for what would be the first of two times this week. Before discussing any other aspect of this game, credit must be given where credit is due: with Evgeni Malkin being unable to play due to illness, captain Sidney Crosby put forth a four-point performance (1G-3A) to lead the way. Anthony Angello recorded his first career NHL goal, stating that before the game, he and Jared McCann had “a good feeling” about how Angello would play tonight. Bryan Rust tallied 1G-2A, with his goal being on the power play. For a season-long fifth-straight game, the Penguins scored a goal on the power play. Ultimately, Pittsburgh’s special teams play would be a large deciding factor, with the Penguins scoring three times on the man-advantage, and keeping Toronto’s power play scoreless. With this victory, the Penguins have moved into 1st place in the Metropolitan division.
