Rich Paul claps back at narrative that LeBron James needed Miami Heat
Rich Paul, the agent for Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and founder of Klutch Sports Group, is not a fan of the narrative that James needed the Miami Heat. Paul and James are close friends, and Paul spoke about the narrative on Gil’s Arena with former NBA player Gilbert Arenas. The narrative of – ‘OK, he went to Miami, they made him this way,’” Paul said. “What? Now, what did help was infrastructure, consistency, professionalism – which LeBron’s always had – that’s no question about that. But I’m saying overall, from a culture perspective, right?” James left the Cleveland Cavaliers – the team that drafted him in the 2003 NBA Draft – to join the Miami Heat in free agency ahead of the 2010-11 season. In Miami, he teamed up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to form a Big 3, but Paul doesn’t believe it was just James that was needing someone to team up with. “To create this narrative of, he needed somebody and they – you know?” Paul said. “No, it’s a shared need. ‘Because if I don’t go there, what are you talking about?’”

The debate as to whether Michael Jordan or LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time has many layers, but James' agent and longtime friend Rich Paul offered an interesting perspective that he believes gives his client the edge. During an appearance on Gils Arena Show, Paul explained that he feels James has had to overcome a level of criticism that Jordan never faced, which gives him the advantage in the GOAT debate: "Mike transcended the game. When Kobe came, Kobe was a silhouette of Mike. That's everything, which is great. But LeBron is the first player to have to deal with a 24/7/365 news cycle of sports and opinions from those that's not even capable or carry the expertise to give a valid opinion. "In addition to, 'I'm not really gonna do it how y'all want me to do. I'm probably going to decide how I wanna do it.' We all know that don't go over well, right? And so then, you have this environment in this sports society that's created and so now you have to root against. That's a whole other thing Mike never had to deal with because his hardest critic was probably, Peter Vecsey. "I just think LeBron's antlers is in platinum and Michael Jordan's may be in gold. Why? Because he had to be compared to Mike. Who did Mike have to be compared to?"

One week after the Celtics were named a possible suitor in the Kevin Durant sweepstakes, an NBA legend who once played for Boston is making his thoughts known on the matter. In a recent appearance on the “Rich Eisen Show,” Shaquille O’Neal swiftly shut down the idea of a Celtics-Durant communion, bluntly saying “hell no” to the possible trade. The Hall of Fame center denounced Durant for wanting to leave the Nets – a team the star forward had a large hand in building – by likening his trade request to abandoning a newly built home. When you put a house together, you should live in it,” O’Neal said. “You were the one who hired the architect. You were the one who got the other architect from Philadelphia. You, as a leader, should make it work, but you don’t want to make it work, I guess you go buy another house. You know he’s probably trying to get to a contender. It’s easier that way.” The Celtics’ initial push for Durant featured a trade package that was headlined by Jaylen Brown, who still has two years remaining on his contract. Though the Nets rejected Boston’s first offer and demanded several more players and draft picks in their rebuttal, the All-Star forward will likely be a part of any trade that materializes. According to O’Neal, however, it would be in the Celtics’ best interests to retain Brown. “You have a young nucleus that you can build and you can trust; I would keep [Jaylen Brown],” O’Neal said. “I don’t know what everyone else was watching, but Jaylen was hanging pretty tough with Durant. Looked like that to me.” O’Neal and others likely will have more clarity as to where Durant ends up in the coming days, following a recent report that the 33-year-old and Nets owner Joe Tsai will hold a meeting some time this week.

Andre Iguodala empathized with Russell Westbrook as the Los Angeles Lakers star is a constant source of trade speculation this summer. During an episode of his Point Forward podcast with Evan Turner on July 8, Iguodala vented about rumors of the Minnesota Timberwolves declining to trade Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards for Kevin Durant. "I was upset because it was put out there," Iguodala said at the 14:30 mark. "... Somebody leaked that information on purpose to kind of try to put a stain on KD's name." The 2015 NBA Finals MVP then pivoted to how Westbrook has become a regular target for stories. "I get pissed when they always have Russell Westbrook news like, 'This package went, they declined it. This team declined Russell Westbrook. This team declined Russell Westbrook,' he said. "And it's only feeding into that machine. What are you really trying to do to this man? What did he do to y'all?" Westbrook is a nine-time All-Star, the 2016-17 MVP and a future Hall of Famer. Throw in the fact that he's on one of the most recognizable teams in the NBA, and it's going to be noteworthy when he might be on the move again. But Iguodala's view is understandable. Beyond how unsettled a player can feel when his future is up for discussion, those conversations inevitably shift to his value on the court. It can't be easy having people meticulously pick apart your flaws and explain why you aren't as valuable as another player. Such is the nature of the best, however, and it's unlikely to change anytime soon.

The Los Angeles Lakers were a walking disaster in 2021-22, and Russell Westbrook, the team’s highest-paid player, was the poster boy for their failures. Westbrook was a poor fit with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, but one player who could have meshed well with them is DeMar DeRozan, whom James wanted on the team, according to talk show host Cari Champion. “I ran into LeBron at an event, and he goes, ‘Well, I was trying to get DeMar…,” Champion said on the June 13 episode of “Naked With Cari Champion.”The Lakers didn’t make a good impression on DeRozan when he took part in meetings at James’ house last summer, according to a September 2021 report by The Athletic. In that report, Bill Oram, Shams Charania and Sam Amick noted “a perceived disconnect between the Lakers stars and the front office.” Champion elaborated on the Lakers-DeRozan meetings from her perspective to her guest on the show, Wosney Lambre of The Ringer. “Now, you know the story was: DeMar DeRozan could’ve been a Laker,” Champion, a former ESPN personality, said. “Now, DeMar and I are friends. I remember specifically he meeting with LeBron, but he was saying Rob [Pelinka, Lakers general manager] wasn’t trying to give him the years. He wanted the years. LeBron wanted [DeRozan].
