A hard onslaught was expected for the Cutters this week as the PNG Hunters headed to Stadium Mackay for the very first time. The wet weather forced both sides to gruel through the mud and rain, with the Cutters aiming to climb out of their third last position in the Intrust Super Cup. Despite the determination of Mackay, the Hunters were not about to sacrifice their reputation without a fight. Putting immense pressure on their opponents, the physical size and power of PNG's front liners -- Sebastian Pandia, Wartovo Puara and Esau Siune -- easily matched that of the Cutters front three of Sam Hoare, Anthony Mitchell and Karl Davies. With physical strength looking equal, it was the Cutters ability to out-think their opponents that resulted in their roaring 20- 4 victory. Stepping off the plane just two hours before the game was due to start, the PNG Hunters had to take this disadvantage in their stride. Only three minutes into the first half however, their winger Garry Lo limped off the field, a shaky beginning for a team that usually powers off the start line. Fifteen minutes later, the Hunters lost Pandia to injury. The rest of the half only went further downhill for PNG, with Cutters winger and captain Liam Taylor scoring the first four pointer of the game after being on the end of swift offloads from Chris Gesch and Doug Hewitt. Wrapping up the first half for the Cutters, Mitch Day slipped through the gap scoring another four pointer for the defending premiers to lead 10- at the break. The second half went off with a bang with both sides showing even more brutality than the first half. The Cutters proved they were on their game with Taylor scoring his second try of the match out wide. The score sat at 14-0 with just half an hour of play left. Determined not to leave without making a mark on the scoreboard, Hunter George Benson was able to force his way through Mackay's seemingly rock solid defence, scoring with 16 minutes left in the game - but this would not be the last try of the night. Four minutes remained on the clock when the Cutters truly claimed the victory. Mackay's hooker Anthony Mitchell scored out of dummy half, diving beneath the goalposts and leaving the final score at 20-4. Cutters Coach Kim Williams was impressed with his team's defensive effort. "It was one of the best defensive efforts I've seen in my time here. Most teams play the Hunters and expect to come out second best in the physical side of it, but I think we muscled up and dominated them very strongly," Williams said. The PNG Hunters Coach Michael Marum was disappointed with the loss but thought Mackay's win was well deserved. "We lost three or four players in the first half, which I think changed the game around, our guys still defended well though, but full credit to the Cutters," Marum said. The Papua New Guinea Hunters (PNG Hunters) are a rugby league football club based in Kokopo, PNG. They were established in 2013 and will compete in the QRL's Intrust Super Cup. The Hunters' home ground is Kalabond Oval in Kokopo and their team colours are red, black and gold.
Despite the loss to the Devils the Hunters produced the odd sparkle of Melanesian Rugby League Magic. This effort by Gary Lo came too late to rescue a result for the team but will still be remembered as yet another piece of brilliant individual running from the flying winger.
THE Norths Devils returned to the winners' circle yesterday putting on an impressive performance to hold out the PNG Hunters in their 32-24 win. One of the biggest crowds to be seen at Bishop Park in years was treated to an entertaining match, and it was the Hunters who were on the board first when Wartovo Puara crossed the line. However, from that point -- the rest of the running was with the Devils -- who scored the next four tries in an attacking blast that was difficult for the Hunters to handle. With the Devils surging out to a 22-6 lead at halftime -- Hunters fans at the ground were willing their side on, urging them to change their fortunes in the second half. The visitors responded and started well in the return from the break, and scored the first try in the second half, with a sweeping backline movement resulting in a try in the corner. Norths however did their best to stifle a potential comeback with another try -- before PNG ensured the crowd remained interested, with big prop Esau Siune charging over the top of Devils fullback Shaun Carney to plant the ball. The conversion was successful and the Devils' lead shrank to 26-18. Devils five-eighth Kodi Nikorima then scored his second try of the match after capitalising on some good play out wide from Lachlan Maranta with six minutes remaining in the match. The margin proved too big to overcome -- but it did not stop the Hunters from scoring one more entertaining try -- with winger Garry Lo finding a gap in the defence to run almost the length of the field to cap off a thrilling match. This weekend, the Hunters will travel to Gladstone to take on the CQ Capras at Marley Brown Oval, while the Devils will have the weekend off with the bye. Great understanding between Sebastian Pandia and Roger Laka leads to an excellent try for the PNG Hunters away to the SC Falcons in Round 8 of the Intrust Super Cup 2014. The Hunters won the game 16-4.
GARY LO with a great take from a high ball and powerful run out of defence for the PNG Hunters against the Sunshine Coast Falcons in the Intrust Super Cup 2014
On the eve of Easter 2014, take a look back at the best of the SP PNG Hunters. Preparation pre-season was key to the strong start they made. Now with 7 games under their belt in their debut season in the Intrust Super Cup they have already proved their doubters wrong. With a brand of exciting, attacking football, and a team made up of "locals" the future of PNG Rugby League certainly looks bright.
THE PNG Hunters have returned to the winner's circle with a 36-26 victory over Tweed Heads Seagulls in their round seven Intrust Super Cup match at Kalabond Oval, Kokopo. After three games without a win -- although one was a 20-20 draw against the Easts Tigers -- the Hunters basked in celebration mode once again. "A win is a win, it's the two points we wanted," coach Michael Marum said after the match. The other two loses were to minor premiers Northern Pride 34-14 in Kokopo in round four and last week's 25-12 result against Ipswich Jets at the North Ipswich Reserve. All kind of mixed signals were been beamed out from the Hunters' early form with some wondering whether the PNG side's fairy-tale unbeaten run was for real. But on Saturday the Hunters muscled up and showed that when they knuckle down -- stick to their game plan the PNG side can be a destructive unit. There were periods of the game where they dug themselves into a tight corner with uncharacteristic errors which Tweed Heads capitalised on to put the heat back on the home side. Such was the case when despite opening up a handy 12-0 lead with tries through prop Timothy Lomai and halfback Roger Laka in the first quarter of the first half, the Hunters drifted off their game plan. "There are some areas we need to work on," Marum said. To their credit the Seagulls orchestrated some smart play using their experienced men with tries to five-eighth Michael Burgess and winger Kalifa Faifai Loa to claw their way back. A penalty goal to Jamal Fogarty locked the game up at 12-12 by the half-time period and the game became a wide-open contest once again. Faifai Loa celebrated with a double putting his NRL experience to great use as he mesmerized his opposite George Benson -- a side that the Seagulls exploited for most of their tries. He picked up his second, an unconverted try in the opening minutes of the second half to put the Seagulls in front for the first time 16-12 and start the short period of see-saw for the lead. Hunters' hooker Wartovo Puara wrestled the advantage off the visitors, a try which interchange player Noel Zeming converted for 18-16 before centre Luke Dumas put the Seagulls back in the lead 20-18. When "super sub" Willie Minoga powered over using brute strength to score and put the Hunters in front 22-20 the home side stepped up another gear in both attack and defence, which the Seagulls couldn't match. Lock Dion Aiye who had been quiet in the first half also shifted into top gear with incisive runs and smashing defence while man-of-the-match Laka was almost flawless with his kicks in general play -- the Hunters started to look awesome. When prop Gonzela Urakusie latched onto an inside ball to score and captain Israel Eliab who had set up Lomai's opening try, crossed for his own contribution -- the PNG side had opened up a sizeable 36-20 lead. The Seagulls reduced the deficit in the dying minutes of the game with a consolation try but it made little difference as the two competition points were already safely locked away. The Hunters now face a round double when they take on the Sunshine Coast next Sunday following by an Anzac day clash against the Burleigh Bears before their first bye round of the season. PNG HUNTERS 36 (Israel Eliab, Roger Laka, Timothy Lomai, Wartovo Puara, Gonzela Urakusie, Willie Minoga tries; Noel Zemming 4, Roger Laka 2 goals) def TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS 26 (Kalifa Faifai Loa 2, Luke Dumas, Michael Burgess, Matt King tries; Jamal Fogarty, Blake Anderson, Cody Nelson goals) at Kalabond Oval, Kokopo.
