Hunters halt Jets charge The Ipswich Jets made the trek to the Hunters’ home ground Kalabond Oval for their Round 13 game, looking for their first win at the ground. The Jets and Hunters clash brought together two in form teams, with the Jets having won five games in a row (and six away games in a row); while the Hunters had not lost at home all year. They were also chasing a club record of six wins a row. The Hunters had several changes with Henry Noki, David Lapua and Sebastian Pandia all out of the Hunters’ line-up, while for the Jets Liam Capewell, Brendon McGrady, Kurtis Lingwoodock and Gerico Cecil made way for Richard Pandia, Pat McCallum, Joe Ofahengaue and Chris Ash – meaning there were three Jets players on debut for this game. The match started well for the Hunters who in the fifth minute saw fullback Stargroth Amean slice through the Jets’ defence and over the line to get the Hunters up 6-0. The Jets pressed the Hunters’ line with attacking raids, but the Hunters held them out and seemed to gain confidence. It was the little half and captain Israel Eliab who came up with the big play after the Hunters had been defending; when on his own 30m line he received the ball and set off for the line on a 70m run that saw the Hunters out to a 10-0 lead. The Hunters’ scheming number 7 Ase Boas was keeping the Jets pinned down and controlling the game with his kicking game. However, it was a careless Hunter’s penalty that saw the Jets gain attacking momentum and Landon Hayes score his first Intrust Super Cup try. The Hunters were up 10-6 and the Jets had settled into the speed of the game when the Hunters pulled away again through Oti Bland Tony who got the Hunters to a halftime lead of 16-6. The Jets needed to start the second half well to get back into the game and they achieved this through a try in the 43rd minute to Hayes who was having a strong match. At 16-12 it was a tight struggle until Timothy Lomai found Brandy Peter with a nice short ball and the Jets couldn’t hold the Hunters who pulled away again 22-12. With 20 minutes to go, Eliab scored his second try to seemingly take the game out of the Jets’ reach at 28-12. Marmin Barba had other ideas and scored try number 17 for 2015 to keep the Jets in touch at 28-16. The Jets chipped away again at the lead when they scored with 10 minutes to go through Jets big bustling bench forward Billy McConnachie the score was now 28-22 and a dramatic finish was on the cards. The Jets’ Kurt Capewell used his footwork to beat Noel Zeming cold and score his fourth try of the year and it was now 28-28 with eight minutes to go. It was a hectic last eight minutes and the Hunters broke the game open when Adex Wera busted the Jets and scored a try in the corner to take the Hunters out to 34-28 with five minutes to play. The Hunters sealed the win with a try after Esau Siune broke the Jets once more and made a 30m run. He found Puara who got the ball onto Lawrence Tu’u to score and end the game with a score 40-28. The Jets will enjoy the week off this week while the Hunters will take on the Souths Logan Magpies at Port Moresby. Hunters down Blackhawks by Michael Thompson, Sports Reporter – Townsville Bulletin THE full might of Papua New Guinea’s first semi-professional rugby league side has provided the Townsville Blackhawks with a well-timed reality check. Fearless physicality was expected from the PNG Hunters on Saturday and that is what they delivered, with their enthusiastic forwards powering PNG to a 22-16 win over the ladder-leading Blackhawks. A fierce fightback from a 22-10 deficit could not stop the Blackhawks having their nine-game winning streak broken, but they still retain top spot on the Intrust Super Cup ladder with a superior points differential. Blackhawks hooker Anthony Mitchell is expected to play in his team’s next clash following this weekend’s bye after suffering a corked thigh near full-time, but Mitchell’s knock was not the only injury scare in what was a high-quality encounter. Hunters fullback Stargroth Amean was stretchered off the field near half-time and hospitalised after falling awkwardly into a tackle, but was discharged on Saturday night after being cleared of any neck or spinal damage. A lack of composure in attack from the Blackhawks was compensated by some brilliant scrambling defence, but the Hunters were simply too strong at Jack Manski Oval, with their second phase play proving especially dangerous. “I don’t think it was until the last 10 or 15 minutes that we had confidence in what we were doing and backed our attack, and leading up to that we were disjointed and we went away from what’s been working for us,” Blackhawks captain Daniel Beasley said. “We went into the game prepared for them to be very tough across the field, especially through the middle, and they’re a hard group of men who fight for 80 minutes.” A packed house at Jack Manski — including hundreds of parochial PNG supporters — watched as both teams engaged in an early arm wrestle, which was broken after 15 minutes when Hunters five-eighth Israel Eliab scored the game’s opening point. Plenty of big hits and dropped ball featured in the next 20-minute passage, before Noel Underwood got Townsville an equaliser running on to a Tom Humble short ball, but PNG got a 10-4 half-time buffer when centre Thompson Teteh ran through some sloppy Blackhawks defence. PNG were soon back in front, however, when Enock Maki barged over the tryline five minutes after half-time, and they pushed to 22-10 when half-back Ase Boas finished off a superb attacking play. That was when the Blackhawks launched into gear, with Kyle Feldt pouncing on a Jahrome Hughes grubber, and ISC debutant Mitchell Seri almost barged over for a last-gasp equaliser, only to be denied by some desperate PNG defence. “I certainly thought we had the side out there to win the game,” Blackhawks coach Kristian Woolf said. “The more games you win the closer you come to a loss sometimes, and the good thing from that is there’s no chance of us getting ahead of ourselves — and I don’t think we were — and it gives us a chance to go back and look at a few things.” PNG HUNTERS 22 (Thompson Teteh, Israel Eliab, Ase Boas, Enock Maki tries; Noel Zeming 3 goals) def TOWNSVILLE STINGERS 16 (Kyle Feldt, Tom Humble, Noel Underwood tries; Kyle Feldt 2 goals) at Jack Manski Oval. Good start guides PNG over Norths The Papua New Guinea Hunters consolidated a top five position with a blistering first half performance paving the way for a 34-16 victory over Norths Devils yesterday. The Hunters blew the Devils off the pack early at Bishop Park, virtually keeping pace with the clock for a 28-0 lead within half an hour. They overcame some sloppy handling in the second half – and a try-scoring burst from the Devils – to maintain fifth position on the Intrust Super Cup ladder; four points clear of Easts Tigers who were upset by Redcliffe on Sunday. Coming off a last-start win over Central Queensland, the signs for Norths were ominous early with the Hunters crossing via Brandy Peter in the opening 10 minutes. Some fancy footwork from Adex Wera increased the lead to 18-0 before skipper Israel Eliab and centre Thompson Teteh added their names to the swelling try scorer’s list. The Devils clawed back some momentum after the break, with fullback Ryan Millard claiming a double in quick succession to give the home side a sniff at 28-16 behind with 30 minutes to play. However, the desperate Hunters defence couldn’t be breached with winger Oti Bland Tony wrapping up the game in the dying stages. Brisbane Broncos-contracted centre Dale Copley crossed late in the first half for Norths as he continues to push his case for an NRL recall. HERE COMES THE BOOM! He may be one of the smallest men in the PNG Hunters but the diminutive hooker packs a punch. In Round 7 of the Intrust Super Cup 2015 Puara delivered a knockout hit sending the Mackay Cutter player reeling.
The Wynnum Manly Seagulls have booked their place in this year’s Intrust Super Cup finals series after an entertaining 28-10 victory over the PNG Hunters at BMD Kougari Oval. More than 3000 spectators were in attendance, including a large Hunters contingent, creating an electric atmosphere that the players thrived in. The Hunters play much like a Brazilian soccer team with their players interchanging positions and free forming their attacking structures at will. Back rowers were placing chip kicks, their halves were taking tough hit ups and each player had great footwork at the line. Wynnum would be the Chelsea of the Intrust Super Cup, staying true to their structure and gaining confidence from consistent execution of their sets. On Sunday the Seagulls were at their methodical best, as they convincingly put away the impressive Hunters with 14 points in each half to take the victory. Wynnum Manly had the early running and many opportunities to open the scoring. They eventually broke through with Graham Clark who twisted his body through the line to score. PNG then worked their way down field and moved the ball right to Thompson Teteh. The big centre was able to skip to the outside and bust through three Wynnum defenders for the try. Minutes before half time Ben Cronin scored to the left of the posts to extend the home side’s lead to 12-4. The five-eighth did a show and go at the line which caught the Hunters’ middle defenders napping as they were tracking across. Matt Seamark converted a penalty at halftime to have the Seagulls in front 14-4. Two minutes into the second half Seamark was able to perfectly place a cross kick under immense pressure for Daniel Ogden to score. The playmaker stared down the defender and took a big whack straight after the ball left his boot, as winger Peter Gubb knocked it back in the air to his oncoming fullback. To get back in the ball game, the Hunters heeded wise words from their supporters and “Got the ball to Garry!” The PNG fan favourite and leading try scorer of the Intrust Super Cup made his 23rd try of the campaign a memorable one. The winger has become a cult hero to his nation and the reason was evident when he beat the Wynnum defence for pace on the outside and powerfully stepped across field to beat Ogden and cross to the left of the posts. PNG at this stage were trailing 18-10 but were building momentum by offloading at will and tiring the Wynnum defence. With 17 minutes to go, Lo thought he was in again when a long ball found him all alone on the left flank. However the try was called back due to a forward pass and the missed opportunity would prove costly for the visitors. Midway through the second stanza, the Seagulls started to really grind out their sets and make some inroads back behind the ruck. The home side would eventually be rewarded when Jordan Kahu scored off a long cut out ball from back rower Mitchell Frei. The Brisbane Bronco had a strong outing, earning the players’ player award predominantly from his ability to beat the first defender with elite footwork and a powerful fend. Trailing 22-10 with eight minutes remaining the Hunters fancied themselves to score points. However a kick off that went out on the full and a whole hearted cover tackle from Gubb on a flying Adex Wara would keep the vistors at bay. A late Jake Granville try capped off a great display by the home side. It was a historic day for the Wynnum Manly Seagulls club as earlier victories in the FOGS Cup and FOGS Colts sealed their first ever Club Championship. All three grades sung the club song in the Chook Pen surrounded by their loyal supporters to celebrate a wonderful year. Tali hat-trick ignites Hunters PNG Hunters turned on a superb second-half performance to shut down the visiting Ipswich Jets 40-22 and keep their finals hopes alive in the Intrust Super Cup on Saturday. The Hunters were stunned early by a powerful display from the Jets, who spread and the ball around and used their star-studded backs like Marmim Barba and Brendon Marshall, who both collected doubles to lead 20-10 at half-time. But with the packed Kalabond Stadium crowd urging them on, the competition newcomers produced a trademark finishing burst to overrun the Jets. With punishing defence the Hunters restricted the Jets to a try-less second half with their only points coming from a penalty goal, while the home side unleashed their attacking arsenal to score their fourth consecutive win at home and stay in touch with the leaders with three games remaining. These are away this weekend against Wynnum Manly in Round 24 and Souths Logan in Round 25, with Round 26 a bye which gives the Hunters two points. Forwards Rod Griffin, Billy McConnachie, Keiron Lander and Matt Parcell were among the few Jets players in the visiting side who threatened to get through the Hunters’ relentless defence in the second stanza. Tackling in numbers, the Hunters continuously defused these efforts to prevent any momentum the Jets needed to give their speedy backline, which included Wes Conlon, the opportunity to repeat their first half display. Centre Jason Tali who was only drafted into the Hunters squad mid-season from the local Digicel Cup proved why he was a handy catch as he celebrated with a hat-trick. His second four-pointer levelled the scores at 20-20. Noel Zemming broke the deadlock from the touchline with his conversion and with 19 minutes still remaining, both teams needed something special to swing the match under their control. That spark came from the Hunters, with hooker Wartovo Puara scooting over to put the Hunters ahead 28-22. With 15 minutes on the clock it was still enough time for the Jets, who boast one of the best attacks in the competition, to claw their way back into the match. However, Tali put his team into safer territory when he used sheer strength to power over for his third try to put the Hunters on the way to victory 34-22. The two competition points were safety in the bag but it seemed the victory was incomplete without a Garry Lo special. Just on the stroke of fulltime the classy winger used brute strength to break out of several Jets tacklers to score under the posts to take his tally to 22 as the competition’s leading try scorer. THE points flowed at Piggabeen Sports yesterday as the Tweed Heads Seagulls scored a big 60-28 win over the visiting PNG Hunters in their round 19 Intrust Super Cup match. One of the biggest crowds seen at the northern NSW ground in recent years were treated to an entertaining, free-flowing match as the Seagulls continued their unbeaten run -- with this result their 11th game in a row without a loss. Interestingly -- it was the Hunters back in round 7 in Kokopo Oval who were last able to inflict a defeat on the black and white stripes. While the Hunters looked the stronger outfit in the first moments of the match, looking refreshed from a week off; it was the Seagulls who could do no wrong in the first half, going out to an impressive 32-0 lead following tries to Ricardo Parata from an intercept, co-captains Matt King and James Wood, Queensland Residents forward Pele Peletelese, halfback Michael Burgess and forward Cory Blair. At the return to the field -- again it was the Hunters who looked dangerous early -- and it appeared they would get their first points after a break by Dion Aiye sparked a powerful Noel Zemming run that for all money looked like producing points. However, the Seagulls held them out and were able to turn defence into attack with Jamal Fogarty (moved to five-eighth for this match) scoring at the other end of the field after a Blair flick-pass and fortuitous bounce from a Wood kick ahead. A rare Tweed Heads error gave the Hunters their first real opportunity and it was taken with the returning Thompson Teteh crossing for the first of his two tries for the afternoon. The two sides then went try for try as Tweed Heads (via Blake Anderson) and Willie Minoga (Hunters) crossed in quick succession. The home side then went on another roll, with Luke Dumas and then both Parata and Burgess crossing for their second tries; resulting in a 60-10 lead for the Seagulls with just over 10 minutes remaining. Another Tweed error gave the Hunters some much-needed possession and this sparked a mini-revival from the Hunters -- who then ran in four tries in a row with Zemming crossing, followed by Aiye and big winger Garry Lo -- who is now out in front of the leading try scorers tally with 19. In the final minute of the match, Teteh went over to get his second -- giving the Hunters some hope of carrying some positive momentum into their next game -- a match at home in Kokopo against the Sunshine Coast. Tweed Heads will have the bye next weekend. The Easts Tigers returned home from Papua New Guinea with more than just the two competition points on the weekend. Tigers coach Craig Ingebrigtsen described the trip to Kokopo as an amazing "life experience". "I was rapt to get the points because it's a really hard place to go over and win at. But the biggest thing we got out of the trip was the respect for the local community. "We did the walk through the markets and it was a real eye opener to see how the rest of the world live." Without a number of front-liners, the Tigers lifted in the energy-sapping humidity to come away with a tenacious 22-16 victory at Kalabond Oval. Experienced trio Jacob Ling, Shane Neumann and Dane Hogan led the charge, while talented winger Jarrod McInally provided the finishing touches with two tries. Despite the oppressive conditions, the Tigers got "stronger and stronger" as the match wore on. PNG took a 12-10 lead into half-time, but Ingebrigtsen was always confident they could come out on top. "We defended really well and they got a little frustrated," he said. "We just sort of stifled their attack and got real good numbers in tackles. Even though we were down 12-10 at half time, I was really confident we could win." Easts have the bye this weekend, while the Hunters will travel to Cairns to play the Northern Pride at Barlow Park.
