Tour de France 2021 Stage 16 Highlights | Rain Soaked Pyrenean Test
A wet, rolling stage through the Pyrenees faced the depleted peloton after the second rest day. Would stage hunters like Patrick Konrad, Magnus Cort, and Omar Fraile be able to make the breakaway stick on a day that, on paper, suited them perfectly? Or would the GC contenders apply some pressure to Tadej Pogačar?. While it may not look quite as difficult as its Pyrenean predecessor, it’s the kind of stage where we could see a successful ambush sprung, particularly in the valley sections between the three main climbs - the Col de Port (11.4km at 5.1%), Col de la Core (13.1km at 6.6%) and Col de Portet-d’Aspet (5.4km at 7.1%). Tour de France 2021 Stage 15 Highlights | Climbers Do Battle In The Pyrenees
As the tour heads into the Pyrenees proper, a breakaway including some big names like van Aert, Alaphilippe and Valverde fought to try to take the stage ahead of the chasing GC group. Woods, Poels and Quintana once again traded blows in the king of the mountains competition. With four giant Pyrenean climbs, 4,500m of total elevation gain and a visit to 2,408m altitude, stage 15 is one of the toughest stages of the race and a day that many riders will be dreading from the moment they leave Brest this Saturday. Climbing may start in earnest, but it’s not until the riders pass through the intermediate sprint in Olette that they’ll hit the foot of the first categorised climb - the Montée de Mont-Louis (8.4km at 5.7%). This climb then gives way to the tamer Col de Puymorens (5.8km at 4.7%) before the highest climb of this year’s Tour - the Port d’Envalira (10.7km at 5.9%) - rears its ugly head. Tour de France 2021 Stage 13 Highlights| Can Mark Cavendish Equal Eddy Merckx's Stage Wins Record?
Stage 13 presents another opportunity for the sprinters to flex their muscles before the race enters the Pyrenees. Mark Cavendish sits just one stage win behind Eddy Merck's stage win record of 34 - could today be the day for the Manx Missile? Another day for the sprinters awaits on stage 13, a 220km-long transitional stage from Nîmes to Carcassonne. While a little tougher than the previous day, this stage shouldn’t cause the GC men too much concern and most should be able to sit at the back of the bunch, recovering from their exploits on Mont Ventoux. The sprinters, on the other hand, will need to have their heads screwed on as they barrel towards Carcassonne. This is a long day in the saddle and many riders will smell a chance for a successful breakaway; if the sprinters and their teams give an escape group too much rope then it could go all the way.
