World Cup 2022: Day one in Qatar
The 22nd World Cup’s opening game really was not a football match, and not just because it was such an easy Ecuador win. What we actually watched was a political summit, a genuine geopolitical event. You only had to look at the most lucrative seats of all, rather than the swathes of empty ones as the hosts were beaten 2-0. There, Fifa president Gianni Infantino sat between the emir of Qatar and Saudi Arabian crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman. West Ham fans sing 'God Save the Queen' in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II
West Ham fans filled London Stadium stadium with song as they bellowed out "God Save the Queen" ahead of their clash with FC Steaua Bucharest. Supporters of the Premier League side banded together in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday (8 September) after Buckingham Palace announced that she had died peacefully aged 96. A statement made earlier that day said that while she was under medical supervision, Elizabeth II was "comfortable" at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. West Ham won 3-1 to claim victory in the Europa Conference League opening game. Commonwealth Games: Matt Walls involved in major crash at track cycling
England’s Matt Walls came off his bike as he crashed during a Commonwealth Games track cycling race on Sunday, 31 July. Walls was hospitalised, and the Isle of Man’s Matt Bostock was taken away on a stretcher after the crash which caused a pile-up of riders at the Lee Valley VeloPark. Some pictures from the race capture the moment the riders collided, met with shocked gasps form the audience in Birmingham. The incident took place during the men’s scratch race second heat in qualifying on day three of the games.
