If the Portland State women's basketball team could Frankenstein parts of its past three games together, the Vikings would certainly have one, maybe two wins. But that's not how basketball works – as much as Dr. Frankenstein might want it to – and so the Vikings continue their search for a complete game this Thursday at 6 p.m. when they host Northern Colorado at Viking Pavilion. The Vikings led in the fourth quarter of their games at Southern Utah on Thursday and at home against Northern Arizona Saturday, and led by as many as 11 points early in Monday's rematch against Southern Utah at Viking Pavilion.
Portland State's 2022 Big Sky Conference schedule really revs up this week as the Vikings begin a stretch of four straight games at home in eight days while continuing a 10-game in 22-days run. The compacted schedule is thanks to re-scheduled contests based on earlier COVID-related postponements. However, the Vikings can take comfort in the fact that six of the next eight overall are home games. PSU (4-9, 2-3) started their frenetic mid-season romp through league play on Saturday with a win at Sacramento State (67-62), then moved on to defending Big Sky-regular season champion Southern Utah on Monday. The Vikings lost that one, 86-76, after a highly competitive first 35 minutes that had them within a point of the lead. The challenge continues on Thursday when the Vikings host Montana (11-6, 4-2) at Viking Pavilion, followed by Montana State (12-5, 4-2) on Saturday, then Idaho (3-13, 0-6) on Monday. The fourth home game is a return engagement with Southern Utah (10-5, 4-1) at The Ship on Thursday, January 27.
Portland State head women's basketball coach Chelsey Gregg put it best after the Vikings' tough Big Sky opening weekend against Idaho State and Weber State last weekend. "Each game is going to be a learning experience and as long as we take that away from it and continue to work hard during the week – and they stay with it and remain bought in – we'll be alright," she said. The first chance for the Vikings to show that they're still bought in comes this weekend, as the Vikings host a pair of West Coast Conference teams in Pepperdine and cross-town rival University of Portland. The Vikings open the weekend against Pepperdine Friday at 6 p.m., with the Waves representing another challenge for this young team.
Fifth-ranked Eastern Washington took advantage of a pair of second-half turnovers by Portland State, leading them to 28 straight points and an eventual 42-28 over the Vikings at Hillsboro Stadium.
After winning three in a row, Vikings fall to 12th-ranked Hornets, 49-20.
A late November run was dashed by Sacramento State last week, but the Portland State Vikings still have plenty to play for this Saturday when they host 5th-ranked Eastern Washington. The Vikings and the Eagles will meet in a Big Sky Conference finale at Hillsboro Stadium. Kickoff is 2:05 p.m. and the game can be seen on ESPN+. PSU (5-5, 4-3) was on pace to contend for an FCS playoff berth until the 12th-ranked Hornets beat them 49-20 last Saturday in Sacramento. The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Vikings and eliminated their chances to get to seven wins and six Big Sky wins. The Vikings still have a lot on the line this Saturday against the Eagles. A win would put them at 6-5 overall, 5-3 in the Big Sky. Both marks would be the best by a Viking team in the last five seasons. A win over rival Eastern Washington would also be a treat as PSU has lost four straight to the Eagles. It would be a second win over a nationally-ranked team this season, and would even the the all-time series between the schools.
Vikings knocked off #24 Weber State for their third straight win, 30-18.
Vikings put up a season-high of 42 points with four forced turnovers in their win over Cal Poly.
