Mohammed Muntari scored the lone goal in the 12th minute. As the FIFA World Cup 2022 host nation, Qatar has already qualified for the tournament but is taking part in the qualifiers to get match practice in the lead up to the next year’s competition. After the Luxembourg match, the Asian champions will play Azerbaijan (27 March) and Republic of Ireland (30 March) respectively. Qatar will play their ‘home’ fixtures on European soil to facilitate shorter travel times for their group opponents. UEFA Euro 2016 winners Portugal, Serbia are the other teams in the group. The European Football Association (UEFA) invited QFA to participate in the first European qualifiers for the 2022 event, in a move that reflects Doha’s position on the international sporting scene.

Baghdad Bounedjah scored the first goal for Sadd in the third minute before Aron Gunnarsson equalised for Arabi in the 23rd. However, Baghdad helped The Wolves annex their 17th title in the competition with an opportunistic effort in the 44th minute. The venue, which retained its old name Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium, is situated in one of Qatar’s most historic cities. Sheikh Ahmad Bin Ali Al Thani was the fifth ruler of Qatar, and the first Qatari ruler to bear the title Amir. Sheikh Ahmad was born around 1920 in Doha and became Emir on October 24, 1960 upon the abdication of his father. The Amir Cup final, which was held on Qatar National Day, was attended by Qatar Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. FIFA president Gianni Infantino, UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin, and AFC president Shaikh Salman Bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa were present at the venue which will host seven FIFA World Cup matches from the group stages until the quarterfinals. The venue, home to Al Rayyan Club, before its demolition in 2015 is within walking distance of Al Riffa Station on Doha Metro’s Green Line.

Abdulaziz Hatem opened the scoring before Akram Afif and Almoez Ali added two goals each as the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts took all three points in 2020’s first and only Asian Qualifiers fixture. Asia’s first competitive international match since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the clash was attended by 1,044 socially-distanced fans. A meeting between the Asian champions and a Bangladesh side boasting just one point from their previous four Asian Qualifiers match was also going to be a tough assignment for the South Asian side, and it took just four minutes for the alarm bells to start ringing as Qatar’s Ahmed Alaaeldin hit the post with an early headed attempt.
