We're glad to welcome Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel, who's @therealBeede on Twitter, and welcome back Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle who's @Joseph_Duarte on Twitter. They're here for a special Big 12 expansion edition with Trib sportswriters Brice Cherry and John Werner: • So, the word is that UCF, Houston and Cincinnati are slated to join the league “no later than 2024-25.” But what are the odds that those three are able to wiggle out of the American Athletic Conference prior to that? • With the addition of BYU, this conference will now have teams spread across three time zones. Do you envision some geographical challenges to the new Big 12? Or does that matter in today’s college sports landscape? • There are some obvious reasons why BYU, Cincy, UCF and Houston would want to join the Big 12 – money, exposure, recruiting. For the schools that you cover, UCF and Houston, what’s the biggest appeal, in your view? • Got a good laugh out of a recent tweet touting “Big 12 legend Oscar Robertson,” referring of course to the Hall of Fame basketball great at Cincinnati. In all seriousness, all of these programs have a rich athletic history that predates their arrival in the Big 12. If you were creating a Mount Rushmore for UH (Joseph), UCF (Jason) and Baylor (John), who would be the four people you’d put up there? ----- Read Baylor football coverage at wacotrib.com/sports/college/baylor and follow @WacoTribSports on Twitter. ----- SUBSCRIBE to One True Podcast on: Apple - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/one-true-podcast-baylor-big-12-football/id1530454062 Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/2kWVGhL8Z8TwpGA9Tj6AsY?si=_omEphQjTjy_1VRwDDlmDQ Google: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cub21ueWNvbnRlbnQuY29tL2QvcGxheWxpc3QvMDJlM2JiYjAtOWU4Ny00ODMyLWIyOTctYWFiOTAxMTY4ZjkzL2Q0OGU1OTM0LTc3MGEtNDM1Yi05ODc5LWFjMDEwMGUyMmFjYi8yOGM5MzMwZC0xNmJhLTRhN2UtOGJhYi1hYzAxMDBlMjkwNWQvcG9kY2FzdC5yc3M%3d
"We've got a tough group of guys. And I think we knew that, but it's definitely awesome to go test yourself and put that on display and see that for real, under the lights, and go and put that on display on a national stage ... just so proud of our guys. On Breece Hall: "I think Breece gets a lot of media attention for the player that he is — he is a great player — but I've been more impressed with the person that he is."
When it comes to Baylor’s penalty problems, Dave Aranda takes that stuff personally. Aranda said the Baylor coaches reviewed the film from the Texas State game, and took particular note of the penalties. Some were pre-snap flags, others occurred during the course of the play. All are teaching moments, he said. Nobody was more excited than Baylor coach Scott Drew when he heard No. 15-seeded Oral Roberts stunned No. 2 Ohio State, 75-72, on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. ORU head coach Paul Mills served on Drew’s staff from 2013-17 and guided the Golden Eagles to the Summit League tournament championship to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Later Friday night, Drew got even more good news when former assistant Grant McCasland’s No. 13-seeded North Texas squad upset No. 4 Purdue, 78-69, in overtime. The No. 1 seed Baylor Bears look ahead to playing their No. 9 Wisconsin in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at 1:40 p.m. Sunday at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. It will be televised on CBS.
Trying to reach its first Final Four since 1950, Baylor will have to plow through a stacked South region to get there. The Bears earned their first No. 1 seed in program history as they’ll face No. 16-seeded Hartford in Friday’s NCAA tournament opener at 2:30 p.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis in a game that will be televised on truTV. “I think that’s one thing about the NCAA tournament, no matter what region you’re in, there’s going to be a lot of good and talented teams with a lot of history, tradition,” Scott Drew said. “So it’s one of those things in March everybody loves because it’s a 40-minute game. Anybody can win in that 40 minutes. It’s not a best of seven. You better bring it.” Read more: https://wacotrib.com/sports/college/baylor/baylor-men-seek-defensive-improvement-in-tough-south-ncaa-region/article_6dd89b64-86a0-11eb-b5b0-5f93d123a74e.html
