The Houston Cougars men's basketball team improved to 11-2 Wednesday night with an 80-47 home win over the Texas State Bobcats. Josh finished the game with 20 points (10/13 fgs) and 5 rebounds. Marcus scored 13 (4/9 3s, 1/2 fts). Kyler Edwards scored 14 (5/9 fgs - 4/7 3s). Jamal Shead finished the game with 12 points and 10 assists. Houston scored 1.404 points per possession in the win. Head Coach Kelvin Sampson, center Josh Carlton, and guard Marcus Sasser talk with the media after the win. Coach Sampson gives an update on Kyler Edwards' injury as well as discusses the points of emphasis the team had for the game: reduce turnovers, better job on the defensive boards, and better job on transition defense. Coach Sampson discusses his conversations with Josh about coming to Houston. Josh comments on why he decided to transfer to Houston. Marcus discusses the impact Josh's low post presence on offense has for the guards on the perimeter.

"IT WAS GOALTENDING" Those words were Kelvin Sampson's response to the first question of Saturday night's postgame press conference about the final play in Houston's 83-82 road loss at Alabama. Coach Sampson adds more comments about the play; and, he also comments on two good teams competed in the game. Coach discusses J'Wan Roberts 9 offensive rebounds and refuses to dwell on J'Wan's misses at the free throw line because J'Wan didn't miss them on purpose and J'Wan and his teammates work on free throws every practice. The amount of fouls called on Houston disrupted Houston's ability to be physical on defense -- especially in the first half when Alabama shot 17 for 20 from the line. Bama was 7 for 11 from the line in the 2nd half. Alabama made 26 of 50 fgs and 24 of 31 fts. Marcus Sasser scored a game-high 25 points (8 for 25 fgs - 4 for 14 threes) to lead Houston. Houston had a 23-8 edge in 2nd chance points.

Coach discusses the hard work of his players is paying off with wins. Coach Silas mentions D.J. Augustin's solid performance against the Nets. 7 straight wins for the Rockets Rockets are now 8-16. Houston has scored 110+ points in each of the past four games after doing so five times prior this season. The Rockets have shot 47.0% or better in six of the past seven games, including four straight, after doing so twice prior this season. The last time Houston shot 47.0% or better in four straight games was from 2/20-2/26/20. The 49.4% shooting was the second-highest percentage by a Nets opponent this season.

Marcus Sasser scored 23 of his game-high 26 points in the first half of tonight's blowout victory. Sasser shot 7/14 from 3 in the game. Tramon Mark scored 12 points (5/9 fgs - 2/5 3s) and added 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the game. Marcus and Tramon begin the press conference answering a question about teammate Taze Moore's tremendous leaping ability. Coach Sampson comments on Houston's job against Northwestern State's zone defense in the game; seeing former players Galen Robinson Jr and Corey Davis Jr at the game and being acknowledged at center court during a timeout. Coach Sampson also discusses the family atmosphere of the UH basketball program as well as receiving text messages from former players throughout his coaching career -- going back to his days as head coach at Montana Tech in 1982. Tramon mentions his left shoulder is healing; and, he mentions he's making steady progress on the court returning his game to pre-injury. Marcus comments on the on-court chemistry he's developing with backcourt mate Jamal Shead and also focusing on the UH culture rather than the competition from the opponent.

Houston Cougars Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and guard Kyler Edwards speak with the media after the Coogs lost to Wisconsin 65-63 in a semifinal game of the 2021 Maui Invitational. Wisconsin led Houston 40-20. Edwards scored 9 points during a 10-0 Houston run in the first 4 minutes of the second half. Edwards scored a team-high 18 points for Houston. Houston tailed 65-63 with seconds remaining; and, after securing a defensive rebound, advancing the ball up the court, failed to get off a shot attempt as the clock expired. Wisconsin's Johnny Davis scored a career-high 30 points.
