With the loss, Houston is 20-3 overall and 9-1 in #AmericanHoops. SMU improves to 17-5 and 8-2. Coach Sampson comments on -- due to the lack of depth in the backcourt -- the difficulty Houston has when their starting guards get into early foul trouble. Houston's Kyler Edwards picked up his 4th foul with 12:05 remaining and Houston ahead 68-55. Edwards went to the bench. SMU scored 9 consecutive points with Edwards on the bench. Coach Sampson is not sad about the loss. He's proud of his team's effort. He mentions he thought his guards were passive against SMU's 1-3-1 defense. Overall, Coach Sampson is disappointed Houston lost; but, considering Houston's limited depth in the backcourt, Coach Sampson says a 20-3 overall record and 9-1 in conference is still very good for his Houston team. After shooting 7 for 11 threes in the first half, Houston made 1 of 8 threes in the second half.

Coach Sampson comments on grad forward Fabian White's 109th win in UH men's hoops history which ties Michael Young for most at UH. He also discusses Houston's veteran leadership being a key to playing well on the road and also locking in and focusing on the game plan against Cincinnati. Coach Sampson reminds everyone Houston's margin for error is slim because of the lack of depth in the backcourt. The team will continue working to get better each game. Houston's next game is at SMU, Wednesday, February 9, at 6 pm CT on ESPN2. Coach Sampson's mentions SMU is now the focus of him, the coaching staff, and the players.

Houston Cougars Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and forward Fabian White speak with the media after the Coogs' 66-61 road win over the Temple Owls. Both teams were short-handed due to injuries and were coming out of health and safety protocols because of COVID. Coach Sampson said today's win was Houston's best win of the season because of the effort the 7 Houston players who played gave throughout the game. Point guard Jamal Shead played the entire game. Shead got fatigued in the second half which caused a few of his turnovers; but, he was in the right spot defensively to get a charging call on Temple to erase a game-tying three-pointer in the closing minutes of the game. Shead finished the game with 14 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 turnovers. Fabian White scored 15 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in 38 minutes. Freshman guard Ramon Walker scored 13 points in 37 minutes. Walker made 3 of Houston's 4 three-point baskets -- including a clutch 3 to put Houston up (62-57) in the closing minutes. In his first game back in about 2 weeks (COVID), Taze Moore scored 10 points in 38 minutes.
