Many thanks to everyone who attended and made this event our largest and most successful in it's short four year history. The 2022 Charlie Fouche Shootout, held on February 26, 2022, featured ten first-time attendees. First-time attendee, Tim Rounds and his 1969 Oakland Athletics, breezed through the round-robin matchups with a 9-1 record. Mike Kehrer, with the 1978 Boston Red Sox, also finished at 9-1. Frank Fumai (1970 New York Yankees) and Jody Huneycutt (1974 Cincinnati Reds) finished with 8-2 records. Frank and Jody waited for first-time attendees Bill Tabor (1977 Pittsburgh Pirates) and Pete Simonelli (1969 St Louis Cardinals) to complete their final matchups after going 6-2 in the first four rounds. The potential for a four-way tie and chaos to get down to the final two playoff spots was very exciting. We always hope for chaos in APBA Tournaments because we try to plan for all possibilities and fail miserably. Pete lost to Cullen Huneycutt (1974 Atlanta Braves) in his 9th game and Bill lasted until his 10th game before losing to David Dawn (1976 Oakland Athletics). In the 3rd round matchup, Bill Tabor rode the arm of '77 Pirates' John Candelaria to a perfect game over Cullen Huneycutt and his 1974 Braves. The playoffs began with cards being drawn from a hat to decide the matchups. Cullen drew Pete Rose ('74 Reds) and Liam Huneycutt drew Joe Rudi ('69 Athletics) for the first matchup while Mike Kehrer ('78 Red Sox) faced Frank Fumai (1970 Yankees). Jody Huneycutt and the '74 Reds upset Tim Rounds and his '69 A's while Mike Kehrer ('78 Red Sox) made quick work of the 1970 Yankees managed by 2020 Shootout Champion Frank Fumai. In the Championship finals, Jody took game one and Mike took the second game to set up a winner take all Game Three. Four-time attendee Jody Huneycutt's 1974 Cincinnati Reds jumped out to an early lead then coasted to a 6-2 victory and the 2022 Charlie Fouche APBA Shootout Championship Over Mike Kehrer and the 1978 Boston Red Sox. Congrats are in order for Jody Huneycutt and all the attendees who made this the best and smoothest Shootout yet. Twelve attendees participated in the early-bird selections for next year's 2023 Charlie Fouche APBA Shootout to be held February 18, 2023. With an appeal to out-manage a manager in the Baseball Hall of Fame, the 2023 theme will be losing teams that were managed by members of the Hall of Fame. Kevin Burke used his R-Machine to tell us that 3755 such teams qualify for 2023 Charlie Fouche APBA Shootout. Maybe it isn't slim pickin's after all? Team selections for the 2023 Shootout will reopen at noon on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
