With Avery Bradley officially opting out of the remainder of the season, the Lakers suffer a big loss at the guard position. Especially on the defensive end. But as we hear the latest news, that none other than JR Smith is the most serious candidate to replace Bradley, I actually think it’s a great idea. Whaaat?! Ok let me explain. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. Ok first things first, Avery’s primary job was just being a pesky defender, constantly chasing opposing guards, and disrupting their offensive flow. And he’s very good at that. I’ve been in love with his defense and especially his overall effort ever since his days in Boston. Add in the fact that Bradley is capable of hitting the open 3, you have a nice player profile that perfectly complements Lebron’s needs. Then you have JR. He hasn’t played a game in a year and a half. Yeah, not this season, but he sat out the majority of last season as well. With 34 years, he’s really at the tail end of his career. And also, before you say it, here it is- we all know that Smith can forget the score at the end of a freaking finals game. So let’s actually start there. To be honest, I’ve always liked what JR can do on the court, so to summarize his game to a blunder like this, is like summarizing the career of a hall of famer, the pound for pound goat in my opinion Allen Iverson to that practice video. I feel like that’s what casual fans do. They don’t really watch the games closely, and instead, they just bring up clips that blow up on social media. So, let’s put that aside ok? Next, when talking about the Avery Bradley player profile, I don’t know if you remember but JR is actually a willing and serviceable defender. Is he elite? Maybe not, but in my opinion when it matters the most, he gives you effort and chases guys all over the court. On the other end tho? We already know how quick JR can catch fire. And that can provide a great floor spacing for the Lakers. You have to keep an eye on Smith to a degree much higher than Bradley. When you look at their shooting percentages, it’s somewhat similar, but again, we’ve seen the zone that JR can get in, and teams know that. So all in all, more room to operate for Lebron, AD and the rest. So you might say that this can make sense on paper but still, he hasn’t played in a long time, and is getting up there in age. Well, Richard Jefferson was an important piece on the Cavaliers team that won the title, and he was 35 at the time. So 1 year older back then. Also, with the NBA being on hold for so long, the timing works out perfectly for JR, because now everyone’s coming back lacking rhythm. And last and most important thing in this whole story is the fact that Smith has actually been working out and stayed ready during this whole time. If his conditioning and his rhythm are ok, I know that the jumpshot is in his back pocket ready to be unleashed. At the end I just like to quote Richard Jefferson who said: best behaviour JR is the best JR. And I completely agree with him. The Lakers are stacked right now. With a possibility to win a championship. All he needs to do is to chase guys on the perimeter, and occasionally hit the open 3. And even with a few mishaps throughout his career, I feel like he is going to be up to the task. Let me know what you think. Is this a good idea? Comment down below. The NBA is doing everything to ensure that the season returns and that the players can be as safe as possible in this tough situation, but also as entertained as possible-having in mind that some teams that go deep in the playoffs can spend 3 months in 1 place at Disney. So let’s go over the specifics. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. First things first: Players who don’t want to go there and play out the season, are allowed to do that without any penalties by the league. They only need to notify their respective teams until June 25th. So in less than a week, we’ll know exactly which players are going to play, and which not. Once they get there, the teams will have quite a few amenities to keep them occupied. Things like game rooms, bowling, golf courses, DJ sessions, as well as unreleased movie screenings, among many other things. As for safety- the number of people that will be on the campus is very limited. Every team can bring 35 people in total. 15-17 players and 18-20 staff members. They are encouraged to wear a "proximity alarm" that will notify them if they spend more than five seconds within 6 feet of another person on campus who is also wearing an alarm. Admittedly that can be a bit of a hassle, dealing with the beeping all the time. So since it’s not mandatory, I’m not sure just how many of them will opt to use this. However something that caught my attention is this smart ring that the league will provide to everyone who would like to wear it. Reportedly this ring can forecast and predict when players begin to experience symptoms up to three days in advance. Players will have full access to the data collected on them as well, which will be studied by scientists at the University of Michigan to monitor for symptoms. I like the idea of having it as an added layer of safety but again this is also optional so players can choose if they wear it or not. I highly recommend it tho, cause for a lot of players that’s gonna be the only ring that they’ll get when it comes to basketball. Btw, apparently this ring is available to the public so anyone can buy it. The prices range from 300 to 400 dollars depending on the model. Getting back to the NBA however, the teams will actually be allowed to attend other games, so that’s going to be interesting to see them watching and scouting their opponents live. And they can leave Disney with permission from the league during extreme situations like the birth of a child, or an illness to a relative...you get the point. So I guess the only thing left is to wait and see how the rosters are going to look like and if there’s gonna be any high profile player that will decide to skip this once in a lifetime experience. NBA is the home of countless strange and bizarre moments that sometimes get lost and forgotten. Like the time when the Nuggets mascot passed out during his pregame show. Look at how awkward this looks, as his motionless frame is being brought down. Luckily it wasn’t anything serious and the person inside the costume was ok. Stick around I’ve got a lot more weird NBA moments. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. Look at Kosta Koufos contemplating life and rethinking his decisions that brought him in this situation. The sight looks highly unintelligent to be honest and I wouldn’t want to be caught like him or like Alonzo Morning. You’ve probably seen this as a meme online. Hey, check out this legendary comment where the Celtics announcer explained how gifted Aaron Baynes is down low in the men’s region. I believe I’ve mentioned this in an older video but it still is one of the wildest situations to happen on an NBA court. Carmelo hit his head and lost consciousness. But I guess everyone kinda thought that he’s acting up and continued playing. The most absurd thing by far in this situation is the fact that when J.R.Smith gets the ball everyone on the Nuggets stop expecting a time out to be called. Instead, in typical JR fashion, he goes 1 on 5 against the Thunder, literally stepping inches away from Carmelo who just laid motionless on the court. Eventually the medical team gets to Melo and fortunately he didn’t suffer any serious injury. Now here is a moment that caused a lot of debates. During his time with the Cavs, Ty Lue was caught having a strange piece fall out of his mouth. The jokes on twitter were that he is a robot and he’s starting to break down and that metal parts were coming off loose. But the thing is that it was one of these. Just a mint. Lakers fans, let me know if you remember this moment. Game on the line Josh Hart goes up for the win, and the producer I guess mistakenly presses the commercial button right at the deciding moment. If I was a Laker fan I would be so mad at this. Especially if he made it of course. OK this next one is ridiculous. In 2017 after breaking his probation, Kentavious Caldewell Pope was sentenced to 25 days in jail. However he was still allowed to come out of prison for games and practices with the Lakers. This was only the case for home games tho, as KCP couldn’t get out of the state of California. So he ended up missing games 2 on the road during that period. This is still fresh from this season but it sure was 1 insane turn of events. James Harden goes up for the dunk, and actually throws it down, but you can see that the ball came out of the net in a strange way. So the refs kinda thought that he missed it. And after a lot of back and forth- they didn’t count the basket. So it would not have been a big deal with a 13 point lead in the fourth, but the Spurs actually came back after that and won by 1. Isn’t that the most ironic thing ever. Ok have a look at possibly the most insane sequence ever. During 1 of those time out fan interactions, these 2 girls played the most epic game of tic tac toe. I’m not gonna say anything else, just watch this. And finally here are some fans that were obviously very impressed by Lou Will and would love to have a piece out of that cake. I had a lot of fun making this video so let me know if I should do a part 2. Subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.
New format explained: https://youtu.be/BPnTfHyOnoE Even tho all the latest news has us questioning the return of the NBA season, I am still optimistic and wanted to talk about a few X-factors that will be crucial in the playoffs. The format where all the teams are going to be playing in 1 place without an audience and after such a big break can be a blessing for some teams like the Clippers, and a curse for others like the Sixers. So let’s check out both sides. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. First, let’s talk about home court advantage. The biggest beneficiary in this whole wild scenario are the Los Angeles Clippers in my opinion. Think about it. In a possible Western Conference Finals against the Lakers, this would have been a series where every game would be a home game for the Lakers. As you may have noticed throughout the season during their 3 matchups so far, you could see that Staples Center was rocking in support for Lebron, Anthony Davis and company even tho in 2 of those battles, the Clippers were listed as the home team. However now, in this situation playing on a neutral court in a quiet surrounding, the sixth man is gone for the Lakers and I feel like this could be a nice little unintentional help for the all time second NBA team from LA. On the other hand you have the Bucks and the Sixers. Milwaukee would have definitely benefited from a potential home court advantage. As the team with the best record in the league, they would have had 1 more game at home throughout the entire playoffs, and that would have come in clutch in a potential finals matchup against the 2 teams I just talked about. This way however, Giannis and his teammates are still the heavy favorites to come out of the east, but they miss out on a nice opportunity due to this unfortunate situation that we’re in. And before I move on from this topic, let me highlight the biggest loser in these circumstances, the Philadelphia 76ers. Do you guys remember or even know that their record at home this season is 29-2. They’ve been virtually unbeatable. But to be only 6th place in the East with this type of record at home, must mean that they play horrible on the road. And that’s absolutely the case. The Sixers are 10-24 in games where they don’t have the home crowd support, so you wouldn’t be wrong for thinking that this is going to be a tough road for them to go through in the playoffs. Moving on. I’d like to point out the biggest winners in terms of physical transformations during this quarantine period. First we saw images of James Harden looking significantly slimmer, saying that he’s been working on his cardio a lot and dieting. So knowing how explosive and unstoppable he’s been with all that extra weight on him, I can only imagine how scary he’ll be off the dribble. But as surprising as Harden’s transformation looked, seeing Nikola Jokic looking like Porzingis and fitting in skinny jeans was absolutely stunning. Personally I’m impressed at the amount of change his body has gone through. First he came into training camp this season being severely overweight, to now looking like this in just a few months. Although I do give him props for losing all the weight, I’m not sure how that would translate on the court. He could be more mobile, but at the same time, that wasn’t a big part of Nikola’s game. Rather the bumping and banging under the basket. And it’s going to be a lot more difficult to do that now. So it remains to be seen how he modifies his playing style and how far can Jokic take the Nuggets in the playoffs. And lastly, teams like the Pacers for example I’m sure are happy that they could give their franchise player some more time to recover from his injury. Victor Oladipo came back in January after the knee injury he suffered last season but admittedly he didn’t look good at all, lacking rhythm-as you can see from his shooting percentages right here. He also sat out games in the middle of all that, due to some minor troubles that the knee was giving him. So let’s see how Oladipo looks on the court with the extended rest that he’s had. I also mentioned in a previous video that the Blazers are fortunate to get both Nurkic and Collins back and the team is going to be at full strength as they try to make a run for the playoffs in this new format that I fully explain in detail. I’ll link the video in the description. All in all we can talk about winners and losers and who benefits, who doesn’t but the fact is that this is an entirely new and unseen territory and things are going to be the same for every team, so let’s see who makes the most out of it and who comes out on top. That’s it for now, if you liked this video, subscribe and hit the notification bell so that you don’t miss my future in depth analysis. Talk to you in the next one. Peace out.
You know what a fast break looks like. Steal, sprint finish. Well Kyle Anderson is the goat when it comes to slow breaks. His specialty is finishing at a leisurely pace, nice and easy, almost looking like he’s sleepwalking. There’s a good reason why his teammates call him SlowMo. Let me show you. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. If you compare Westbrook to a Ferrari, then Kyle is probably...a tricycle. And no disrespect whatsoever to tricycles but especially to Anderson. I absolutely love how he almost hypnotizes his opponents and manages to go by them. Part of his secret I feel is the fact that players aren’t really used to this speed. Everything happens ultra fast in the NBA so it’s like their reflexes are too quick for Anderson’s moves. Look at this for example. Slow and steady dribble dribble, jump stop pump fake pump fake, scooore. You can’t guard this. You know how when a player goes for a layup, there’s a 1-2 rhythm so the defender anticipates that when going for a block. But here with this movement, there’s no way of doing that. And look at this. He moves so slow that the referees even missed a travel on him. Anderson is like the reverse James Harden. I mean, this is a travel right? I don’t even know, he does a similar thing here as well. I’m as clueless as the refs to be honest. I can’t even analyze this herky jerky movement on screen, let alone defend it. Right here he puts the entire Cavalier team to sleep in transition as he walks his way to a layup. As he goes to save the ball right here, he even falls in slow motion and that gives him more than enough time to find his teammate with a perfect lob. I am almost convinced that being slow is actually an advantage on the court. So since I mentioned Westbrook. You know how he only has 1 speed. He only goes 100 miles an hour and often makes mistakes like this. If he could only spend a summer working out with SlowMo, man he would be unstoppable. All jokes aside tho, Kyle Anderson is a very crafty and smart role player. And we’ll have a chance to see him once the season returns as the Memphis Grizzlies will try to hang onto the last playoff spot. Hopefully this fun video is a nice boost while waiting for the NBA to come back. That’s it for now. Confidence is one thing, but shooting free throws with your eyes closed is flat out showing off and being cocky. That’s saying to the opponent I’m better than you and there’s nothing you can do about it. So let me show you a few iconic moments. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. Possibly the most obvious example in today’s NBA is the run back on defense by Steph Curry after he shoots a three. This type of move has to be demoralizing for any team. Steph simply lets them know that he’s the best shooter on the court and that he can make any shot he wants. However, some of you younger guys may not remember or even know that Curry is not the first to do this. The originator is actually one of my all time favorite players, Gilbert Arenas. As you can see he does it on a game winner which makes it that much more special. And speaking of Agent Zero one time he made a $20 000 bet with Deshawn Stevenson, that he can make more 1 handed threes than his teammate could make by shooting regularly. And as wild as that sounds, Gilbert would go on to make 73 out of 100 shots from downtown. Look, I know that good NBA shooters can get to 90+ in practice, but to make 73 with one hand is absolutely crazy to me. So, with the entire team watching, Stevenson couldn’t get to this number and left the court completely embarrassed. So that’s the type of character that Gilbert Arenas was in his prime. And while we’re talking about betting big money, one time in a tight game, Gerald Wallace tried to trash talk Kobe and break his concentration before an important free throw. And the mamba just told him how much you wanna put? I’ll put 500 grand? And then calmly knocked down a shot worth half a million. Of course this one wasn’t a real bet but Kobe’s greatness and his supreme confidence was more than real. Larry Bird, a legendary trash talker who could back it up, during the 1988 3 point contest famously walked in the locker room and asked the shooters: Who’s coming in second? And on the final ball as he needed it for the win, Bird just shot it and raised his hand showing the entire arena that he knew all along he was going to win it. Check this out how insane this guy was. I’m just trying to understand the mindset of remembering in the middle of the game with all the action going on that “oh right I need to shoot this one with my left hand.” Bird ended up making 10 of his 21 field goals that way. He ended up with 47 points and of course the win. And lastly before we move on from him, I gotta show you this. I hope that you now have a better understanding of just how cold blooded Larry Bird was. And here’s Paul Pierce doing a similar thing. As you can see it got heated and even the ref had to step in to calm them down. But as they say Pierce could talk the talk and walk the walk, as he buried a three right in Al Harrington’s face. Great sequence right here And since we started with MJ, let’s end it the same way. So here is a great story by Steve Smith about playing against Michael Jordan and his cockiness on the court. I tried that one time playing basketball. I said 38, 36...and I never scored again for the rest of the game. So that’s the end for the story. Naah I’m playing I just wanted to tell that joke. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heatchecknba/ Down by 2, the Charlotte Hornets will turn to one of the deadliest 3 point shooters this season that almost no one knows about. Devonte Graham. The play is for him to get a head of steam, fakes right on the handoff, the defender reacts, he cuts left, has an open look for 3 and knocks down the dagger. This was the 9th 3 pointer for Graham in this game, showing everyone that you need to know his name. And I’m gonna introduce him to you. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check, let’s get into it. Devonte Graham is third in the NBA at the moment in 3 point makes. That sure is a staggering fact considering that this is a guy who we didn’t know about till now. He sure came out of nowhere if you take a look at the enormous jump that he’s made since his rookie year. Last season he played only 46 games for the Hornets and had 4.7 points per game. He spent the other half playing in the G-League. But this year he is the leader in both points and assists for the Hornets while coming off the bench. That’s crazy! So the coach was kinda forced to put him in the starting lineup with numbers like these. And speaking of the coach, James Borego has given Graham the ultimate neon green light for him to shoot whenever he wants. That’s why you can see heat checks like these from waaay downtown. What’s really interesting is the fact that Devonte’s range allows the team to not have to run a ton of stuff for him. The primary way of getting him a look is this high pick and roll that he loves, and every time that the defender goes under, he let’s it fly. Look where he launches from here. This is something that guys like Steph Curry or Damian Lillard are usually doing. But the fact that he isn’t really on the scouting report for teams yet, allows for Devonte to have so much space on the screen and a lot of time for him to gather and go up on the shot. If you give a good shooter this much time and space, he’ll definitely knock it down most of the time. And for now, he exclusively operates in this middle area right here as you can see. With only 1 for 2 and 1 for 3 from the corners. With his 41 and a half percent from 3, Graham has been one of the main reasons that the Hornets are staying afloat in the East. I mean 6-7 for the 7th place in the East is nothing to be proud of, but almost everyone, including yours truly-expected them to be dead last, so this is very positive. It remains to be seen how well can he keep shooting once he gets at the top on opposing scouting reports, and how the Hornets find creative ways to get him open so that he can keep his hot shooting. And we just saw one in this game against the Knicks, which secured the win for Charlotte. The NBA might have it’s new baby faced assassin. Everyone, make sure you keep an eye on Devonte Graham. That’s it for now, follow me on instagram for more stats and scribbles, and if you liked this video subscribe and hit the notification bell so that you don’t miss my future in depth analysis. https://www.instagram.com/heatchecknba/ Lebron James admitted 1 thing to Luka Doncic after their deathmatch, and that is…: But it was the King who got the victory with the help of a genius play call that took it into overtime, that I will break down for everyone. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it. To understand what happened at the end, we need to backtrack a little and see how the game developed. Trust me it will all make sense in 1 minute. First of all, One of the reasons why James told Doncic what he told, is this- he absolutely dominated the Lakers off the Pick and Roll. Right off the start, Luka gets the screen, keeps the dribble and attacks Mcgee, giving enough time to Powell to roll and the easy dunk on the first play. When the Lakers adjusted and rotated down low as you see Kuzma right here, look at this quarterback vision and passing skills by Doncic to deliver a pass right on the money for the open 3. This is some Jason Kidd stuff right here done by a sophomore. Again, in crunch time, he doesn’t panic, stays patient as he receives the screen and look at this slow attack before the lob, just in time for Powell to catch and finish. Crazy control of the pace. Oh, and if you don’t wanna switch and help out on the screen, you know that this is what’s going to happen. Doncic finished with a triple double of 31/13 and 15. Monster numbers! But getting back to the game, all of this that I showed before, is why Dalas got the lead with 30 seconds to go. As Powel sets the screen and rolls, all that Luka has to do is a little pass fake, and causes Davis to react opening up the opportunity for a blow by and a layup. So as he goes inside, the entire LA lineup closes down the lane for him, leaving a wide open shooter in the corner, and Dorian Finney Smith hits this clutch 3 pointer giving the Mavs the lead. All this plus a missed free throw at the end, kept the door open at 3 point deficit and finally set up the play that saved the Lakers in this game. So here’s the thing: Lebron was outmuscling and outrunning the Mavs throughout the entire game, on his way to his own triple double. 39/12 and 16 unreal numbers for the king. It was pretty simple. Blowing past big guys with his speed like he does right here. And barreling his way to the rim whenever he had a quicker but smaller guy on him as you can see right here. So on that final play Dalas was right to be focused on him. But it was a bit too much. As he gets the ball and starts his drive, there are less than 4 seconds on the clock, probably about 2 by the time he lays it in. So with no time outs left for the Lakers, why are the Mavs afraid of these 2 points? Check this out: Maxi Kleber rotates to help, and meanwhile, Howard sets a screen, and in this situation gets away with a blatant and horrible foul, which gives Danny Green an open look in the corner. The more basketball savy viewers already recognize this play called a Hammer, which Popovich ran it a lot for Danny Green himself in San Antonio. It’s a misdirection play for the shooter to receive a screen in the corner as the defense is focusing on the strong side. I love these genius little tricks by the coaches at the end of games, which obviously can produce brilliant results. But again, I have to stress the foul that went uncalled here in this situation and cost Dalas the game. In OT, the dynamic duo of Lebron and AD was too much to handle, as the Lakers were able to come up with the victory at the end, but great effort and great start overall by Luka Doncic and the Mavs overall who I really need to do a dedicated video on, to break down their strong start this season.
