Michigan State left no doubt Thursday night in the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl. The No.16 Spartans scored five straight touchdowns in the second and third quarters on the way to a dominant 42-17 win over No. 18 Washington State. With the victory, Michigan State reached the 10-win barrier for the eighth time in program history and the sixth time under head coach Mark Dantonio. And, in the last game of his 11th season in East Lansing, Dantonio recorded his 100th win as MSU's head coach. Led by quarterback Brian Lewerke's arm and legs, Michigan State scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 21-3 halftime lead. The Spartans tacked on another touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, and they scored again to go up 35-3 after recovering a fumble on Washington State's first possession of the third quarter. The Cougars, playing without starting quarterback Luke Falk because of injury, finally found the end zone late in the third quarter and added another score midway through the fourth, but LJ Scott thwarted any hopes of a comeback with a 28-yard touchdown with six minutes to play. Lewerke threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns on 13-for-21 passing and added another 73 yards rushing on 14 attempts. He left the game after taking a big hit during the third quarter but came back to hold for the extra point after Damion Terry finished the drive with a touchdown. Lewerke was back on the field at QB for MSU's next drive and finished the game after Terry later threw an interception. Felton Davis III caught four passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, while Cody White scored touchdowns on two of his three receptions. Lewerke led Michigan State in rushing until Scott's second touchdown run game him 110 yards on 18 carries (6. 1ypc).MSU came up empty on its first two possessions Thursday, punting on the first and turning it over on downs on the second. Meanwhile, after Washington State went three-and-out on its first drive, Cougars QB Tyler Hilinski dinked and dunked his way down the field on a 14-play drive that started inside the WSU 10-yard line and ended with a 45-yard field goal. Following a second Washington State three-and-out, though, Michigan State took over possession at its own 19-yard line with less than two minutes to play in the first quarter. The Spartans held the ball for the next 9:24 until Lewerke scrambled on 3rd-and-9 from the Cougars 15-yard line and eventually found White in the back of the end zone to put Michigan State on the board. MSU's next drive took less than a quarter of the time but also ended with a touchdown, as Lewerke's early success running the ball led to Davis being wide open for a 49-yard touchdown on a play-action pass. The Spartans then capped their huge second quarter with a three-yard run by Scott after a third straight three-and-out from Washington State. Michigan State outgained WSU 206-27 in the second quarter while running 26 offensive plays to Washington State's eight. The Sp
Kenny Hill passed for two touchdowns, ran for another and even caught one as No.13 TCU rallied from a big early deficit to beat 15th-ranked Stanford 39-37 in the Alamo Bowl on Thursday night. Cole Bunce’s 33-yard field goal with just over 3 minutes to play won it for the Horned Frogs (11-3), who trailed 21-3 before storming back behind big plays from Hill and a 76-yard punt return from Desmon White. TCU rallied from 31 down in to beat Oregon in the 2015 Alamo Bowl.Stanford (9-5) running back Bryce Love, a Heisman Trophy finalist, rushed for 145 yards and had a 69-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. K.J.Costello had three touchdown passes to J.J.Arcega-Whiteside, the last one giving Stanford a 37-36 lead. Hill then drove TCU to Bunce’s game winner. The Horned Frogs defense sealed it with an interception by Innis Gaines with 2:01 left. Hill finished with 314 yards passing, a team-high 60 yards rushing and caught a 27-yard TD pass from White in his final game. Love finished with the season with 2,118 yards rushing, the school’s single-season record. TCU: The Horned Frogs defended Love about as well as anyone this season despite the long touchdown run. Most important, they didn’t let him take over the game in the second half, which let Hill and the offense rally. When the running game wasn’t working, the TCU defense could get after Costello, who struggled under pressure after his quick start. Stanford: The Cardinal were doomed by the big play just when they had a chance to put the game away. After pinning TCU deep, Hill connected with Jalen Reagor on a 93-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. White, who earlier had a costly fumble, then gave TCU its first lead with his punt return touchdown. ON TO NEXT YEAR TCU: Coach Gary Patterson has his program humming with 40 wins over the last four seasons, and the Horned Frogs expect to remain Big 12 title contenders even as Hill moves on after his final game. The Horned Frogs will have to find a new quarterback to do it, but Patterson’s teams always play some of the best defense in the league. Stanford: Love will have to decide his future and whether that will mean another year of school for the biology major and aspiring pediatrician with an interest in stem cell research, or a jump to the NFL. The trend has seen top players leave early, but Love already bucked the latest fad by choosing to play in his team’s bowl game as he ponders his decision. Coach David Shaw said this week hopes Love will return next season. If he does, pencil in the Cardinal as a Pac-12 favorite again.
SAN DIEGO – From the moment they walked off the field in San Diego, the Washington State Cougars have tried to distance themselves from the horror film that was last year’s Holiday Bowl game against Minnesota. For approximately the next 330 days, it was a mostly successful mission. But then, on college football’s selection day, the San Diego bowl announced its 2017 pairing: Washington State versus Michigan State.Yes, another Big Ten challenge will be awaiting the Cougars Thursday at 6 p.m.(FS1) as they gear up for their fourth bowl game in five years. The Spartans bring in a defense prototypical of the Big Ten Conference they play in – and one that bears more than one comparison to the Minnesota team that shielded the Cougars from the end zone until the fourth quarter and held Mike Leach’s vaunted offense to just 303 yards. The Spartans are big, strong and physical – no glaring weaknesses and no discernible soft spots the Cougars might be able to attack.“You’ve got kind of contrasting styles,” Leach said.“… I think it’s a good matchup.I think it will be fun to watch.” If the game is anything at all like Wednesday’s Holiday Bowl eve news conference, it won’t lack entertainment value for the large crowd of fans who’ve flocked to sunny San Diego.Contrasting styles were on display there, too.On one side was Leach, the eccentric WSU coach who’s always been one of college football’s best talents behind a podium. On the other was MSU’s Mark Dantonio, who’s more on the mundane side and not particularly known for bringing as much color to interactions with the media.Leach spoke first, covering a wide range of topics, from his starting quarterback’s non-throwing hand – which was covered in a cast while the Cougars were walking into practice Tuesday at Southwestern College – to his experience owning a pet raccoon, recently chronicled in an article from The Players’ Tribune.Leach stole the show again during Dantonio’s Q&A when he removed the lid from a Starbucks coffee cup and repeatedly blew into his hot beverage. He moved on to another cool-down method, reaching into a glass of ice water and plucking out a few cubes before dropping them into the Starbucks cup.The WSU coach, by the way, didn’t offer much on senior signal-caller Luke Falk, only revealing that “he has had something on his hand all year,” Leach said, “and hence we named him the King Slayer.” He added: “Beyond that, you’re on your own.” Leach’s bit on the pet raccoon, named after the Lord of the Rings’ Bilbo Baggins, also got a round of chuckles from the assembly of beat writers and television reporters gather in the ballroom of San Diego’s Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel.“They’re quite a bit more maintenance free than you would think … They do like shiny objects,” he said.“Yeah, I kinda would like to have a pet raccoon again, but, you know, bouncing around the country it makes it tough.…Then, you know, there’s the time when they, you know, they hit kinda raccoon teenage years and it’s time for them to
The sight of Alexis Sanchez coaxing his Arsenal team-mates to help him celebrate scoring against Crystal Palace was evidence enough of the division running through Arsene Wenger's side's dressing room. That was the verdict of Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness who was surprised by Arsenal's response.Sanchez put Arsenal back in front at Selhurst Park but was seen waving his arm towards colleagues gathered closer to the half-time way, an indication that he wanted his fellow team-mates to join him in his celebrations. The Chilean is out of contract in the summer and while Sanchez was embraced by a few players, a handful of other members of the team embraced in a separate huddle.“I’ve only ever seen that if a team’s 5-1 up with five minutes to go, you would get that," Souness said.
Josh Rosen's status for the Cactus Bowl against Kansas State was the primary storyline for UCLA heading into Tuesday night's game, but while the Bruins star quarterback was at midfield for the ceremonial coin toss to represent his team, he did so with sweats under his uniform as an inactive member of the roster.Rosen did not play, officially because he had not been cleared after suffering a concussion. That "100 percent medical" decision, per Sports Illustrated, did not stop him from addressing the potential of sitting out for the bowl game, like many other players with similar NFL Draft hopes have done in the past."I think players are just starting to realize they have a lot of power and they don't ned to be exploited when it's to their detriment," Rosen said."It's just every single situation is unique, and I don't think you can lump them all together." But while Rosen's status was the biggest storyline heading into the game, a less popular one ended up dominating as Kansas State cruised to a 35-17 win.Kansas State rolled up 344 rushing yards, becoming the fifth opponent to top 300 rushing yards against UCLA this season. The Bruins entered the game as one of the worst FBS rushing defenses in the country and no other Power Five program has more than three games allowing 300+ rushing yards so far in 2017.Rosen's absence hurt UCLA and certainly played a role in its struggles on third down and general offensive efficiency, but this was still a game that the Bruins led 17-7 at halftime.Quarterback Alex Delton led the way for Kansas State with 158 rushing yards and four total touchdowns (three rushing, one passing), while Alex Barnes added 117 yards and another score on the ground.A few explosive plays helped Kansas State get the lead, but it was a grinding 15-play, 98-yard drive that ate up more than eight minutes of game time that put the game away for the Wildcats. While UCLA moves on from the bowl loss with high hopes about the Chip Kelly era, less is certain regarding the future of Kansas State coach Bill Snyder, who addressed retirement rumors during media availability leading up to the game only to deny any set decisions as he focused on the next step for the Wildcats. At 78 years old, Snyder has requested more time for a "thorough" conversation with his family and the Kansas State administration before making what he has referred to as the "big decision."Snyder already retired once, in 2005, only to return in 2008 and lead Kansas State back into the spotlight with eight straight bowl appearances and three Fiesta Bowl bids.As for Rosen, the expectation is that the UCLA quarterback will take his talents to the NFL as one of the top prospects in the draft, though he, like Snyder, has yet to make an official announcement regarding his future.

The San Antonio Spurs will be without forward Kawhi Leonard and point guard Tony Parker for Wednesday's meeting with the Portland Trail Blazers, the team announced on Tuesday.Leonard and Parker are both recovering from serious quadriceps issues and will miss the game as part of the team's "injury management program", which prohibits them from playing in back-to-back games. The Spurs play the Utah Jazz on Thursday night in a nationally televised game on TNT, which likely helped inform San Antonio's decision to rest both players against Portland.Last summer, NBA commissioner Adam Silver pushed for a change in league rules that would allow for teams to be fined for resting players with an emphasis on nationally televised games.Leonard missed the Spurs' first 27 games this season before making his season debut on Dec.12.Parker missed the first 19 games of the season and has sat out on three other occasions to avoid playing on consecutive nights.Spurs' forward Kyle Anderson, who missed the past eight games with a left MCL sprain, and Danny Green, who missed the past two games with a groin injury, are both listed as probable to play against the Blazers.Wednesday's game will be the first of three meetings between the Blazers and Spurs.
