Just when the Warriors feel again how great life is without Stephen Curry, well this happens. The Warriors (33-8) ruled out Curry for Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers (18-21) at Oracle Arena after spraining his right ankle toward the end of morning shootaround.Warriors general Bob Myers sounded calm about the revelation, though.During his his weekly radio appearance on the Warriors flagship station, 95.7The Game, Myers said the Warriors currently have no plans for Curry to receive an MRI since the injury is not considered serious enough.Nonetheless, Curry’s absence coincides with other developments.Klay Thompson will rest for the first time this season, with Myers citing Thompson receiving more treatment recently because of back tightness.Warriors forward Kevin Durant will also return after missing the previous three games because of a right calf strain.“He’s frustrated,” Myers said of Curry.“Every time we think we’re getting both Kevin and Steph back, apparently we can’t get it done.”To view this podcast on your mobile device click here. The Warriors are 0-2 all-time in games without Curry and Thompson, a statistic that both captures Thompsons’ remarkable string of health and the value in the Warriors’ starting backcourt. Then, again, the Clippers will be without Blake Griffin (concussion) and Milos Teodosic (foot). For complete Warriors coverage follow us on Flipboard. As for Curry, he had averaged 35.2points while shooting 57.4percent from the field and 53.2percent from 3-point range in the past five games after missing the previous 11 because of his right ankle sprain.“Pushing him back out there when he’s got a little tenderness right now is probably unwise,” Myers said.“It’s unfortunate because he was playing great and had no issues.I can’t say it’s something we’re concerned about.I don’t know how long it goes. They’re telling me it’s day to day.”.
PORTLAND -- San Antonio Spurs star forward Kawhi Leonard has a "partial tear" in his left shoulder, according to coach Gregg Popovich.According to a league source, at this point the organization doesn't think the injury is serious following the initial diagnosis.Leonard has been ruled out of Sunday night's game at the Portland Trail Blazers, and the club plans to evaluate Leonard over the next couple days of its current road trip, which continues Monday at the Sacramento Kings and concludes Thursday at the Los Angeles Lakers. The injury occurred during San Antonio's 103-89 win Friday over the Phoenix Suns.Popovich wasn't sure whether Leonard would play at any point during the Spurs' road trip."I don't know," Popovich said."It depends on how his shoulder goes. It's too bad because he was starting to get back into form a little bit after playing a couple of games." The latest setback represents yet another roadblock for Leonard in his return, as he missed the first 27 games of the season rehabilitating from quadriceps tendinopathy. The club has held out Leonard for five games since he returned on Dec.12 as a component of what it has called "return from injury management." In perhaps his most dominant performance to date, Leonard played 29 minutes in Friday's win over the Suns, scoring 21 points to go with three rebounds and three assists.Defensively, Leonard flashed the skill set that earned him two NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards by notching four steals and three blocks, marking the first time since the 2016 playoffs that he had put up such numbers on defense.
San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard could miss more time after suffering a partial tear in his left shoulder, per Michael C.Wright of ESPN.Leonard suffered the injury Friday against the Phoenix Suns and was already set to miss Sunday's matchup with the Portland Trail Blazers, but head coach Gregg Popovich said he would miss more time."It's too bad," Popovich said, per Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News."He was starting to get back into form a little bit after playing a couple of games." The team "at this point doesn't think it's serious," and he has not yet been ruled out of the Spurs' game Thursday against the Los Angeles Lakers, per Wright.Injuries have plagued Leonard recently. He missed the Spurs' first 27 games due to quadriceps tendinopathy, which apparently had been bothering him since the 2016-17 season, per Orsborn. He has only played eight games this season, averaging 15.9points per game. The 26-year-old also missed time in the postseason last spring because of a sprained ankle, which in part led to the Spurs' demise in the Western Conference Finals. He has missed at least eight games in each of the past six seasons and averaged just 66.3games entering this year. When healthy, Leonard is one of the best all-around players in the NBA.The two-time All-Star is coming off a career year, during which he averaged 25.5points and 5.8rebounds per game to finish third in MVP voting. He has also won two Defensive Player of the Year awards. With both Leonard and veteran Rudy Gay sidelined for the time being, LaMarcus Aldridge and Pau Gasol figure to shoulder more of a scoring load for the Spurs.
The Boston Celtics defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 102-88, in Boston on Wednesday night. The return of Isaiah Thomas was the big story of the night, but Kyrie Irving -- Thomas' replacement in Beantown -- made a few headlines of his own.Sure, he only scored 11 points, but he still gave his game jersey to Aly Raisman, who sat courtside. The six-time Olympic medalist and Boston native was pretty thrilled about her new souvenir: Nothing like a victory for your favorite team and a sweaty jersey to bring home, right? South Carolina beat Michigan in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day in Tampa, 26-19. The Gamecocks came back from a 19-3 deficit late in the third quarter and won on the strength of five takeaways. Michigan’s collapse cost the Big Ten a perfect bowl record. The Gamecocks finished 9-4, and the Wolverines finished 8-5. South Carolina’s victory means free Bloomin’ Onion appetizers at Outback Steakhouses. During the third quarter, the Bloomin’ Onion Man mascot — an Outback Bowl staple, along with the Coconut Shrimp — was SB Nation’s Ryan Nanni. South Carolina’s fortunes turned in the exact quarter Nanni showed up on the sidelines. This was a running diary of the game, with highlights mixed in: South Carolina 26, Michigan 19, 0:00: The Wolverines’ Brandon Peters threw a pick to Carolina’s Steven Montac with 1:05 left to seal the game. South Carolina 26, Michigan 19, 3:47: The Gamecocks added a 22-yard Parker White field goal after a Michigan muffed punt, extending their lead to a touchdown and PAT. South Carolina 23, Michigan 19, 7:53: On a third-and-goal from Carolina’s 5-yard line, Brandon Peters threw an interception in the end zone to the Gamecocks’ JaMarcus King. Jake Bentley found Shi Smith for a 53-yard touchdown pass to put Carolina in front. The wheels are falling off for Michigan.Michigan 19, South Carolina 16, 0:51: Well, now things are interesting! The touchdown: Michigan 19, South Carolina 9, 2:25: The Gamecocks finally scored a touchdown, on a speed option pitch from Jake Bentley to Rico Dowdle. A two-point conversion try failed, keeping Michigan’s lead at two scores. After the touchdown, you might’ve noticed the Bloomin’ Onion Man mascot running around in the end zone. That’s our guy, Ryan Nanni! Michigan 19, South Carolina 3, 5:42: Quinn Nordin’s 48-yard field goal — his fourth of the day and longest so far — extended Michigan’s lead. Michigan 16, South Carolina 3, 7:49: South Carolina forced a fumble and got the ball back inside its own 5-yard line, at least temporarily averting a three-touchdown deficit. The Arizona Bowl is not typically the type of game where fans storm the field.Certainly not for a team that finished 7-6.But this has been a long, arduous wait for New Mexico State fans. All those losing seasons, all that disappointment, all that time between bowl games.Larry Rose III scored on a 21-yard run in overtime and New Mexico State won in its first bowl game in 57 years, beating Utah State 26-20 in the Arizona Bowl on Friday night.”I’m just thrilled for these kids and this community,” New Mexico State coach Doug Martin.”Just look at these fans who showed up here. This is an unbelievable day for us.Utah State (6-7) had the ball first in overtime and Dominik Eberle hit the right upright on a 29-yard field goal attempt, sending a groan through the Utah State crowd.Eberle made 16 for 18 field goals during the regular season, but missed three in the Arizona Bowl.New Mexico State won it when Jones burst through a hole on the left side, sending the Aggies and their fans rushing onto the Arizona Stadium field.Jones finished with 142 yards on 16 carries.”He’s my field goal kicker.I love that kid and he’s been really consistent all year,” Utah State coach Matt Wells said.”Was I surprised? Yes.Was I disappointed in him? Not one bit.” The third Arizona Bowl started with some early fireworks on special teams.Utah State’s Savon Scarver returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, then New Mexico State’s Jason Huntley took the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a score. The excitement leveled off considerably until LaJuan Hunt scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter, set up by a shanked punt from New Mexico State’s Payton Theisler.New Mexico State’s Tyler Rogers, held in check most of the game, answered by moving the Aggies on a 69-yard scoring drive, capped by his 11-yard touchdown pass to Jaleel Scott that tied it at 20.A video review overturned the initial call that Scott was out of bounds.Rogers, who was second nationally with 347 yards passing per game during the regular season, threw for 191 yards and touchdown with two interceptions. This was a rematch 57 years in the making.New Mexico State had not been to a bowl game since the 1960 Sun Bowl. The opponent: Utah State.Utah State went to eight bowls after that, including six of the last seven.New Mexico State went into a bowl-less tailspin, finishing with a losing record 44 times since that last bowl game.It had 14 straight losing seasons, including a 0-12 mark in 2005, before winning its final two games this season to finally get back to bowling. The long-awaited rematch turned into the Special Teams Bowl in the first half.New Mexico State’s Dylan Brown made two field goals, Eberle made two and missed two, and each team had a kickoff return for a touchdown. After a third quarter of defensive stops and punting, both teams found the end zone to send the game overtime – and, later, New Mexico State’s fans onto the field.”I thought it was a fairly clean game and pretty aggressive on b
Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke throws during the first half of the Holiday Bowl NCAA college football game against Washington State on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, in San Diego.(AP Photo/Denis Poroy) The Holiday Bowl did not go too well for Washington State. The Cougars were out to an early 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and, well, that’s about as good as it got. Michigan State reeled off 35-straight points on the way to a comfortable 42-17 win. Here’s how good it was for the Spartans.MSU’s second touchdown of the night, a 49-yard pass to wide receiver Felton Davis from quarterback Brian Lewerke, was just the second touchdown of over 40 yards the team had all season. And the Spartans’ fourth touchdown came when Lewerke rolled to his left to avoid Wazzu defenders and his pass was tipped up into the air … and into the hands of wide receiver Cody White for a 10-yard score. Washington State played without starting quarterback Luke Falk, who had been dealing with a secretive left wrist injury in the buildup to the game. Wazzu coach Mike Leach was dismissive of any questions regarding Falk’s health before the game but the senior quarterback was in street clothes on the sidelines after warmups. That meant backup quarterback Tyler Hilinski was making his first career start.Hilinski was dealing with a depleted receiving corps thanks to the dismissal of leading receiver Tavares Martin and the transfer of second-leading receiver Isaiah Johnson-Mack. Hilinski completed a high percentage of passes, but they didn’t go very far.He finished 39-50 for 272 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. And while Washington State couldn’t throw the ball downfield, the run game was nonexistent, even by Leach’s standards. The Cougars had eight carries for 24 yards.Lewerke was the star, completing 13-21 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns and also rushing for 73 yards. It was Lewerke’s second-highest rushing output of the season and just the seventh time he’s thrown for over 200 yards in a game in 2017. The win means Michigan State finishes the season 10-3 and completes an impressive turnaround from 2016. Fresh off a College Football Playoff appearance in 2015, Michigan State with 9-3 a year ago. It also means Washington State finishes the season at 9-4 and ends the season with two losses. After starting 6-0, the Cougars went 3-4 over the second half of the season.Nick Bromberg is a writer for Yahoo Sports.
