Takeaways from No. 8 Wisconsin's win against Nebraska
1. Top-10 team by default Oklahoma’s loss to Iowa State means Wisconsin may move up a spot in this week’s Amway Coaches Poll. But while undefeated, the Badgers don’t look the part of a top-10 team. At times, the Badgers’ defense had no answer to Nebraska’s offense, whether on the ground or in the downfield passing game. Offensively, Wisconsin ran the ball effectively but failed to put together extended drives until the fourth quarter, when Nebraska’s defense wilted. (Though the Badgers get credit for wearing the Cornhuskers down.) Wisconsin looks like a top-10 team by virtue of its record and little more — for now. There will be opportunities in October and November to justify its ranking, most notably a game against Michigan on Nov. 18. But does it really matter? In the era of the College Football Playoff, all the Badgers have to do is keep winning.2. Where Wisconsin needs to improve Nebraska didn’t reveal any flaws on Wisconsin’s part — this program rarely has any big-picture issues — but the Cornhuskers did exploit some lingering concerns as the Badgers head into the meat of Big Ten Conference play. What was most surprising was the effectiveness of Nebraska’s running game, and in particular the push it was able to get on the offensive line. The same blueprint will be used by every conference foe the rest of the way. Nebraska also got pressure on Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook, pressuring the sophomore and forcing one pick-six.
